I'm not sure how you get over it but our son is needle phobic, he passes out at the sight of them. If there is a way of overcoming it I'd love to know.

It could be treated like any other phobia

though it wouldn't be the same as being exposed to something like spiders or snakes

A fear of needles is very common. A phobia is differant.

I have a phobia. Not so much of the needle as i am fine with vaccinations and stuff its more blood tests for me.

I have tried all sorts including therapy, which i have to add was a pile of rubbish. Id love a resolution to it tho.

They don't bother me, which is a good job as I have to have my INR checked on a regular basis

The one needle I didn't particularly take kindly to was the one that was used to extract some of ma bone marrow for a biopsy, fook that hurt

Concentrate, breathe slowly in through your nose to a count of twelve, hold it for a count of twelve and blow slowly out through your mouth for a count of twelve while it's happening. Ask for numbing cream and make sure they know that you are scared.

I think a lot of times it's the anticipation rather than the actual event....when you are faced with it there is a good chance you will let it happen but maybe feel fearful inside. I find it helps to tell them I am nervous and they reassure me I will be fine. I also stare at the wall rather than watch them do it so that might help you too? Good luck xxx

They scratch slightly....tell them when you get there you have a bit of a fear as they deal with stuff like this a lot I bet...

When the time comes, just look away and let them carry on....it's quick, and just a scratch

Blimey for someone due to have an op this week you sound a bit of a woose.. Just turn your head away and think of something else . It doesnt hurt.. I had a lumpectomy so they removed tissue from the breast like you.. I was in and out in one day . It wasnt at all painful during or after. The scar healed beautifully. Be brave You have pain killers. good luck

Omg I stu is really scared of needles hate the feeling and look of them not to mention the thought of it going in your arm.. I had a bad experience with getting my bcg. To which there was alot of blood. But I hate blood tests so I had to get one 2 days ago and Wow what a difference I promise you i did not feel a thing aprently the needle is thinner and longer hence you don't feel it. Honest I can now go for a blood test. Ask them about it if you ever go.. It's a new thing they have started

I guess I still have to put up with the dreaded cannula maybe that will get improved one day lol..

My problem is they need ur permission, if u say no they wont do it. So many times ive been that brave to turn up but then i freak out and say no and they then refuse to do it.

It doesn't really hurt that much, if at all. I agree with the anticipation comment left above, you worry it will hurt more than it actually does.

I get bloods done every 3 months and i'm always a bit worried every time, but really i know that it's not gonna hurt and it doesn't. Mention your fear of needles coz it's likely they'll get an actual phlebotomist to sort you out instead of someone practising who might mess it up and make your fear worse. I was ok about needles until one woman spent 20 mins shoving a needle about in my arm trying to find my vein.

Go to a pharmacy and ask for Emla or Ametop topical numbing cream. Empty the tube on the area you are going to be canulated about 40 mins prior to the procedure. Also ask if they have Ethyl Chloride to spray on the area.

I'm terrified myself but needs must.... Always getting blood taken, currently getting dental treatment that requires needles too

I sweat, shake, hide under my jumper....ridiculous I'm 34!!

But my mother was exactly the same...terrified of needles..... But the need for heroin outweighed her phobia

It doesn't hurt and it is no big deal, however I don't have a phobia or fear of them.

It's a,necessity if you require medical intervention. You do have a choice though, you can choose not to go ahead with the procedure. Or ask if you can have the procedure without any anaesthetic. I can assure you the scalpel hurts much more than a tiny needle.

It's a totally rational phobia to have but it's not dangerous. The best thing you can do is not let the tension mount towards the event and not focus on what's bothering you.

Plan the event in your head, you're going to sit in a waiting room for a while, get your name called, you're gonna talk to a nurse and she'll do her job while you're asking her how she is and telling her that you're a bit nervous. Wear a tshirt so you're not faffing about rolling your sleeve up and wasting time pondering the finer details, she'll tell you it won't hurt, you say 'ok, do it', she does it, it doesn't hurt, you go and get sweeties. Simple. Don't forget to say thanks.

For me my fear of needles is very strange. I have quite a lot of ink and have spent over 30hrs getting work done BUT I'm petrified of needles of the injection variety and have on several occasions got very wobbly legs and felt close to fainting when having jabs etc.

Always remember that fear is a good thing, it's what keeps us alive and keeps us safe, it makes you cautious and protects you from danger.

The 'trick' is to control your fear and try and keep it rational.

Irrational fear can be induced by just about anything at all, medical cannula's are just one that represents a major fear many people.

