Bloody hell, that's ridiculous.

I was paying a little over £400 for my 3.8 litre American Sports car.

Transferred the insurance over to a 4 year old Yaris at Christmas, and the renewal came through a few weeks ago at around £475.

I compared with the meerkats and got that down to £289 - contacted my insurance company who then got it down to £285.

And that's with two senior named drivers on the policy too.

Your lack of no claims, plus fiestas/corsas/clios have a high claim frequency due to new drivers.

I use the compare sites, then go to the cheapest direct. Cut out the robot and meerkat. This year compare phoned me and asked if I was happy with what quotes they gave. I said no as my current insurer was the cheapest, they then said we may have one other company to try. Got transfered to rockys wife who was not fluxed, and they quoted me 25% less than that of what my insurer at the time was quoting.

Have to say mine has been getting cheaper each year, this year I paid 220 quid on an 18 month old dacia. I have full no claims, never had an accident or points. I guess it really is a postcode lottery these days.

Another way of reducing your insurance premiums, though it's not something that can be done instantly, but worth thinking about for the future, is to take an Advanced Driving test.

Both ROSPA and the IAM are recognised by insurance companies.

I did mine around 18 and a half years ago.

I've found that you only get offered discounts by the more expensive firms for having Advanced Driver..

Similarly, you find that the companies who fit black boxes are still more pricey than the cheapest firms.

Are you getting quotes for Fully Comp or third-Party?

I'm fully comprehensive.

For the car I normally drive, I can't use the comparison sites, as it's an American import and so I have to use specialist companies.

However, as I'm currently driving a Yaris , I CAN use them. As I was going through the questions on the meerkat one there was actually a question regarding Advanced driving qualifications.

To be honest though, cheaper insurance wasn't actually my motivation for doing the test. I wanted to be a safer driver.

That's who i'm with, but they are brokers, not an actual insurance company - but they should be able to get you a good deal.

I found the opposite was true. When I switched over from my 19 year old Sports coupe to a 4 year old supermini, the price went UP!

Older cars don't necessarily cost more to repair, in fact, more often than not, an insurance company will write the car off for what might normally be considered minor damage. Cars over 10 years old become more difficult to repair because the parts are less available.

Motor manufacturers only continue to produce replacement parts for 10 years after a vehicle goes out of production.

When i got my audi A4 1.9tdi avant 2003 model, was quoted around £2,000 by a few companies, that is with 3yrs no claims and a clean licence and 3rd party only, looked around other sites, southern rock qouted me £500 fully comp, previous insurer said she found a quote for £1500 3rd party, i said i found a quote for £500 fully comp and unlimited mileage and said can you beat that ? No was the answer, i said bye and put phone down, insurance companies are are rip off and set the rates to suit themselves,

The problem you have is because the car is old. What a lot of people started to do is get an old car get insurance as fully com on the cheap, which would allow them to drive another car on 3rd party (which could be worth of 20k). Insurance companies have clocked on so rather then saying that your pulling a fast one they are giving you a high price.

Maybe you can look at insurance company that installs a box in your car. So provide you drive good they will give you money back. Good luck.

Forget comparison sites use as guide perhaps go direct to the companies you will get better deal.

Comparison sites get a slice of action each time someone takes a policy out via them.

Prices are increased to allow for this. By going direct you can get in effect double discount persay.

Cut out middle man.

Your post code has a lot to do with it.

A friend of mine lives over your way and, for his motorbike, using the same details his insurance was over twice as much with his post code then if he used mine in the quote.

I did the same, unfortunately not a lot of insurers offering IAM reduced rates now, although the IAM have a few recommended companies.

Try insuring fully comp as bizarrely this can be cheaper than tpft.

Also get someone who has more experience than you as a named driver.

Even more bizarrely (wait for it) add a woman as a named driver. God knows why, most of them carry round a dustpan and brush to sweep up the broken glass from their mishaps.

Please note, some of the above information is genuine and 100% correct.

Other information may have been added or embellished for comedy effect......

This makes no difference. Premiums are all based on risk, and therefore will be based on the experience, age and sex of the riskiest driver being insured, particularly if they are the main driver.

Insurance companies are also wise of the fact that some car owners try to lower their premiums by having a less risky, more experienced driver as the main driver, with the more risky, less experienced driver as a named driver - when in fact that driver is the owner of the vehicle.

Apologies, I misquoted myself, what I meant to mean was the policy in your own name, which it should be, and having a more experienced driver as a named driver.

This happened to me a few years ago when I was married, went from a company car to having my own car, so nil no claims bonus. But having the policy in my name and the ex wife as a named driver the policy fee came down.

None of these may be valid points now as insurance companies change the rules the way most of us change our socks.

Choose employment carefully. I have to be artistic with what I put as its one of the highest risk categories. You do however find a similar named job description that means something totally different - and a fraction of the cost. That was from the horses mouth too. Guy I had a few years ago was really helpful telling me the ins and outs. So to speak
