Good quality tin food, like pies, mince with onion etc...?

I would raid the likes of Lidl's and Aldi's for those.

Microwave rice in a bag is handy.

So is packets of filled pasta, just need to add a sauce, and the sauce can be from a tin or a bag.

Good chunky soups in a tin is also handy, just need some bread and it will make a good meal.

I love pies in tins, like those with puff pastry.

If there is sufficient space in the freezer, then frozen pizzas etc. are great.

Frozen sausages can be used to make a toad in a hole, just add gravy and some veg and it will be a good meal.

That's all I can think of so far. Hope it helps.

Eggs are good, very handy in the house.

Scrambled, pan-fried, or make an omelette with chopped ham/cornbeef and grated cheese.

So what if he cannot fold the omelette to make it look good? Just pile it up on a plate and eat I'd say!

I love frying up some cornbeef and mix it with eggs, yum yum!

birds eye potato waffles (frozen), twice down in the toaster, done!

But seriously jo he needs to start learning the basics of cooking. getting tinned food/microwave meals is all well and good, but the day you cook your first fryup is a legendary day!

Hi Jo hunny xx

I shouldn't worry too much, he won't starve. We found an account (paid by us!) at the local takaways was a godsend! Nice varied diet of Pizza, Kebabs, more Pizza... Pizza seems to be the favourite and there was always some left when we went to visit!

The Pizza place, Indian and Chinese restaurants were very happy to take orders and call us for the credit card details, but we did limit it to three times a week and a max of three people. That way we knew they weren't hungry and they still had four days to get to grips with opening tins lol

They never took the piss once... More like every week! lol

I work right next to uni accommodation complex and judging by the shop in there students survive solely on Pot Noodles.

They have a whole wall of Pot Noodle, with every flavour you can imagine. The vagina and custard one is my personal fave as I've stated before.

I was worried about my son when he went away to uni last year as i had done everything for him and he didnt have a clue about cooking,i sent him with the usual tons of pasta, jars of pasta bake pot noodles lots of different tins of food, when he came back last xmas he said he would cook for us and cooked an amazing meal, i was shocked when he went away he couldnt even open a tin of beans.. So he wont starve and it helps them to do things for themselves x

Jo- get him an account at the local pizza place. Students swear by them!

Seriously I think Granny's list was great. You want tinned everything as fresh food either gets wasted or stolen.

Get beans/pasta/tomatoes that kind of thing. Vitamin pills are a definte plus aswell!

That's a shame, as one seldom finds a starving/hungry Chinese!

Just hope they are sociable enough to invite your son and the other non-Chinese housemate to join in their meals or perhaps social activities too!

Southend

I remember going to a meeting when my daughter was in the her last year at college and there was a meeting for parents and students about what to expect at University.

The lecture hall was packed with parents and students...the guy at the front was talking about things to expect when they get to university.

He asked the students to raise there hand if they had ever done there own laundry...my daughter raised her hand along with lots of others. he then asked for those hands to stay raised and ask, out of you lot which ones can also cook a meal from scratch using basic ingredients...not a throw in the microwave job... lots put there hands down.

He the ask the few remaining have there parents ever allowed them to go to a weekly shop and stick to a budget. I was very proud to say that the only hand left up was my daughters. The lecturer then told all the other students to turn around and look at her and find out what uni she was going to, cause she would be the only one to survive lol

My father always taught me that if you could clean your clothes and live within a budget and buy basic food you will always be able to feed and clean yourself and not get into to much debt. I made sure I did passed this on to my kids.

So to answer the OP question...spend some of the money on cookery lessons so that he will be able to fend for himself because that is one of the things university is about.