One such example was a student nurse who requested to observe my wife's hysterectomy. The nurse passed out in the operating theater... on the FIRST needle insertion! Soon recovered, she was fine watching the rest of the procedure... go figure!

Irrational fear of most things can be cured with the 'three steps forward and two back' method.

Put simply, the victim of the fear is set at a point of 'safety' of THEIR choosing away from the object of fear. They should then be gently encouraged to take a few steps closer to the object to as close as they are comfortable and then ONE more step closer. Their support reminds them that they can back away at any time and at some point they should take one step back. This (should) take most, if not all of the pressure away.

The support should build their confidence by pointing out that they have got closer to the object and they are still perfectly safe, nothing nasty has happened. Quite the opposite, they have achieved something, they have, in part at least beaten some of the fear.

At this point, with the fear victim maybe 95% comfortable, they should be encouraged to build on the achievement and try and take a couple of steps closer to the point of it being uncomfortable again. Hold the proximity for a short while and then one step back. Of course support should constantly remind them of the massive achievement of 'by free will' approaching the object of fear... and so on.

Doesn't matter how long it takes, nothing should be forced, the key is that the person reduces that distance by themselves, by free will not force in a measurable way so the person can SEE they are making progress.

There is only one true fear... and that is the fear of fear itself. However, it is required that the person WANTS to overcome the fear.

Top tip if they ask if you mind the trainee doing it say no! Unless you want a bruised and stiff arm. Other than it really does not hurt, if they flush the line and push it through hard it can feel a bit uncomfortable.

I hada trainee last time i went to the GUM clinic. ...ended up with my blood all over the floor. Its a good job I'm not bothered by it anymore

Whenever I have an injection, as the needle pulls out I get a strong metallic taste in my mouth and my mouth waters profusely. Very odd. The doctor did tell me what it is called, but I can't remember lol

I do however have tbe most atrocious veins so it can take quite a few goes I'm various locations before they get anywhere.

For one they were about to give up after six attempts but I told them that I didn't care where they eventually managed to get it in as long as they succeeded as I wasn't going back to have it done again!

I definitely got rid of any lingering fear when I had to inject myself daily. Not in tbe same realm as a diabetic but the alternative would have been to wait in half the day for the overworked district nurses. So I bit the bullet and got shown how to do it myself.

Just keep them informed. As long as they know if you're nervous or have tricky veins they will accommodate that.

Ops are easier cos they give you the good stuff straight off - surgeons have no desire to deal with coherent patients so ensure you're properly away before the. come near!

A "needle" as used for injections/blood samples is incredibly sharp. A prick on your finger by a sewing needle or drawing pin is far more painful. The medical needle or canula, feels like a scratch as it enters, once its in, you can feel it, but it doesn't actually hurt.

I fainted twice getting a small tattoo on the side of my wrist... Once while he was doing it and once in the floor outside the shop .. . Went on to have a big one on my thigh... Didn't bat an eyelid.. .but needles.. . Nah mate.

See as someone who has got a phobia this kind of comment is so damn annoying. It doesnt hurt. I know it doesnt hurt. Its not about it hurting. And i get so angry when people say "dont be silly it doesnt hurt" I think with most phobias its all a mental thing that each and everyone of us twists so differantly in our own head that this is where getting help for the phobia is so hard.

The numbing cream helps u to not know the needle has gone in.....or for me thats all it does so u can try to trick ur mind into not knowing when its peirced the skin.

I will have nitemeres for days (well nignts) about people strapping me down and trying to get blood. Hense why its only happened once in 15years.

Its all in the mind and the mind is a very powerful thing......in both good and bad ways.

But please.............we know it doesnt hurt!!!

I've always been terrible with injections and worse with blood tests but have lots of tattoos and some over 3 hour sittings doesn't bothet be at all.

However during pregnsncy with the amount of blood tests and then having to have IV and pethadine, plus the injection to get the placenta out and the depo every 12 weeks Ive gotten over it now!

I was in and out of hospital as a child constantly having blood tests and although I never liked it, it never really bothered me either. Then one day when I was about 9 the needle somehow got bent inside my arm and snapped off, they had a right time getting it out, I was hysterical and I've had a phobia ever since. I do have piercings and tattoos, getting a tattoo doesn't bother me but I have to close my eyes when getting pierced. If I see a needle I go into full panic.

So what do you think your phobia is actually based on? If its not the pain issue, its obviously something else. Is it just the idea of a foreign body piercing your skin? Is it blood related? Analalyse it, and it will help you to rationalise it, and hopefully overcome it.

