OK sex makes babies. How come we still have a sex drive when we are way past bringing kids up?

Why do we remain curious about body parts even when we know what one looks like?

Anyone got any answers, serious or funny?

Considering the thousands of years our species has been around we're not designed to live to the ages we do.

Basically our sex drive doesnt shut down because there's nothing in our coding to do that as we never used to live to the ages that we do.

I think.

I think as human beings we are smart enough to enjoy sex for pleasure, whereas most animals see it as a means of creating offspring and nothing else.

Although I've never even considered the question this seems highly plausible.

Modern medicine keeps us alive a lot longer than previous generations, before it our life expectancy was pretty low and with a nine month pregnancy with few offspring and lots that can go wrong our sex drive allowed us to reproduce with multiple partners to raise the chances of a successful birth.

i think mostly women lose some sexual drive way more than men do - as man can fertilise an egg but woman has to carry and nurture an embryo and older bodies unable to do this (generally - always exceptions)

It's just genes doing what genetics do!

I'm sure there's a few women who lose sex drive with the menopause and lots of men too.

It always makes me laugh how we as a society drive morals onto teenage girls not to have sex even though every gene they've got is saying mate, mate, mate!

Genes certainly wouldn't choose 30 like society does, technically we're well over the hill by then lol

Sex relieved the boredom of cold, dark nights when there weren't any candles, gaslight or electricity. It's a good way to keep warm and passes a bit of time. Animals have the ability to eat and sleep all day and night, they don't get bored. That's my theory anyway. Also, closeness to others helps build up immunities to diseases.

Dolphins have sex for pleasure, and apparently a pig's orgasm lasts for 30 minutes.

We are animals!

This disconnection from nature where we see human beings as outsiders looking in has been going on far too long!

There's theories that sex is also for bonding and not just to make kids. Which is probably why people go off sex and hold back on sex with a partner when they aren't happy with them.

I think mainly sex drive is down to the brain, stimulation, etc and that doesn't switch off automatically, things affect it.

And hormones. I'm learning a lot about Serotonin at the moment as I'm having trouble with mine. Just learned that the parawhatsit thingy in the vagina produces Serotonin. I have a theory at the moment that this hormone,as well as controlling hunger and emotions can cause a libido surge. I'm looking into it as my desire for sex has increased a thousand fold.

Its not just dolphins. Penguins, porcupines, walruses, horses and squirrels masturbate, too. It is not an uncommon thing in the animal world so it could be called a natural urge.

We are one of the few species that has sex for recreational pleasure... Hence we carry on past that stage.. as sex isn't just designed for procreation in our species .. it helps create bonds too x

You can become addicted to hormones, and the better a hormone fits a receptor the more of a 'high' you get, and the more addicted (or not). Not looked into it too much myself personally. Hope you find some interesting ideas.

The opposing thumb gave us great wisdom and morals.

It seems you can't have your cake and eat it!

Nature never fails to utterly amaze, bewilder, intrigue and appall me.

There's a butterfly that migrates from Africa to the UK, every third or fourth generation gets an extra big set of wings so it can fly all the way back to Morocco in one go. How the fuck does it know to go to Morocco!

I've been saying this for years, and people think I'm insane for having wanted kids for the past 6-7 years! I'm already getting on a bit, my time is running out!

We're also opportunistic as a species. If the chance is there we generally take it - again it's something hard wired to procreate though we do for pleasure too obvs.

Its been a very enlightening thread, thanks fir the thoughts and for the thinking.

I had wondered if anyone would pop up with the "originals sin" thing and commend celebacy as being good for the soul.

For men, now I'm no expert, but I think that having sex is also a factor in reducing the likelihood of prostrate problems -or is this just another way of saying that I like red wine therefore its good for me type stories?
