""So an EU referemdum in 3 years?

The forums will be kicking off! "

Yep, we'll have a referendum and if we the people decide to remain as part of Europe it won't stop the call for us to leave. Isn't that what referenda shows us?"

Indeed, nothing seems to get settled these days.

"maybe we should also ask who is going to be the next leader of labour and the lib dems... because they won't be able to stay...

Labour: the right brother this time?

The trouble with Labour is they are fast becoming the party of the Public Sector Unions, in a period of shrinking Public Sector.

I think Carswell will hold his dubious seat, I don't think Reckless won't hold his. The second seat will be Oop North and Farage will come second.

i think we should start with the exit poll to bring people up to speed...

the exit poll suggest that conservatives will win 316 seats.... labour 239, SNP 58, Lib Dems 10, Plaid 4, UKIP 2 and Greens 2... with 19 for other parties which includes all the parties in north ireland...

that "technically" leaves the tories 10 short of an over majority at 326... however because speaker doesn't vote.. and sinn fein dont take up their seats in the commons.. they may only need 323...

the conservative may do a deal with the unionist DUP in northern ireland... and UKIP on a vote by vote "supply" deal... which means they would have enough to form a minority government

one slight thing with regards to an EU referendum vote... they will need the vote thru the commons first.... the DUP don't support a referendum....... none of the parties in northern ireland do because they are net beneficaries......

But there are probably just enough independent backbenchers who would vote for a referendum. Unless they are whipped, of course.

One argument against a referendum is cost.

So why not a third voting slip today? The marginal cost couldn't be much.

Would increase turnout and democraccy.

Could have it every year, at Council elections, with issues of the day.

In hindsight it would have been more equal, and fairer, to split the 58 SNP candidates throughout the rest of the UK. At random.

When I went to vote earlier this evening, in the foyer of the polling station, there were people checking off our cards ...

Are these people doing basic polling and counting of attendance or statistics ?

Also one of them had a party rosette on the table in front of him

Is that undue influence ?

In the polling station area or outside? They are allowed outside but are not allowed to ask what you will vote. They can ask, and you can refuse, what you have voted as you exit.

Parties often try and get a sense of what the local turnout is in each area for their predictions of how they have done. A low turnout can work for some parties and not others.

It's interesting.

In 1997 the electorate emphatically voted the Tories out.

They don't seem to have done that this time.

Also, given that Labour have a cast iron, almost guaranteed, 200 seats, a prediction of only winning 239 isn't all that great.

"Big votes for UKIP in the first 2 seats, it could be that they poll a decent % of the vote while only winning a couple of seats."

The Lib Dems won nearly 25% of the votes in 2010 but got about 8% of the seats.

That's the FPTP system.

Disappointed none of the results in yet have had a candidate on the stage in a comedy outfit

Couple of rumours doing the rounds are Ed Balls to have lost his seat and Farage to come third in Thurrock. Still think we are in for a few twists and turns.

At double time, on public money, with a day off in lieu, wouldn't you?

It's not unlike a bus transfer at the airport, none of you can leave until the last one is on.

Hey Sunderland simplify it, have multiple boxes for the Labour vote, and a single rubbish bin for the others?

Hey Sexybum

If the Greens do win a seat in Bristol, how about using them as a guinea-pig for their policies and see if it catches on.

eg turn off all devices powered by fossil fuels, ie heating, lighting and transport and see if you still want Green policies.

Oh, and meet the extra costs out of Bristol West's council tax precept.

Thanks..

Were currently producing 15% of power from renewable sources thanks to campaigns from the green parties.

That aside we've personally spent 30k on our house to lower gas electric and water usage.... So yeah I put my money where my mouth and my heart is!

PS I walked to the city hall 3 miles and I'll be staggering home zig zagging probably 6 miles

Ok, Ok, i'll settle for your party turning the other 85% off.

Good on you, the vast majority though will not want to make any personal sacrifices regardless of who they will vote for.

The losers are ..the UK population. "

How do you work that out?

Surely the results reflect the views of the majority of the population.

Apart from those who don't bother to vote - but of course the answer to that one is obvious.

It's just like saying the the Scots lost out in the referendum last year.

Simply because what we, ordinary people want and vote for, isn't what we get.

In any case, for eg how do you reconcile the two parents, one who wants to get their child into the school across the road, together with their siblings, with the pushy parent who lives 10 miles away, cheats to get their precious into that school instead. I seriously doubt that the "out of catchments" are the majority.