I can empathise with this topic. Had a phobia of needles for years. However a couple of weeks ago I've had to give blood on a couple of occasions, thought I'd got away with it considering I'm 36 in a couple of months time.

The first time I was so nervous and though I couldn't go through with it. I used the local anaesthetic cream on my arm before giving blood and didn't feel a thing. The funny thing was the nurse asked me how long I'd had the cream on for. I told her it had been about an hour and a quarter, which I thought was ok considering instructions say apply 1 to 5 hours before procedure. It was after giving blood that the nurse then told me that she was concerned might not find a vein as cream should only apply upto 20 minutes before. Lol.

Anyway the second time I was much more relaxed and gave blood without a hitch. My confidence was given such a boost.

. I do the putting of needles in. That's how I get over it..

I'm a phlebotomist and it is surprising how many people are terrified of needles especially grown built like brick shithouse covered in tattoos guys,,but the art to getting them over it from my perspective is to talk to the patient while doing the procedure 9/10 times they don't realise you have done it till you say hold that.....

I am terrified of needles too.

When combined with a visit to the Dentist, it has been the case that I'm prescribed Diazepam or similar to calm me down!

But consider the situation when back in 1988, I'd major eye surgery, spread over 5 operations in 7 months. One of the operations was done under local anaesthetic, involving inserting a needle into the side of the eye-ball. Just being told this, made me faint, but in reality with so many eye drops put in beforehand to numb the entire area, I felt no pain at all, just the sensation of the needle going in.

I can get through Blood Tests ... just! My GP's Senior Nurse is very good when I go for my Diabetic re_iews every 6 months. There is apparently a saying in Medical circles though, that many people suffer from WCS when it comes to taking blood for Testing. WCS stands for "White Coat Syndrome"!

Mind you, my fear didn't improve at all, when last September having visited my GP's surgery and the Doc called an ambulance immediately to rush me in to hospital, the arriving Paramedics spent 20 minutes trying to get a Canula into the back of both hands, spanning 8 or 9 attempts, without success.

The GP's Nurse too over and did it in one go, but the backs of my hands were black and blue for days! The Hospital nursing staff were not impressed by the Paramedics ham-fisted efforts.

Oddly, I have no problem doing my daily Blood Sugar checks involving pricking the finger to get a blood sample for testing.

During my 2 pregnancies whenever I had blood tests the nurses always suggested I might want to look away.... I always laughed in their faces (not nastily) and said I wasn't bothered in the slightest and would even point them to my best vein lol

They always gave me the most suprised looks

I'm a bit weird though lol I like needles .

Best one was havin to retake all of my blood tests again as I moved hospitals at 39 weeks... They booked me in for 3 separate appointments but I ended up able to do all 8 viles in one sitting as when he started he was amazed at how healthy my blood was and how easily it flowed

The numbing cream helps u to not know the needle has gone in.....or for me thats all it does so u can try to trick ur mind into not knowing when its peirced the skin.

I will have nitemeres for days (well nignts) about people strapping me down and trying to get blood. Hense why its only happened once in 15years.

Its all in the mind and the mind is a very powerful thing......in both good and bad ways.

But please.............we know it doesnt hurt!!!

For me its the needle peircing a vein. I sleep (well fall asleep) in a position where my neck, inside arms and wrists are covered.

I dont know where it came from. When i was having counciling for it the threapist was adament something happened in my childhood but my folks have said not. The counciling didnt help me at all. Because my rational of it is so weird sge wasnt able to help me much as im ok with needles/injections not into a vein and im ok eith blood.

Guess im just weird lol.

I'm fine with vaccinations.

Not so good with blood tests, but that's probably because the last time I had one I passed out. No idea why and could have been any reason.

I was also fine when I had my tattoos - and the last one I had (blimey, nearly 11 years ago now) was a little painful as it was across my lower back - and had a lot of outline.

A fear of needles is very common. A phobia is differant.

I have a phobia. Not so much of the needle as i am fine with vaccinations and stuff its more blood tests for me.

I have tried all sorts including therapy, which i have to add was a pile of rubbish. Id love a resolution to it tho."

I take blood daily and give injections and diabetic. As a kid i had a major fear of needles now i dont think about.

The alternative didn't bear thinking about so I just got on with it. First injection took about 45mins though lol.

I have to have my bloods done every 6 weeks because of the medication I'm on. I'm not scared of needles or the pain but the nurse doing my bloods has to sing or talk loudly, she normally just says "sharp scratch, la la la la la" because the sound of the tubes filling up with my blood goes through me, makes me feel sick, makes me think of mortality the same as I can't stand the noise of ticking clocks and watches! Now that's weird!
