Halloween

I dont go in for this trick or treat stuff. I've always found it really odd that we tell our kids not to talk to or accept things from strangers, and for one night a year we encourage it.

I'd rather invite my kids friends round and do a halloween party for them than encourage them to go knocking on strangers doors.

What do other people think?

If there is fun to be had - I am always game...

..

HOWEVER I do not agree with letting kids go round trick & treating. It is quite intimidating for older people and those living on their own, especially when said kids are over 16!!! Sorry to be a spoil sport here

Dont answer the door.

My parents frowned upon doorstep begging ..as they called it.

So nothing like that was allowed, even on bonfire night.

Its yet another americanism thats invaded us.

i think that as long as an adult or older teeneager type person goes then i see no harm in trick or treating

sadly it is one of the great experiences of growing up that seems to be dying off

halloween parties are great fun to but i used to love seeing all the groups of kids going round dressed up and trick of treating

what i dont like are the yobs who think pulling their hoodies up counts as costumes and expect treats plus they always start around the 16th

You tell them all sorts but if they are young you go round with them. When older , well they are already going out by them selves.

I am in 2 minds with it being an imported phenomenon but its far better than mischief night we had as kids.

Where we live there are always trick or treaters there is an unwritten rule that they only knock on doors that have a pumpkin lit or have some sort of halloween decorations up and it works well

We're near a primary school and most that we get are of that age and they all make a huge effort to dress up and they all look fabulous

When my children were younger they always had a fantastic time on Halloween

It was something my parents never allowed us to do so maybe it stems from that. Halloween can be fun without banging on peoples doors. I remember the bobbing apples and other games my mum organized. I never wanted to do trick or treating.

I like the idea but its a choice thing. In the US you tend to keep to your own streets with neighbors you usually know.

i always go out with the kids and make sure they only go to the houses on our street and people we know.

its not so much the hoodies doing it that annoys me its when same idiots are messing about with fireworks all times of night.

personally i think fireworks should either have a minimum age for buying of 25 or for them to be banned.

any other time of year you wouldnt let an 18 year old buy explosives so readily.

It's one of the biggest holiday nights in America and they go all out to decorate their houses, their streets and everyone joins in. The kids are safe because they go with their parents and everyone knows them.

Shame it's not run on the same sort of lines as it is in America. Would be much more fun for all.

Heard some kids walking up the drive say to others

'don't go there they only give bloody fruit'

Never been bothered since then

I spent a couple of Halloween's in my early teens in the hamptons and it was fantastic. It was a party atmosphere and some. I loved it

Im the same ... we're lucky that we have alot of places that do events for kids so dressing them up and having alternative fun to trick n treating is not a problem

I'm not a killjoy but tbh we have too many elderly people close to us and they just don't like gangs of kids knocking on the door on an evening ... I don't think they are being mean just they are frightened. Some of the teens that visit can be intimidating whether they mean to be or not and I say that as the parent of one of the teenagers in our area. Anyway there is no lack of fun of killing of joy when we throw a party

Its not that i class myself as a killjoy.

We didnt celebrate halloween as kids.

We had bonfire night with penny for the guy and carol singing.

But when you live in certain areas, its safer NOT to open the door to anyone rather than just a few.

The older ones just love tricking without any treats

Try scraping egg off ya door at midnight along with anything they care to throw.

And if i got my hands on them, i would certainly give them a treat
