For Catholic priests to give advice on things like marriage when they have never been married themselves?

"For Catholic priests to give advice on things like marriage when they have never been married themselves?"

If you ask them they're hardly going to turn you away. Most of the preists i've known are daft though.

I meant are they qualified to give advice on something they've never experienced.

They've been doing it for centuries. Inappropriate for them possibly but it is part of their traditions.

Same could be said about my male doctor giving me advice about periods...what does he know?!!

"For Catholic priests to give advice on things like marriage when they have never been married themselves?"

They can't give impartial advice due to Catholic doctrine.

Its sinful to have sex before marriage or get a divorce.

It's not a thread about religion. It's more a thread about giving advice on something they have no personal knowledge about.

It isn't wrong, and of course no-one (not even a Catholic) is obligated to take the advice given. Does a Relate counsellor need to be gay to offer advice to a gay couple? Does a Marie Curie nurse have to have had cancer themselves to be able to do their job?

"It's not a thread about religion. It's more a thread about giving advice on something they have no personal knowledge about."

If that were wrong then a lot of people in a lot of professions are wrong. I don't believe you have to have personal experience of something to empathise and advise.

Most senior OB/GYN consultants are male so obviously have no personal experience.

i would hazard a guess that a lot of counsellors do not have personal experience with the field they specialise in.

Because they are basing their advice on their religious beliefs, teachings of God etc etc....well that's how I see it anyway.

Whether you believe in it or act on it is upto the individual.

The person who taught me to swim and dive couldn't swim. She understood what worked and why and could explain when and why something looked wrong and could give advice on how to fix it.

Religious people will give advice based on their religious precepts.

If that's what you're after then ok. If not it won't be the best advice for you.

It has religious themes so likely will become a religious thread, they always do.

"Based purely on my limited time in these forums, I think the world is full of people giving advice on subjects that they clearly know nothing about!"

That was precisely my point. Single people give advice on marriages, people with no children give advice to parents. Priests give advice on matters they have no personal experience of.

Is it right that they should do so. I don't think I'd take much notice of someone who hadn't had first hand experience of what they were talking about.

Doctors/ nurses

Solicitor

I'm sure many professions do this
