Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Is this forum, and other similar fora, the natural evolution of speakers' corners?

Extending that to open space where whoever turns up are the right people, whatever contribution made is what it is, when it's over it's over and if no one turns up you've still had your say do people feel more aggrieved here at hecklers than they would at a speakers' corner?

There's a code of conduct for Speakers' Corners but no mods to ensure the code is followed.

Do you think people still throw fruit?

The only clean up here is the sweeping up of bruised egos and the bad taste left in the mouth at some threads. Oh, and the splattered screens from all the tea/coffee/wine/other liquid beverages spat out at posts.

I would say the contrary to be the case, that forum contributors aspire to speakers corner. But live public debate is on a different plain. The level of spontaneity, that evangelical verve cannot be replicated in the realms of cyberspace. The forum debate is calculated, bolstered by unfathomable resources of the Internet, instantly accessed and regurgitated No doubt informative, I grant, but they often lack pure, spontaneous creative spark.

Go on.

Admit it.

You've been typing that for half an hour.

The odd witty riposte can be seen.

I suppose the main difference is that here you don't get that immediacy of communication or engagement, that sense of holding an audience for another minute even though everyone is in the rain.

I reply here can be thought of over time, where as face to face, the quick retort has far more intensity. Also you get to see their reaction to you response.

It's easier to hide behind a mask online, so people can be very different than in person.

Fortunately for you lot I really am an awesome, time-travelling galactic hero who is full of charm, wit and modesty so at least you can count on me on that score

Now where did I put that sonic-inducer? I have glitter to remove...

Hecklers are par for the course if your have an opinion and dare too speak it, thankfully on line it is easier to ignore, bullies are bullies anywhere and people who are afraid of a differing opinion are still just as ignorant but at least there is no rotten fruit as mentioned before or you don't end up in stocks or being burnt at the stake.

Plus, you don't get cold and wet on here or end up with a hoarse throat.

If you think of the whole idea of speakers corner being the main trunk of the tree, then I would say that a forum is a new branch springing from the older life force
