I went to Northumberland when they were building the Kielder Dam and reservoir. It was just a huge hole in the ground. The smell of the pine forests is something I will never forget, that and getting a little lost on our orienteering challenge

Titz Towers, North Notts

There's a lovely ship museum in Barrow. Hardknott pass is worth a drive over, just the once. Northumberland is gorgeous, Cragside, Bamburgh and a second hand book shop at Alnwick station are great. A boat trip around the Farne's is charming. Avoid Yeavering, there's sod all there.

Cool. I'm still loving my weird looking ergonomic pen. It's taken some practice, (because it requires a correct grip, which I didn't use originally), but I'm finally able to write properly, for a reasonable length of time with it.

I actually have 3 now because the original one was really part of a twin pack, (which was significantly cheaper than buying just one), and then I saw a metallic pink one...

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Why didn't anyone warn me about the hairpin bend on the A686?

Dramatic scenery at times. I'll get to the east coast tomorrow morning and hope the wind dies down before I get there.

You continuing on the 686 to Haydon Bridge or venturing on to the 689 through Wolsingham and Consett?

I'm past all that aren't I? I thought I'd head towards sea and see what I can see, see, see before turning around and tootling down the A1 home.

If you're wanting to stay closer to Newcastle and you have satnav, I would recommend St Mary's lighthouse while you are still North of the Tyne.

Then through to Marsden Grotto (pub cut into cliff face and a lovely stretch of water when the waves are crashing in) before heading South.

I didn't see this post before setting off so I didn't see any lighthouses.

I did go through the tunnel - they charge you to go to THE SOUTH.

I went to Bamburgh Castle and then did as Scotty said and drove along the coast road. You have a beautiful coastline.

£1.60 is a bargain to go through one of only 3 immersed tube tunnels in the UK and the first tunnel in the UK to have a fixed fire suppression system (and to be allowed to leave THE NORTH)
