"I have a fucked Cannondale caad8, the rear mech broke and hit the chain stay bending it. For commuting I have an old Raleigh X1 hybrid, bought it for £25 so it has done me proud. My pride and joy. A handbuilt Harry Quinn Reynolds 708 frame, built by me at one of his frame building courses. It have Campanolo groupset made up of CDA, record and Athena. It maybe 22 years old but it looks as good as the day I built it." Sound's fantastic.

"Carbon Ribble with campag veloce and fulcrum quattro's 853 cycle cross bike. Specced for the 3 peaks cross so an eclectic mix of bits, chorus transmission, scirrocco wheels sram 42, 27 chainset, Thompson finishing kit - bombproof! Aluminium track bike, weighs about 16lbs - so much fun to race on Original 1950s 531 mercian fixed road bike, modern campag pista and record The ribble is about to be upgraded, few candidates, lliking the titanium ribble but likely a ribble stealth (or whatever it's now called) with Campag Athena All bikes are shimano free zones" I like you alot Shimano free Don't get me wrong shimano is well made at the high end, durable and reliable but it lacks soul. Campag has character and flair.

" My first few bikes were shimano but first generation STI shifters were so ugly and they've never really improved in my opinion In all honesty if I was building up a track bike to race on seriously it would be hard to argue campag over shimano but on the road it's far superior

"Carrera Virtuoso currently but that will be replaced shortly by something a little more exotic now I've convinced Mrs JFL that it's not just a fad! Probably go for a second hand Boardman Pro-Carbon as the value of them seems to sink like a stone after a year or two, which is odd for such a well-regarded bike." All bikes are depreciating quick at the moment as 11 speed transmissions are filtering down the price ranges. Hopefully as development now seems to be in electronic transmissions it will stabilise. Well at least until the industry force disc brakes on us!

Hopefully this will still be the case in about 6 months time when Mrs JFL gives Purchase Director approval on my new bike (I'm guessing the best time to buy is going into Winter?)

September/October time is the best as shops are desperate to offload 2015 models so that they have floor space for the 2016 ones well before Christmas. Later than that and you'll get bigger discounts but less choice

Excellent value and awesome frames. But there is a lot of brand snobbery particularly as when they launched they were only available at Halfords. Work neat a boardman dealer who also stocks pinerellos and tge boardman's would get my vote every time

"Charge Plug fixed gear. Who needs lots of gears that can go wrong, just ride with one!" Fixed or single freewheel is great if you live in a flattish area with no hills!,Dutch & Belgian riders used to ride on single freewheels in winter and in 60s-70s a single fixed used to be common in UK for racing cyclists in winter.
