"It just about sums up the state of this shabby nation and the pickle we are in." Feel free to fuck off somewhere else if you think it's that shit. As a patriotic Brit I accept the bad times as well as the good ones and Santa will be selling condoms in Hell before I ever follow the fucking French into any battle anywhere with anyone.

"Not bad is it. We get the announcement that the retirement age is going up to 66 and barely a murmur. The French are fighting tooth and nail against a proposal to increase their retirement age to 62. It just about sums up the state of this shabby nation and the pickle we are in." It's not that simple if France you could retire at 60, but you didn't get a state pension until you where 65. So the want to add 2 years to both schemes, so you can retire at 62 but you will have to wait til your 67 to get the state pension!

"its diabolical they are even considering making cuts especially in the emergency services. this will lead to stressed out staff, who will then go off sick and on sick pay. I cannot see that they are going to achieve anything. (just my opinion)" And so say the: firemen policemen soldiers civil servants butchers bakers & candlestick makers ... so what do we cut and where? We know some things have to go and the govt can't make people in the private sector redundant as they are not their employers. What cuts? Where?

" Calm your language down pal. It might help your argument hold a little weight. Not much mind. Why is it the standard retort of people with no answers "if you don't like it leave"? Why not think on a bit and make this country a better place. Clue for you- it doesn't cutting everyhting under the guise of "strategic re_iews".

"Its already started. this from dave prentiss of unison. *********************************** This is a critical week for UNISON with the comprehensive spending re_iew widely expected to deliver a hammer blow to our public services. At the same time, unions, community groups and supporters will be taking part in demonstrations and rallies across the country to voice their opposition. It is vital that members support local, regional and national events to challenge the government’s no-hope, ideologically driven, agenda of cuts and more cuts. Public spending cuts will also hit the private sector, with a predicted half a million people losing their jobs. We are all in it together and we must work together to make sure that the union's alternative vision is seen. **************************************" well I am a teacher and to me they have been only noticeable by their absence since the erosion of our service began some 4 years back. Bit late for rallying the peeps now.

The British often call the French but I wish we had their attitude. Whenever they get dealt a bum hand, they're all up in arms and stand up for their beliefs, good on 'em! The best part about it is their shows of solidarity usually make a difference too. They've never lost that revolutionary state of mind, unlike the Brits,we've been under the cosh so long we just tug our forelocks and mutter into our pints while we get trodden on......again. If only we had the backbone and spirit of the French we might get dumped on less too......"People Power" and all that! XXXX

"Martin Niemoller said "When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. None whatsoever!!!!!! When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn't a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out. " there are parralles."
