The good news is the government has stated that it intends to get Half a Million people off of benefits and back to work by 2014.....

The bad news is the government lets slip a cabinet document that says it intends to get rid of 490,000 public sector jobs by 2014.....

So if the unemployment figures are, for example, 2,000,000 and the government makes 490,000 redundant which increases the unemployment total to 2,490,000 and then the government gets 500,000 off the dole then the unemployment figure reduces to 1,950,000.

A decrease in unemployment is good isn't it?

It would be until you look at the CBI's report yesterday that predicted a further 350,000 private sector jobs to go by summer 2011.

You can only re employ these 490,000 public sector workers if the private sector is relatively buoyant....and it isn't.

No matter how you look at it, it's not good, and we still have the full spending review tomorrow. How can we scarp the harrier fleet, build two new carriers nad have no plnaes to fly off them for 10 years !!! Surely they will then say we have managed without and scrap the carriers.

my suspicion is that although there will be numerous cuts within the public sector, there will be in a increase in contracts being issued to service providers.

the benefit for the humble civil servant being that they will be bumped out the civil service on a friday with a nice little redundancy package then be employed on the monday by whichever contractor has been sucessful in biding for said post and they will have less benefit (ie pension, leave, sick benefit) but will be doing the same job, for less....with a bulging back pocket courtesy of the government

Any body else hear echos of joly joly sixpence and on your bike.

Funny looking back how labour will appear better and better as time goes by.

And just where are the lib dems in all this. Only thing they seem to have done so far is drop their trousers and bend over the desk, no change there then.

But if they have a nice redundancy package they wont be able to sign on the dole till they spent everything but the last 16000. Figures might just look good for a while.

Blimey wishy, I am beginning to think nothing will make you say what a crock of shit some things are. All they are doing is giving jobs to some people and taking away others, it all ends up around the same amount.

I wonder what jobs all those people thrown on the scrap heap will all end up with

Or where these 500,000 new jobs are coming from?

The clever money is on it all being a play on words, the 500,000 actual equating to the people who are going to be moved from Incapacity to Jobseekers....not to be knocked as that will save around £700 million a year....less the cost of the medicals and tribunals, not forgetting the appeals.....which the CBI reckon will cost about £500 million in the first year.

Still £200 million a year saving on the benefit bill isn't to be sniffed at, until you work out that the cost of placing the 490,000 Public Service workers on benefits probably equates to more than it costs to employ them in the first place....

Anyone for a winter of discontent?
