News is emerging that British aid worker Linda Norgrove may have been accidentally killed by US forces during a rescue mission in Afghanistan. It is thought that a grenade thrown by US Special Forces may have inadvertently killed the person they were trying to liberate.

Bad call by Hague not to use British personnel. Bad call by Hague to call in a rescue mission in the first place when local tribal elders were calling for more time to secure her release using negotiation.

Bad call all round. Poor lass, she was fucked from the moment they took her.

Just seen this on the TV on my lunch break.

So to add to the complete heart break her family are suffering they get a side order of mind crushing frustration that it could have been avoided.

When you have to invent a term like 'friendly fire' because it happens so often you really need to stop throwing fucking grenades at everything that fucking moves!

Well, not got a lot of sympathy for her - she went to a war zone at her own risk, got captured by murderous fanatics and her rescuers were prepared to risk their own lives to free her instead of leaving her to her fate. They tried their best - would you like to rope down from a helicopter in the night into an armed camp full of suicidal barbarians?

Let's just hope her captors were all killed, sending the message - mess with one of us, and you're dead!

Wow!! I can just imagine the response if I'd posted serves the British troops right they're being blown to smitherins. Get out of other peoples country and leave the barbarians to it!

Personally I wouldn't contemplate helping these people, someone with values different to my own has died an awful death trying to do good! Oscar Wilde said "no good deed goes unpunished" but damn people, you're cold!

About time people learned to say "thanks" even if something went wrong. But no, as usual, media frenzy over "OMG THEY FUCKED UP".

So the Special Services guys didn't have heat vision goggles, didn't recon the place properly before storming in and decided that a well aimed grenade would take care of whoever is in a particular room. Didn't they have a goddam plan or was it all just a Tally Ho Pip Pip and Let's At 'Em Boys kinda approach.

They ballsed it up and there's no getting away from that, and a young woman has lost her life because of it.

They ought to be ashamed of calling themselves 'Professional'.

I will wait until all the facts come out before commenting either way. you have to feel for her family though they didn't need all the press reports.

I must be psychic as when i heard that she and 8 of her kidnappers were killed, I actually said "bet she was killed by friendly fire".

love camerons respons. The decision was totally william hagues and i backed it...in other words, i trusted him to make the right decision...

Cant believe the insensitive comment from _eakcouple the woman went because of her true christian spirit to help others and not for personal gain.

There are others who are in the country solely to see what they can take out of it but not her.

She did not deserve her fate and probably would not have wanted others to risk thier lives for her anyway, believe it or not there are such people in this world even today.

Why not think about how you go into a area that has no light, 20 plus armed people.

Who will die with out question when told too.

Its not an easy job Is CQB.

If you can do better then you go and try a day at doing CQB and then post.

I read an interview recently that said "your next breath is not promised"

Life is indeed fleeting.

No matter who you are, when you enter a known war zone, you are putting yourself at risk, this woman knew the possibility existed and she chose to go anyway; for her, it was the right decision.

I agree partially with the comments about un-escorted aids going out there and putting themselves at risk...as they, in turn, put the lives of the rescuers at risk...however, like this woman, the soldiers out there know what they are there for.

In response to the fact that it is media hype; I would hate to think that Cameron would address an already distraught family ahead of formally notifying the press, telling them that this was going to be investigated unless there was some chance that there was some truth in that.
