There are some weird sayings around like "spit & polish." I mean, does anyone actually spit before they polish?

Any other strange sayings?

Spit and polish makes sense I think!

'I want, don't get' doesn't though.

It means ask nicely, don't demand.

I know that. But it's a stupid saying nonetheless.

no matter

Yes spit and polish on boots used to make the shiny toe cap

Bull polishing, bulling, spit polishing or spit shining refers to a method for polishing leather products in such a way as to give an extremely high shine effect.

Oh right, thought you was asking what it meant figuratively.

Think people use it coz it's better than slapping your kid round the head for being a little shit though.

No - I realised how stupid it was was (after hearing it my whole childhood) and then saying it to my son who looked at me bemused and said 'surely I should want it if I might get it'

Dogs seem to like them. They spend enough time licking them.

Bull in a china shop is a perfect simile of clumsiness.

Too many cooks, is a good simile of too much management pulling in different directions.

Suck it and see tells you that you won't know unless you try, and you might not like it.

Crying over spilt milk is pointless. It can't be unspilt.