Which politicians made that stupid f*cking rule in the first place.

Aside from Labour, the biggest fuck up and con in my lifetime was the 1974 re-organisation. Did the electorate vote for that? Ever get the chance to?

"I vote UKIP!!!!!!

.....

Why? I'm genuinely interested why you have.

"

I voted UKIP today, and there are many reasons why, here's just a few of them.....

1. I'd like to see Britain exit the EU, or at the very least we get a free and fair in/out referendum.

2. Scrap HS2

3. I'd like to see the UK have an australian style points based immigration system, and immigration reduced down to the tens of thousands not the 300,000 per year we are now currently getting.

4. New and better trade deals with countries outside of the EU.

5. Cut foreign aid, or transfer that money to maintain 2% of spending on our armed services instead.

Looking at the exit poll on sky news i'll be happy if it turns out to be accurate, just hope Cameron keeps his promise on an EU referendum, and does'nt try to slimeball his way out of it somewhere down the line.

Interesting that UKIP came 2nd to Labour in 2 of the northern results already, looking increasingly likely that UKIP will become the real opposition to Labour in many Labour held seats. Still confident UKIP will win around 5 seats, instead of the 2 the exit poll suggested.

Carswell to keep Southend (and he's welcome to it, it's a shit hole), and ascend to kipper leader...it's almost as if his ego lead him to it.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Increased Tory majority in seats.

Jim Murphy losing his seat will trigger another leadership vote in Scotland but who will be left?

"Increased Tory majority in seats.

Jim Murphy losing his seat will trigger another leadership vote in Scotland but who will be left?"

Labours policy is that the Scottish leader must be an MP/MSP, but the noises up here are that he will be staying (not sure how) and rumours of him having consulted a lawyer regarding this.

Also stories that Scottish labour might break away from UK labour to become a separate party.

No one, they will have to pluck someone from the Scottish assembly, or keep Murphy and hope he can find a way back. Another good politician and a great speech again.

I've been locked in a count since 10pm, what did I miss? (I really really really wish I'd booked a day of work tomorrow, and I've d*unk too much red bull to sleep )

If local experience anything to go by, Lib Dems being punished in the locals quite significantly this year too.

Lib dems being wiped out all over and Labour being wiped out in Scotland, suprised if Clegg and Miliband are still leaders tomorrow?

I thought that the move to the left by Labour would have helped secure more votes and it looks like I was wrong."

But isn't that the issue? Too left-wing for England, too right-wing for Scotland. Interesting results coming from Wales too

And Ian Davidson, some honest comments from him regarding their campaign in Scotland, also first to unsheath his knife saying Jim Murphys position "is untenable"

Just seen interview with Nicola Sturgeon and when asked about the conservatives returning to government she commented on the failure of Labour to stop DC returning to no. 10 rather than acknowledging, and more importantly, respecting the decision of the electorate.

So looking at the forecasts on the Beeb....projecting SNP gain 53 and Labour lose 19.

So does that imply Labour actually didn't do so badly in England? Because who the heck else have the SNP got those seats from in Scotland, were there many Lib Dem or Conservative seats there before?

Yes Anna, SNP taking seats from Labour and Lib dems in scotland. SNP already had 6 MP's from 2010 to begin with.

But for them to get to a projected gain (realise this is just forecasts) of 50 odd while labour are losing about 19/20 overall, to me implies Labour have taken quite a few in England (I guess from Lib Dems). So they haven't done as badly in England as they might have.

Actually, fuck it, my brain is tired.

However one last thing from me, a party which has criticised career politicians as people who have never done anything with their lives except politics, have elected a 20 year old politics student who hasn't even sat her final exams. Good luck to her, but howay

The SNP vote is based on some sort of completely ridiculous and utterly unfounded hatred of the English. Rampant Anglophobia stoked by complete bastards Scot and English born alike. For some reason Scots seem to think we actually like the bastards who screwed Scotland over. We don't they screwed the English over first and they are still doing it!

Why did all these voters not vote for independence when they had the chance?

The sooner Scotland get's independence the sooner the average working class English get their voice and freedom.

There were 11 lib-dems and 1 tory in 2010, SNP taking seats there as well as from labour.

Yes Labour have taken a handful of seats from the LibDems, and 2 from the Tories so far.

But a worse result than Gordon Brown can never be described as positive.
