yet another laptop help request

Reinstalled windows operating system on an old laptop that had serious virus issues. None of the drivers were installed. I'm going to download the network driver via another laptop. Once I have done that will I be able to automatically update all drivers or will I have to look for them manually? I don't even know which drivers I will need,my brain doesn't work for things like this any more. I assumed there was a driver cd with the operating system one,I was wrong. Also which useful programs would I need? Flash player, java etc. I can't remember anything at the moment. I'm drawing blanks .

You'll probably need to get them all manually, you should be able to get them from the manufacturers website.

To be honest, it all depends on the hardware, the operating system.

Usually, when a new operating system is released, drivers are available for all currently available - and some older hardware and are either bundled with Windows or windows can find it over the internet during an install.

Usually problems occur when hardware has gone 'out of service life' and is no longer supported, but there are some work arounds for this. For example, I have a very good flat bed scanner, but is no longer supported, but I found a useful solution to the problem in the form of an aftermarket app.

I also have an old Laser printer, which amazingly still has driver support under windows - but I had to do a google search which identified that I needed to install it as something slightly different (just a different model number) - but then, I have to install my printers manually as they are connected to a Network Printer server box and not directly to my PC.

That said, having previously worked in the city as an IT support Manager, I tend to take more control over installations on my machines over the automatic options.

For example, I don't have automatic updates set, but instead have it set to inform me only and allow me to choose which ones to install.

Also can not stand this new Windows 8. It is positively horrid. Recently got a new laptop which has this rubbish pre-installed. I would have preferred it to have Win 7 on, but that's just not a possibility. I have, however, found a great little third party app which gives me the GUI (graphic user interface) akin to Win 7 and allows me to practically get rid of the awful Metro interface.

you need a driver for every piece of hw, + a lot of software.

you will also need codecs for the media player/s you use.

but generally drivers are installed with the operating sys.

so depends what op system you put on. im guessing xp/vista/7/8?

just focus on getting connected to the internet, you can download the rest from there.

your operating system should have given you the drivers necessary for a bog standard network connection.

unless youre trying to wifi or something using a pre-wifi os like xp.

but even vista has wifi, so if you have a smart phone - scan for the smartphoen network and just connect to that

Try a product called DriverMax, which can automatically scan for the drivers you need and download/install them.

Or, its a trip to the Dell Support site, enter your service tag and download/install one at a time.

Vista. Oh dear. Bloody awful OS that one.

I'd ditch it and install either XP or 7 if you can.

Couple of things i would mention.....

Firstly Win Vista is a horrendous OS and i would highly recommend upgrading to win 7 ASAP ! Vista is full of security holes hence your virus problem.

Secondly check how much ram you have as if its more than 3GB you need to install a 64bit OS in order to utilise all the ram

And finally once you have the driver for your wifi, go to Dell support and downlaod the latest drivers from there, they will be the most reliable

Dont install XP - Official support ended a year ago and many of the latest Apps are no longer compatible (Java 8 for example).

Agree with Sam&Jamie - Go Windows 7 if at all possible. Vista is an utter dogs breakfast of an OS.

If I can get it free I will use Windows. We have Windows 8 on another laptop I think is ok. I only want to download and edit music and let the grandchildren play games on it. It was given to us.
