Why do topics close at 175?

2 topics weve started are closed as they reached 175 posts doesn't that mean they are popular? Lol why close them.

Very long threads are impossible to read or to get back to the top of. People can start a second thread on the same subject when the first one closes.

Imagine if one never closed - daft.

Plus if you read a 175 thread about 10% of the comments are on topic and the rest are chit chat of one sort or another. It's not always the topic that keeps something going but the banter between contributors.

It auto closes at 175..it isn't about whether people are enjoying them or not.

Unless it says a mod has closed the thread then people just start another

I assume it's because loading 175+ comments is quite a workload.

If however paging (in the sense of "Page 3 of 10" etc.) were implemented, this would be less of an issue.

BUT forums can be very different. I'm sure the administrators have their reasoning

The fact that very few threads reopen in a second thread after reaching 175 suggests the limit is about right and they close when a topic has been done to death
