We had a message from a couple the weekend.

Think we have read it about twenty times and still no clue as to what they are trying to say.

Even when taking predicted text into account and the possibility they may be of foreign origin.

Totally unfathomable.

I don't like poor spelling and grammar but can easily forgive if the person is dyslexic.

However if they genuinely think "howz u lol" is a good opening gambit then they will be ignored.

I was brought up on 19th century classic literature, so it will always be 'spelt' for me. The other is the American Standard spelling, and was the lesser used English.

(Unless you are talking time periods, in which case 'spelled' is correct)

But language is fluid, and I certainly wouldn't kick anyone out of bed for it...

Interesting, spelt betrays the Anglo-Saxon origin - I am getting tired of words losing their past-participles like shaved replacing shaven.

I do get tired of grossly misspelt messahes but will overlook a genuine typo but there are some that really annoy me like 'site for sore eyes' etc.

It is good when people have decent grammar but it isn't a deal breaker - I have a good friend who is a school teacher - has excellent grammar and punctuation, but his text messages are all 'c u ltr fr drinx' or whatever...He defends it by saying it is merely a quick message and as long as I know he will 'see me later for drinks' then that's al that matters. I can see why introductory messages on here could be seen as different though.

I do like a well turned out sentence though...

People can help the way they spell, apart from those with dyslexia. In my experience, most dyslexics try harder and usually spell and punctuate better than those who are just plain lazy.

You get a good sense of a person from the language they use. Obviously we all make typos, but slovenly writing is often an indicator of a slovenly mindset.

In one sense you are not wrong, but neither are you completely right. I hate to say it but the form of the profile tells a lot about the profilee and helps us winnow down to profiles of couples we are likely to get on with. I do take your point that there are those with degrees of communication difficulties where expressing what they want to convey can be difficult. But I do know from personal experience that when it matters getting something right can be achieved. And, it is not unusual to be able to detect these profiles and make appropriate allowances.

There are two major classes of error that get readers dander up; typos and homonym substitutions. Typos are easy to make and hard to spot and frankly can be ignored: however, should you describe yourself as a professional then I do expect the word professional to be correctly spelled; I then expect the most egregiously misused homonyms to be mainly correct: site/sight, there/their/they're etc. a lot of such words carry baggage so when I come upon site I think bulldozers and JCBs not beautiful women. Textspeak just says lazy beggar to me. BUT I know that there are as many where these issues just resonate with other profile readers who see the profile writers as their peeps!

In the end the profile is saying 'call us, we are interesting' and if the writer hasn't put that over, nobody will call.
