I have been on 4 metformin tabs daily for about two months now, for pre-diabetes. I exercise with a strictly monitored circuit program three times a week.

I am struggling to lose weight tho - my consultant reassured me she has seen many lose 'oodles of weight'

have you any diet advice...or best times to take the meds and what with etc etc

Thanks

I struggle to lose weight on it too bit then I also eat a fair bit lol

Are you losing inches etc?

The only noticeable effect other than my blood sugars I found was gastrointestinal but I found switching to the slow release version and restricting cards helped with that greatly.

...Up on the Downs

You may have to follow a low carb regime to get your insulin down - I would recommend you research the subject if you have not already.

I had really bad diarrhoea off those tablets when i first started taking them and did lose a couple of stone. Was in agony wth stomach cramps and everything.

Not lost any weight since those symptoms went. Well lost half a stone in 3 months by healthy eating, due another check soon so might have lost more, usually i haven't though.

Hi Evie

yes, i lost 7 inches overall last time i got measured at the gym, the next assessment in a month or so will be a test to see if the tabs have helped with that, but i get weighed each week.

Yes, i had gastro probs too! Well still do, I think when i eat after 8 at night, and/or have a takeaway etc. Body telling me to ditch those weekly treats i think lol

as for diet yes i know to cut down / out carbs, just not in the right frame of mind of thinking what to replace, the pasta and spuds with......

You need patience, treating and managing diabetes is a lifetime thing, don't think about it in days or week's.

Months and years is your target.

Look at the total carbohydrates in food not just the sugars.

Ditch bread

All fizzy drinks, Inc diet

Do not buy diabetic food it's a rip off.

Buy books, educate yourself.

It's not about volume and intensity regarding exercise.

It's regularity and consistency.

Regular exercise done correctly combined with correct diet will yield results you have to want it and be strong and patience.

Good luck

I am on Metformin Slow Release tablets, 4 per day. I too found Gastric problems but then a pharmacist recommended taking one Lansaprazole tablet on waking each day; my GP agreed and problem solved !

There are lots of groups on Facebook about low carbon. It is hard. I found it hard because I don't want to faff about when cooking and a lot of the replacements are things like cauli rice and cauliflower pizza Base etc. Also a lot of the baking requires random ingredients like coconut flour and psyllium husks

I will tend to just not have potatoes or pasta etc and just have lots of veg. I really need to get back on it!!

There is no longer a specific diabetes diet. The recommendations for people with diabetes are the same as for everyone else - 5+ a day, low sugar, low fat and adequate protein.

Taking metformin with food can help some people alleviate the gut problems which are a frequent side effect of the drugs.

High Intesity Interval Training works well for me, combine it with wieghts too. Also eat little but often to get you metabolism going. If you go to a gym see if they can figure out something that'll suit you.

I've lost 2.5 stone this year so far after putting on weight after an accident, couple more to go.

I have just read the book

"Why we get fat, and what to do about it" by Gary Taubes..... ( a physicist and science writer)

Totally inspirational and hard to argue against his logic (I'm from a science background)...an international best seller it seems

I'm just embarking on a 4 week test to see the effects on myself....

Anyway in summary.... Carbs are the culprit it is almost certain....known about for century's but we lost our way in the 60s with the current fat makes you fat nonsense (according to Taubes who I am inclined to believe)

Read said book and see if you can disagree with it's conclusions....I can't but we shall see.

Good luck

I've lost 5 stone while on metformin. I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night. Found it worked better for my stomach than after each meal, not such bad cramps or diarrhoea

Central

Dietary and exercise changes are most suited to weight loss and metformin may help you, as well as to sustain that loss - plus the other benefits it delivers.

Exercise alone can be a poor method for weight loss for many people.

Reduce the amount you eat.

Increase the protein decrease the carbs

Change from sugars and starches to low gi complex carbs.

keep in mind that if you don't get a handle on your condition you could lose significant weight overnight when they have to amputate one or more of your limbs.

or you could go blind.

that should help motivate you..

The fat makes you fat thing became an issue because people still want to eat a large amount of food.

So they needed to start removing the very calorie dense fat so they could still offer large meals without having incredibly high calorie values.
