Locked up in a police station overnight.. not much. Locked up in prison.. depends on the circumstances. Locked up in a mental health institution or somewhere that's for the person's own good.. too bloody much

Armed robbery. Cash machine raids. Kick someone to death, chop them up and dump their body parts in a nature reserve. Drug dealing. Drug growing. Handling stolen goods. Stab someone. Fraud. I know people who went away for all of those crimes. There's lots more.

Depends on the judge, and how serious they judge your offence. Plus how serious the offence is as well and whether it would be in the publics interest to put you in prison. Main reasons.

Depends whether you can look like you're sorry. Stories based on bullshit can help, such as saying you did a crime because of video games. Depends on your personal circumstances, and for petty crimes this will likely be used as the basis for why you did a crime, eg stealing to feed an addiction or because you are poor can get you leniency.

Proper justice focuses on protecting the rest of the population by rehabilitation, rather than punishment. And trying to create a society where people don't feel a need to commit crimes in the first place.

I do know a couple of dodgy bastards who have done some of them but no,it's not the same person. We used to watch Crimewatch to see who would pop up we know. Sad world we live in.

Forgot, if you can't pay a fine or have previously not paid fines and can't be trusted to pay it then prison.

If they think you'll skip bail, then prison before being judged and sentenced.

Repeat offender and the judge is sick of seeing you, prison.

It's thought it's better to keep people out of prison and have them function as a law abiding member of society.

Wish i was in the conversation...

I used to associate with a lot of murky characters myself when I was younger (remember i told you i'd done some stupid shit?.....there some of it is) untill our friend went to pick up.....he was shot, robbed of his gold and £13000 buy money and left to die in a back yard amongst the bins....I left any shady shit behind me that day, squared up my end, and never looked back.

If your a woman it takes a hell of a lot more to get a prison sentence and you'll get a much shorter one.

In all seriousness, if the court can prove some 'gang' connection, then chances are you'll go down regardless of your crime.

Although this was the case around 3 years ago. Not sure if they've eased up on this and thought of a new focus recently.

There is no need to break the law to get locked up in police cells or even be convicted and spend time in prison.

The naked rambler Stephen Gough has served many years in prison for being naked even though there is no law that requires people to wear clothes.

I would say the way our legal system is set up ... it would take quite a lot to land someone in prison.

I have never been arrested (other than d*unk and disorderly when I was 19) and I don't have any criminal convictions.

I am though extremely interested in our legal system and to actually get a conviction on somebody is extremely complex.

So I would say it would take quite a lot to get a custodial sentence.

Tax avoidance/fraud of any type is probably the easiest one to have the book thrown at you.

Some people become institutionalised and commit any crime just to get back inside.

Yep!

And I've known someone who when he became homeless committed non-violent crimes that as far as possible had no negative impact on anyone (it can be done!!) just to get some time in a cell during winter.

Sad - but true.
