One day for preparation , another day for undercoats , first coat of emulsion and day three for final quotes

Last time i decorated i painted the ceilings, walls, put up wallpaper in my hall half way up, put borders up. Did some 'special effects' like stripes.
Had a flood, had 2 days to decorate it before i moved back in. Figured i cba to do the ceilings in case it flooded again, painted most of the walls, put borders around the top almost. It looks good so i'm happy. | |||

Last time i decorated i painted the ceilings, walls, put up wallpaper in my hall half way up, put borders up. Did some 'special effects' like stripes.
Had a flood, had 2 days to decorate it before i moved back in. Figured i cba to do the ceilings in case it flooded again, painted most of the walls, put borders around the top almost. "Nooo - don't gloss the walls, that's for woodwork and radiators (though I prefer satin for woodwork, a more subtle finish, less yellowing of white over time, and brushes clean out with water - as do any drips on the carpet). If you're doing a colour change on a wall, always do a base coat of white emulsion - you'll still probably need 2 coats of new colour. Don't use the cheapest paint - false economy, you'll probably need 3 coats or more. Always undercoat woodwork, it dries very quickly and stops any of the old colour showing so you might get away with one topcoat. The absolute best stuff in the world for stopping mould/stains/rusty nail heads/wood resin from knots etc leeching through the topcoat over time is Zinser shellac based paint. I just use it for spotting any dodgy stuff or stuff that's leeched through before. Use decorators caulk (cheap stuff is fine) to fill all gaps/seams/cracks/screwheads/nailheads in woodwork/coving, and small imperfections on walls. Gives a really good finish, if you get the knack (I apply it with an old credit card, or my finger on seams), it won't need sanding and you can paint on it after 10 min or so. I hate decorating too, though happy to do others places for money (or other benefit in kind)" Check you right out! I'm going to follow that to a tee! I didn't think to undercoat skirting boards!! I've also left the roller and brush (cutting in edges, shit hot, I know.) in a jug of water for the night? Is that the right thing to do? Also with the teal I was hoping to put a few horizontal lines along the wall (pretend I'm posh, show house like ont tele) should I use masking tape to create straight ages? THANKYOU | |||

Wow that's genuinely impressive! just looked at your pictures, you don't work in bamber bridge do you? "No i don't. Would genuinely consider decorating for someone though. Really do love decorating. Lol you can see my decorating ladders in the wonder woman pic. And yes i did that room too. | |||

"Zinser is brilliant great blocking qualities for anything you paint it over. If you are painting red, or yellow or anything you cold call a 'citrus' colour use a grey primer not a white one. " Yeah, they do other paints too, but I find their undercoat, whilst it has excellent opacity, too thick to work with quickly. Good call on the grey primer, but white emulsion is much less expensive and 2 good topcoats (unless it's a seriously good emulsion and you can get away with one) works well. | |||

Agree ^^ If you're going to use them with the same paint tomorrow, take them out of the water, squeeze off most of the water, wrap in an old cloth, and put in a plastic bag, dry them off more in the morning before using, otherwise, you'll start painting and water will start to come out of them. I use cheap bin liners and just leave rollers and brushes in the tray (empty out surplus paint first), then use the bin liner as a sleeve to enclose the tray, twisting the neck and tying a lazy thumbknot (so it's easy to undo). You can do this for a few successive days if you need to, but, depending on the quality of your brushes and rollers, after a while, the metal bits will rust and you don't want that tainting the paint. Cleaning rollers is a bitch. I run a hose pipe out down the garden (in my wildlife conservation area) and holding the roller in one hand, spray it with the hose. If you get the angle right, the roller will whiz round like a mad thing, flinging watery paint everywhere, but it's the quickest way I've found. Pull the roller off the handle and let it dry properly, otherwise it will trap water and the next time you use it, you'll get rust in your paint. I always find brushes and rollers work best if you dampen them slightly before use (but not for oil based gloss ! - need them totally dry) | |||
