Vehicle inspectorate. They check commercial vehicles and drivers.

Been stopped a few times over the years. Couple of good guys; couple of wanks.

Never say you're in a hurry is my advice. They'll make sure you're really late if you do!

VOSA do not have the right to stop any vehicles. That is why whenever they are doing inspections they are accompanied by police.

Although they are not on my Xmas card list they are there for a reason.

Imagine the heaps of shit that the more "unscrupulous" operators would take out on the road if they weren't around.

Some would have you driving 24/7 if they could get away with it too.

I've worked for two coach hire company's that really try to bend the rules.

You still don't say why you were detained. Commercial vehicles are often laden, let alone LGVs, and can potentially cause huge amounts of carnage in an accident.

So in my book, I'm glad they're checking and fining when appropriate. If vehicles were properly maintained, then there would be nothing to worry about.

So why were you detained?

Because there was a fault with the vehicle clearly lol.

Usually it's stuff like tread depth etc.

Got stopped in a tractor and trailer and not for the first time! I had just had an indicator lamp fall of when I had to pull off to the side on a narrow road and told the guy who gave me a prohibition notice, helped me find a way of making a temporary repair and then gave me a lifting of prohibition notice!

And yes, they can stop and check ANYONE regardless of what wheels they have!

And once they phone your employer told them you refused to stop and drove off in one of their vehicles you'll be losing your job as well as facing criminal charges.

"Just a point of law...

. I think they do. In any event , if you failed to stop you are probably encouraging VOSA to target your company and its drivers . Any responsible haulage company would expect its drivers to co operate fully with VOSA . If your company is on a green light status , you have nothing to fear .

And don`t forget, this is a Government Department, self funding or not, that can shut down a garage`s MOT testing facilities ultra quickly if it chooses to do so! In Poole there used to be Charlie Browns which was, I think, B&Q`s attempt to get into garages. It was as big as most B&Q outlets and had workshop facilities and MOT facilities and was bloody busy! A guy I know was told by VOSA that a "large garage in the area" was about to lose it`s MOT permit. Well that was Charley Browns which mysteriously burnt to the ground one night about 2 months later!!!

And if it`s illegal you`re putting THEIR operator`s licence at risk as well as your own driving licence! Then there`s also the start of a precedence that "X`s" agency drivers will drive any old shit which I`m sure the agency wouldn`t like to get a bad name for either!

DVSA as they are now known as, have the right to pull any vehicle they wish. They can even check to see how long it takes for your car to be tested in you local garage as the garage has to log the test on computer when starting the test.

They are looking at non compliant operators that run a light commercial fleet along with the HGV's and failure to have them road worthy can and will effect the operator licence.

That can cause serious problems when it comes to braking, you might not be able to stop when required or brakes lock up when you apply the foot brake, both are really serious. Should have been picked up within first few mins of driving or at 6 week inspection.

So again, the onus falls onto you to refuse to drive a sub-standard vehicle. It's your licence once you've accepted it regardless of whether you can immediately see faults or not.

If a vehicle looks in a shit state, then the chances are it's got problems that should render it liable to probe and prohibition by the powers that be.

Ignorance is no defence I`m an owner operator and if I fail to rectify any faults found it is down to me and I would expect anyone driving for me to refuse to drive unless I made the vehicle good for use . Any vehicle should be able to pass an mot inspection at any time.

I have to agree with the rest of them it is your responsibility to check your vehicles condition

however i know what agencys are like you refuse to take the vehicle your not getting anymore jobs from them so they move onto the next person to take the van out

as I got sacked for refusing to take the van out at the depot the reception staff of the agency told me to come into office as i quoted the van was unsafe to drive whilst the company said it was
