At what age, would you leave your children overnight on their own?

There's no official age, the offence is when leaving them alone puts them at risk.

So it depends on the child - some people I know aren't safe on their own as adults!

While you nip to a neighbours or nearby shop? Probably 8 or so.

For an hour or two? Around 12.

For an evening or overnight? 14?

But you know your own child.

All I know is that I wouldn't do it now...they are 7 and 11....i couldn't say when I think they would be mature enough though.

Depends greatly on the kid. I'd say 14 or 15 if they're mature and able to cope in an emergency.

Depends on the kid. Our oldest would be fine. We don't do it, but he'd be okay. He's 12.

Our middle child will probably be 20 by the time that happens because I can't even trust him to go around the block on his own (at age 8) without getting hit by a car because he pays attention to NOTHING.

Our youngest (5) is a wild child. If he doesn't mellow by the time he's a teenager, we couldn't leave him without risk of him impregnating someone or having an orgy at the house. I love that he is a free-spirit, but he is WIDE OPEN all the time.

For me it would also depend on where I was going...how far away I'd be if needed or if there was someone who could get there in an emergency

Depends how responsible they are really.

Mine set the toaster on fire last month and didn't know what to do so no way would i be leaving them on their own yet, my oldest i would have from about 15 i reckon, but as i have younger kids he never got the chance coz it would have meant leaving them with him as well.

If i want a rare night off i pay my ex to have the kid that isn't his, so he can treat all the kids to a pizza and that and they have a good night without me.

Leave him an hour or two on his own, with a way to contact you, and see how he goes?

I worry they'll invite their mates round or burn the house down with hem in it.

I've left him alone during school holidays or if I've gone out in the evening for a few hours.

It's the overnight thing that I've not done yet. I'd be happier with him having a couple of friends to stay too to be honest.

Eldest son still can't trust him to not burn the house down , have a party etc etc and he is 25

You got anyone who lives nearby and would go and check on them?

I know what you mean about not knowing when and how worrying it can be. I haven't left mine on their own yet because of this, think i shelter my kids too much sometimes but i'd hate something to happen to them.

My parents live in Henley so not far away but I'm not sure I could tell them I was going away for a night.

They think I'll rot in hell because I let my son have a beer occasionally

Depends if you feel they're responsible. Our eldest will be on his own this sat as D away and I'm working. He's pretty level headed and we have complete trust in him. We've inlaws a few streets away too which is reassuring.

14 and 17 they were asleep when we got a call to go to the hospital because bro in law was about to pass away. It was better they slept really.

We did go to America for a week and left my daughter 20 in charge of the wayward boy 17 . My mum lived 2 miles away. I would never have left my son alone in this house.. he would have to go stay with Gramma He was a devil !

Just where I need to be.

I had to leave my sixteen year old son looking after my 14 yr old daughter when they were younger. Their dad refused to look after them overnight while I was working once eldest was 16. I had great neighbours, family living 10 minutes away. Always during the week,and both were mature and aware that any misbehaving would have an impact on my being able to work. Was not an ideal situation but it worked for us.

Actually you are allowed to leave a child under 16 alone at night but it's against the recommendations of the NSPCC.

It is an offence to leave a child alone if it places them risk & you can be prosecuted if they suffer or have an injury.

You are the parent in charge no matter where you are.

Common sense prevails & as others have said its down to the individual child & circumstances.

Aw, my parents are the same, except i'm a slag as well.

I don't think i have any more advice really, hope you figure something out.

Never left my kids alone at night and they are 17, 16 and 13. We do have some late nights/early mornings but always keep my phone with me. Have not got d*unk since my oldest was born either, as a single parent who had all the responsibility, I was always terrified that if anything happened when I was, who would sort it ...

When my parents were away (which was a lot) I used to be left at home at about 13.

My best mate used to stay over.

It was great. We had security though.
