This really happened

I woke up Tuesday morning to find a whatsapp message from someone saying:

"hey how's it going?"

The number is unknown to me and because my contacts were recently lost I proceed to reply with:

"hi, who's this? I'm sorry I lost all my contacts"

He then proceeded to send me a picture of himself. There's me thinking, I really don't know who he is, maybe I forgot and he sent me a picture to remind me.

"I'm so sorry I don't recall who you are, have we talked before? What's your name? "

I'm thinking when he says his name I'll remember.

"Lol it's Ali. Where are you from? I hope you don't mind, but I got your number from Fab"

At this point I'm confused and frustrated. I'm thinking someone must have given it to him, so I try to find out

"Fab? Who's been so cheeky to give it to you? Lol"

I want answers

"It's really funny actually, I found a way to trace pictures to mobile phones that uploaded them lol. I'll tell you about it another time. So where are you from?"

I am mad now. How dare he take away my right to privacy and right to give my number to who I want, and he wants to talk to me like it's nothing.

I keep my cool and ask him his username, I want to report this bastard.

He tells me he was on fab, but his account always gets deleted (I wonder why)

I reply with:

"You know what Ali, what you have done is a violation of my privacy and right to give my number to whom I wish to give it to. I don't know who you are and what right you think you have to talk to me. Maybe your profile got deleted a lot because of this very reason. Do not contact me any further, if you do I will report you to the appropriate authorities".

I waited for him to read the message then I blocked him.

Can you believe the audacity of this individual? He's the type of person to avoid in any situation.

Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? It was a terrible experience for me, because I know we all risk safety when we meet someone, but when you're private number is accessible to someone you don't want the attention of it's completely infuriating.

I'm not sure that he can do that but I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. Could it be somebody you do know messing with your head?

This is the first I've heard of being able to trace phone numbers from photos. Do you use the in built camera app on your phone to take pics, or a third party app? It's possible if you've used a third party app it might include more data than you would expect.

Definitely creepy though!

Some phones etc store lots of details in images (exit data) but fab strips this out so its unlikely that way, most likely he's got it some other way and lied.

People need to get a grip and take control of their live and own destiny.

I get asked nonstop for my KIK or Whatsapp on here - not a chance till I'm ready end off.

Take the control back and don't feel you need to pander to the masses your in charge.

And OP you did the right thing blocking the twat and hope that's the end off it. x

I saw his picture and I didn't recognise him. He's not my type at all. If it is someone I do know that's a sure fine way for them to mess with me, but eventually I'll find out if they were... Hopefully

Possibly it's someone you exchanged numbers with a long time ago who was using fake pics or someone's just shared your number.

I just use my phone cam and upload from gallery, nothing special really unless I edited it then saved on phone.

Haven't heard anything from him so far as he's blocked. that is hopefully the end of it. I'm far too busy with more important things than to waste my time on idiots hehe

I've just done a quick bit of research into exif data and looked at some of your photos with an app that shows the exif data.

If you looked at a photo directly on your phone, the exif data would probably show lots of info like the location (latitude/longitude etc). But even then, it doesn't include personal data like phone numbers or IMEI numbers or anything like that.

Looking at a couple of your pics on here all that data has been stripped out anyway. (Nice pics by the way.)

So I think he got your number some other way and he's messing with you. Best thing is what others have said, block and move on. And don't let one creep make you too paranoid, most people are nice and normal. You acted with common sense, you'll be fine

Fabs strips all that data so he couldn't do that either.

I've had messages from guys before asking for numbers/Info on people I've verified or been verified by to try and get meets with them.

Usually I tell the person they're asking about and if they want them messing with.

As I'm usually quite good friends with my meets we've had some good messing with the idiots.

If you report this to admin, provide his phone number, as that may help to pinpoint who he is. Especially so, if they've had similar reports from others.

Kudos to the user who checked what data your fab pics contained - which is zero. That's good news for us all.

I'm guessing admin may struggle a bit, if there's no current user to trace. But they have their ways and secret tools. Users getting accounts closed, then openings new one, seems a theme for a troublesome few.

I'd suggest setting message filters to block new or unverified users for a while, so that your fab account stays free from him.

I'm thinking admin have already had reports about him as he said his profile always gets deleted. And I've blocked unverified and new users since I was no longer in those categories

what a creep!, im pretty sure fab gets rid of the exif data so you cant see the information about the picture, people like that are reasons to steer far away from some on this site, some people are just socially inept.

So far as i know all you can get from exif data is geo-location.

I do think the internet has made it easier for creepy guys to gain access to people who would run away from them if they saw them in the street.

Unless you work for the nsa it's impossible to trace numbers through photos. Be aware that anyone can trace Facebook profiles with your email address. Hope your moby isn't on your fb profile, if you have one?
