"I know someone (who is loaded btw) who has a Tesla. They have a range of about 200 miles and there is a free Tesla motorway fast charge point where he stops for an hour to re-fuel. Cool features - location can be seen from the app (and he can even operate the car remotely - horn etc not drive it). As someone who has never been remotely interested in driving the new Telsa car is actually swaying my decision & at $35,000 I'm very tempted to learn how to drive & save up for one Not cheap!"

"Isnt there a catch with the batteries on these? You dont own the batteries due to there cost or something im sure i read somewhere " . You lease the batteries, they replace them when needed, still works out alot cheaper than petrol or diesel

" I must say that if ALL cars were electric, the amount of noise would drop considerably! This thought makes me sad ![]() ![]() Very true. Bit like of a neighbour has the music on full in the summer. Nice of it's your type of music. Terrible if it's not!

"My eldest daughter and her husband have Zoe's They have them on lease. They work great for them and seem to do very well. I must say that if ALL cars were electric, the amount of noise would drop considerably! " Most of the noise you hear is from the tyres not the engine, unless it's some supercar of course.

"Anyone got one, test drive one? Good points? Bad points? Please and thankyou ![]() Question: What do you mean by electric car? If you mean battery powered electric car don't bother (maybe they will improve)... If you mean a car that uses electrical motors powered by a petrol or diesel generator then the power delivery to the wheels is more efficient, but as far as I know there are none in production so far. Of course you could mean a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle and then you need about £250000 to run a car on water and have free motoring... I believe Honda will build you one if you have the spare cash. ![]()

"Anyone got one, test drive one? Good points? Bad points? Please and thankyou ![]() ![]() . Most hybrid cars use electric motors to power the wheels, it's not new diesel trains so exactly the same thing! Hydrogen cars, yeah great... How do you get the hydrogen again. It takes more energy to split the hydrogen of water than you get off the hydrogen! If you think electric cars are a bit away from doable then hydrogen fuel cells are even further away. Last time I looked Edinburgh university was working on a material that you could build the body shell from and was also the battery! , that's likely the next generation of electric cars

" I must say that if ALL cars were electric, the amount of noise would drop considerably! This thought makes me sad ![]() ![]() . Your correct except it's not just electric cars, it's actually more environmentally friendly to keep any car than swap for any new car, however if you insist on swapping cars it's better to swap to an electric car. See my post above about hydrogen ![]()

" I must say that if ALL cars were electric, the amount of noise would drop considerably! This thought makes me sad ![]() ![]() ![]() . Hondas answer to diesel cars and one I think works much better. Happy little run around with good fuel economy, turns nuts when you want/need it too

" I must say that if ALL cars were electric, the amount of noise would drop considerably! This thought makes me sad ![]() ![]() ![]() I know the trouble they're having with hydrogen fuel cells. Once they've cracked it it will definitely be the better alternative. One thing I've not looked at is what happens to the spent batteries. How are they recycled? Are they recycled?

" I must say that if ALL cars were electric, the amount of noise would drop considerably! This thought makes me sad ![]() ![]() ![]() . You can't crack it, it's the third law of thermo dynamics, you can't get more energy out than you put in! Don't get me wrong electric cars can't replace petrol cars, but they have an ability for in fill, just like wind turbines on the grid

Put your foot to the floor and watch the mpg drop! Energy in energy out with efficiency ratios being equal. Depends what you want out of an engine, I always thought Honda's vtec was a pretty good attempt at both while remaining extremely reliable

"Yeah he's failing to point out the engines on both cars probably cost him around 2-5k more the fuel is 10% more expensive, the cam belt change on many diesels would buy 6 tanks of fuel, the dpf filters, oil on some modern diesels £150 a tub... Don't get me wrong diesels have their place if your doing 30k+ a year millage but last time I looked the average mileage was below 10k at that point your paying for the privilege" As I work for an oil company, am a mechanic with access to the necessary facility's.recently serviced both cars for a total cost of around £63 and bought both cars as ex motorbility vehicles at three years old for around two thirds of new price, one at 12k miles and the other at 15k. Will keep both for around three years and move on before timing belts need doing. So you can see if your a bit savvy you can run a diesel very very cheaply. Apart from anything els diesels are soo much nicer to drive, very wide power band means very little gear changing and a very smooth power delivery.and modern diesels are not slow either, many are 150 bhp plus. ![]() ![]() ![]()
