Why is our planet still molten inside? The age of our Earth is 4.54 billion years. Surely a massive lump of rock like this would have cooled by now? Unlike the Sun, our planet is not self perpetuating, using nuclear fusion to keep going.

Just thought I'd throw that out there!

It is thought that 90% of the heat in the Earth's core is generated by nuclear fission. There are insufficient quantities of light elements, and insufficient gravitational pressure to initiate fusion.

It's because the planet is a room in the TARDIS... The molten core is part of what's powering the TARDIS. End of.
