ok went to _iew whats to be our new council house yesterday gotta take it cos its got a lift so i can get upstairs.the house has been left a complete shithole walls full of holes damp in livivng room(ihope council will sort this out)no paper on walls just paint bathroom tiles disgusting you name it theres summat wrong with it we were so upset after we _iewed it.as i,ve still not received any sckness money yet we are living off becks wage 180 pwk we need some money saving ideas for decorating any tips greatfully recieved

The cheapest option is to roller the walls with paint. The holes and the damp should be sorted though, get onto housing and tell them your situation and take pictures of the bad points in the property to show if you have to.

sorry to hear your new house is in such a state but you can make it look like "home" very cheaply ...

start by buying the biggest tub of white paint you can get and paint the whole house (white paint is very inexpensive) and colour code you rooms with accessories ... cusions and canvas prints in a nice warm colour for your living room, a couple of cheap lights and vases in the same colour instantly gives ur living room a lift .

bedrooms much the same, nice warm toned bedcovers and prints in the same colour.

bathrooms can be transformed very easily ... i belive you can get tile paint to spruce up the tiles, a few bright towels and accessories and woosh new bathroom.

Have a paint party, get gallons of a neutral colour to use right through the flat/house and invite lots of friends to turn up with rollers and brushes to help you out, all you have to do is provide sandwiches and cups of tea.... usually they turn out to be a lot of laughs and if you are laughing along with friends you cannot help but change the miserable atmosphere of the place.

A great idea and my daughter did a similar thing ... just put gown plenty of dust/plastic sheets as it can get a bit messy when the alcohol starts flowing

speaking as a decorator..as far as paint is concerned you really do get what you pay for. 'own brand' paint from places such as b&q and homebase contain less pigments and are thinner and give an inferior finish. for the walls if you can afford it get Dulux or Crown emulsion.(matt gives a better coverage but is not ideal for kitchens or bathrooms) You can thin this with water by 10-15% so it will go further and give a better finish. even the Dulux paint you get in b&q is not the same as you get in a Dulux Decorator Centre.

When we brought our first place (many years ago) it was a complete tip, the previous owners had been renting it out and it was a total mess.

We decided to concentrate on one room at a time, we only had a tiny budget and the joy we got everytime we managed to do up a room was more than money could buy.

It was a long slog, with lots of saving up between doing each and every room, but to be honest it was the happiest we have ever been....sometimes you find the hard times can be the best times of your life!

Agree with earlier post - you really do get what you pay for paint wise. I'm a decorator too and I use Glidden from Travis Perkins - it's made by ICI (guys who own Dulux) and at £15 for 10 litres is the best compromise I've found for price vs quality.

Most importantly though it's amazing what a lick of paint can do to brighten a place up and it also makes it feel more like yours too. It might not fix all the problems but with such a big difference made in a short time for little money the rest will feel less daunting.

Can you not get the council to do the improvements and decorating for you?

I thought it would be there responsibility to make sure all rooms are decorated to a reasonble basic standard as well as making sure such things like damp holes and other structural faults are taken care of.

I would check with CAB cos it sounds like your council are just trying to get out of their responsibilities to a tenant. If this was a landlord he could be taken to a rent tribunal so council should know better.

Alot of councils have a scheme in which they give you the money to do the decorating. Does yours ?

Check also with the disability side of things, you can often get a grant to help.

The council have a duty of care and to make sure your home is fit for purpose. Take some pics and threaten them with the local papers if they dont help
