this is where we will disagree, i think for what people have been thru for the right to secure the vote... you dishonour them...

even it is it just to spoil the ballot paper.. or write "none of the above" on it.... people should go into that ballot box...

I think if you don't vote... then please dont complain... but you had a chance in your own little way to make a difference....

disagree?

I ain't dishonoured anybody i am just exercise my right not to vote which i can do!

There is absolutely no point in going to "spoil the ballot paper" (in my opinion of course)

I won't vote and i won't complain either because i believe it won't make any difference but if you do fair enough go ahead and vote but don't try and make me feel bad about the choices i'm making i can live with my decision not to vote

What irritates me is having to hold my tongue and be civil when the Liberal twat outside the polling booth asks if i've voted for them.

Or maybe i should go early and tell him all the reasons (Clegg, fucking useless local councillors etc) why i may not have done.

Ha ha, in a liberal democracy, no way.

There again, i'd settle for that if "None of the above" was a valid voting option.

Wasn't it Belgium who went something like One and a half years without a parliament and nothing much went wrong.

Mind you, you could argue that nothing much happens at any time in Belgium ( apart from brewing good beers)

Force people into democracy?!"

The government forces us to do lots of things.

Why would the system that legitimises a government, who will force legislation on people, not be better served by having a representative view of every member of the public who meets the voting criteria?

They could vote for 'I don't wish to cast a vote' or 'none of the above' but they are still taking part in the democratic process.

I don't know if not voting counts as being democratic. I'm sure there's a philosophical argument to be had there another time.

I have to admit that until we had the referendum I had only voted once before (it was my 18th birthday-I voted because I could).

I was an undecided voter on the referendum so I went out of my way to find things out and see the debate before making my decision and it think really opened my eyes.

Maybe it takes something to affect us on a more personal level to make us take an interest. I'm not sure how they'd manage that or to build an interest with the bunch of twats they have leading the parties at the moment though.

Anarchy is a temporary state, always followed by a dictatorship. This will eventually be followed by other dictatorships after some kind af coup d'etat, then maybe a peoples revolution leading, eventually to some kind of democracy.

If you want to see anarchy in action, go to Somalis, see if you are OK with chaos after that.

I agree, that way if lets say for example 20% of people spoil a ballot paper, politicians can finally come to terms with how out of touch they are with people in the UK.

Hopefully it would make people read party manifestos more.

On this note, I'll say I've pretty much decided to vote green.

Seems like Gus O'Donnell is having to remind Cameron of the very agreement he signed up to with regards to who can form a government.

The only way we can truly achieve democracy is if every citizen votes - if that means making voting compulsory in order to ensure everyone voices their opinion so be it.

That is crap! At the last general election there was a 65% turn out. That means that 16 of the 46 million registered voters ere like you and didn't bother. That's more than any of the parties polled!

Do you really think that if 16 million spoiled their votes that the politicians wouldn't take notice and change their ways?

To be honest, no, I don't think it matters. They're successfully ignoring the 16m now for a start! It's a bit of a cheap shot, but none of them seem to be delivering on their manifestos these days either, so you could claim that they also ignore the 30m that DO vote!

I actually agree that voting should be compulsory, although I'd be more interested in coming up with a system that a) prevented MP self-interest leading to a "snouts in the trough" attitude once elected, b) forced a long term view to legislation instead of a five year one (or more commonly a reactive, "shutting the barn door" approach when something happens)

You can probably tell that I find politics deeply depressing - with a choice between rebuilding the deficit, losing the NHS, becoming a nation of racists, banning cars, or the lib dems, toothless cretins that they've been.

My biggest issue with the current voting system is that, on a ballot paper, there is no way to officially register a 'None of the above' vote.

Writing 'None of the Above' on the ballot voids it - you may as well draw a picture of a nice fat cock.

Voters should be able to register that None of the political parties are meeting their needs and that this should be reflected in the overall results. My guess is that the political system would be too scared to give the voting public that sort of option because of the results it may yield.

Yet I feel that more people would vote to register that they are dissatisfied with the state of the political landscape - perhaps many of those 16 million that didn't vote didn't do so because of this very fact.

After all, what's the overall difference between not voting and soiling your ballot when the outcome is the same?

Yes, but only as spoilt, which is not the same as a 'No' vote for the parties on offer.

I'm my view, a spoilt vote is the same as abstention, neither actually gets a point across.

I agree with most of what you say especially about voting being compulsory. However I profoundly disagree with you about spoiled ballots.

The bottom line is if you fail to vote what you are saying by default is you have no views or interest in who represents you or governs the country. Therefore also by default you are supporting whoever gets elected and give a green light to anyone who does not like your opinions to ignore them.

If you make the effort to spoil your paper your vote is recorded and published (the number of spoiled papers is the last figure to be read out by the returning officer (or their deputy)). If there were 16 million papers all spoiled saying none of them it is guaranteed that the party workers who act as scrutineers and the candidates who attend the counts and examine all that are not completed with the correct number of single 'X's in the boxes provided would be on the phones to their superiors!

A spoiled vote is counted and counts, not voting does not!

Everyone if you are unhappy with your candidates spoil your ballot but please use your vote don't waste it!

I have been politically active, and I have been to many counts and seen how the local party managers (of all parties) get together in huddles to find excuses to reduce the number of spoiled ballots!

Please everyone vote, and if you were not going to vote because you are disillusioned with our politicians spoil your paper! Write "none of them" across it, write "your all a bag of shite" or whatever you feel is appropriate. But VOTE! This is your only opportunity to make your voice heard!

Spoken like a true party manager, and true up to a point. However if the 16 million who fail to vote all spoiled their ballots then those numbers could not be ignored! I would love to wake up tomorrow to headlines saying that in 500/600+ constituencies there were more spoiled papers than votes cast for the winner and that the message on most was some variation on none of them. It would be interesting to see how Camorn Cleg Miliband and their public mouthpieces would be available to give interviews! Somehow I think they would all become very camera shy!

To truly represent the population U think that it should be mandatory that the only people that can stand for election are those that have lived in the parliamentary constituency as their main residence for at least 7 years. It would stop the elite putting up there mates in safe seats and the MP's would understand the needs and feelings of those they represent
