I just dont get it - why spend all that time and money to have a fight and bring your teams reputation down???

Just go and enjoy the game then go have a drink - simples!!!

(am watching a programme on BBC1 in case you were thinking this was really random!!)

It's a very very complex area - The gf of a mate was doing a PhD that involved getting into the physce of the 'hooligans' and she visited footie matches and 'interviewed' the people.

She told me that in the main the people had good jobs and were of above average intelligence but got involved for the buzz/kick and being part of a social group - sound familair?

we live in stoke on trent and stoke city fans are the worst in the country,8 of these so called football fans have just been arrested for attacking a man utd fan and putting him in hospital,the poor bloke was not even going to a match!these brave men all 8 should be banned from football for life.

Football hooligans and the like fascinate me. I don't agree with what they do. I abhor violence.

But the whole group mentality and behaviour and reasoning etc fascinates me.

They just use football as a common gathering area and probably have no real interest in it at all.

Chances are,if football was banned tomorrow,they'd just move on to another high volume spectator sport.

They should tie some to the goalposts and flog them for halftime entertainment.

Bet there'd be no victims after the 3rd or 4th week though.

originally they met away from the grounds for a big fight then it moved closer in and involved others, similar to other fighting groups, mods and rockers etc

they tried it at hull a load of hull football fans for want of a better way of describing them turned up at a rugby league game which is full of families and there were about 60 of them tried kicking off but they come unstuck as a lot of rugby fans are amateur players themselves so rugby fans from both leeds and hull gave these idiots just what they asked for i,m not saying i condone this but they have not been back for a second helping

my point of view its about defending your territory and not letting rival groups..ie stoke city naughty forties..leeds united service crew..sunderland..seaburn casuals and various others take the piss in your city.

all males are bred or have it in them to defend or fight what they feel is an attack on thier clan.

i was a big part of it in the late 70s and 80s but grew up and left it behind.

a lot of young up and coming hooligans have nothing these days and are a far cry from the way films like green st portray them

That's about it, very little to do with sport apart from providing a flag to stand behind. Testosterone, bravado, fighting spirit and a hunger to let of stream. Rather unpleasant to witness i have to say.

is it the 'best way' to let kids see how grown men (and women!) should act?? is it the 'best way' for kids to see how adults treat authority figure such as the police??

Its an interesting question as both can leave you in a serious state. Saying that mines are a despicable and indiscriminate weapon and shouldn't be produced in the first place.

agree with you on that point but does that make it ok for them to witness the type of mindless violence these 'firms' perpetuate??

podgy brain?...oh well there was no one podgy in green st ..all film stars etc, so there is some real fascination in football violence still im glad i found beer and discovered im a lover not a fighter.

it was bad in the early 80s which coincided with my son being born and leaving that lifestyle well alone

I wouldn't say I was "in it" as such... I was on the outskirts of it though... just though people I just happened to know the "top boys" at arsenal, use to stand next to them all on the terraces and drink in the same pubs so was kinda taken in with them without having to do all the "hard stuff"

also by some quirk, use to also know some boys at west ham as, I was always the "street smart" practical kid... so if there were any issues they always came to me for some reasons......
