And as I offered before, because everyone is unique and what might work for me may not work for you..........speak to a personal trainer at your gym who will chat about your goals and time constraints etc and put together the best advice for you.

You'll get dozens of different ideas from people here and end up completely confused.

Will there be someone at the gym who will help?

Depends on what gym you're going to of course, but there'll be instructors and trainers there to help anyone out. Most are quite willing to offer their advice and for a small fee will put together a training program tailored to suit you

It'll only work if you change the lifestyle you're in now. Eat clean, train hard, commit to the program, follow trainers advice. The only person who can contribute to your success or failure is you.

Like you I started to keep fit and try and he healthy last September x

By walking 40 mins each day it equated to 200 cals

I kept to 2000 cals each day and cut out mid week drinking

I lost 2 stone in 2 weeks and in the most part have kept it off

My advice is eat less x move more x drink sensible at weekends

Best results for losing weight quick is 2mins intense fitness (pushing yourself) followed by 1 min of going easy (deep breathing/ stretches) repeat this 7/8 times and your body will continue to burn fat throughout the day.

It's mostly about what you eat. You can't out train a bad diet as the saying goes!! Yes obviously exercise helps but you need to overhaul your diet if you wanna see some serious change.

If its your first time there they will have to have someone do an induction with you so you know how to use all the equipment. Then they will leave you alone to have a work out.

Don't go and kill yourself in the first few sessions find a level then look to improve on each thing as you go along. I would say being new there take a small note pad to record what you are doing so when you go back you will know what you did last time and where you need to be to improve on last time.

there is a web site called bodybuild dot com which is full of ideas and exercise routines for the beginner through to the more experienced. Its an exercise site and not just for body builders. Good luck

Again, only you can motivate yourself. Nobody can do the work for you.

People can say 'go on, you can do it' and all manner of motivational things but at the end of it all, you've still got to do the training yourself

For this get yourself into a routine as quickly as possible and stick to it then it becomes second nature. What I mean by this is chose some days you want to work out on best try one on one off to get some rest in between and stick to them. Also a big thing is sleep allowing your body to repair and also burn fat. You can't eat whilst you sleep

You don't. They can shrink and fade. You can use bio oil or similar to reduce them but theres no exercise that will make them go away as such

It's one of the downsides of having stretched your skin in the first place. Same as after pregnancy!! Likely they will be much less noticeable and fade like I said. It's the same as excesss skin after weight loss, you can train and diet and tone as much as possible but sometimes the only way to get shot is with surgery.

Yup skin is elastic by nature so will shrink but there will be signs of stretching but over time these will fade more and more. Don't be disheartened by that fact just focus on where you want to be and the rest will follow.

Its easy, its all about calories, men maintain with 2500 and you need to go way under to 1500 aday, with less carbs and most of the calories should come from protein and veg and do 3omin cardio aday plus weights

First of all if weight lost is your target diet is what you should be looking at first and foremost.

Myfitnespal track everything you eat for a week and get a basis.

The Iifym site has a good calculator for working out the macros you should be aiming for.

Keep protien high helps with the hunger and willpower.

Bio oil can help make them less visible but they are where you've torn the middle layer of your skin and no longer have collagen fibres running through.

They are scars and cannot be removed completely.

"If you look at pro sportsmen and women; they do not diet and exercise. They eat and train. That is the key."

Diet does not mean "Omg eat nothing" diet is just the correct name for what you eat.

For example "the koala bear lives on a diet of eucalyptus leaves"

Doesn't mean the bear is trying to get rid of its winter weight.

This!

Also (and I am not suggesting calorie counting at all but advocate a protein rich low carb diet) please don't be fooled that anybody can actually lose a stone a week - if they do it is initially mainly water that they lose.

To genujinely lose a kilo of fat(2.2 pounds approx) the body has to have a calorie deficit of 7000 cals.

The average man uses around 2500 cals a day to maintain body weight so in order to lose a stone of body fat (6.3 kilos) you have to have a deficit of 6.3 x 7000 cals - it simply cannot be done in a week, not even with intense excercise.

The reason I am saying this is that people get disheartened so easily when they are promised a huge weight loss and it then does not happen. General medical advice is not to lose more than 2 or max 3 lbs ( 1 kilo to 1.3 approx) per week to ensure steady and healthy weight loss.

Best of luck - once you start seeing results you ll be on a high!

The Brownlee brothers do not "diet" or eat particularly healthy. Just a calorie high diet including takeaways. Simply about eating and training. Too much emphasis is on "dieting" when basically you just need to train harder to get desired results.

If you are looking for specific goals like body fat loss then what you are eating is important. People use the term diet and think Atkins, WW, SW etc. Eat what you want and if you have some treats, put a bit more effort in training. Far more effective and less pressure driven.

I wish it were that simple - lots of bodybuilders would prefer to follow that rather than their carefully planned diet and exercise regime.

The OP by the sound of it wants to achieve fat loss - you cannot out train a poor diet and fat loss is about 80% diet and 20% training.

When I use the term diet I don't necessarily mean a specific diet although ketogenic (high protein/ low carb) seems to be a very effective way to achieve a constant and achievable weight loss without muscle wasting and permanent hunger.

...again your confusing diet as in fad diet and diet as in the correct term for what you eat.

You can bet the brown Lee brothers have a specific dietary plan. Based on xyz amounts of carbs, fats and protien. Again if it fits your macros.

Trying to make calorie deficits purely though training then pointing at high level progression athletes as an example is jist going to lead people to failure

Carrie deficits can be made much easier and in a much more controlable way through correct food intake vs trying to run the extra calories off.

The best way is the way you can actually do. Most people can be kept motivated to conteol thier food intake much better than they can be motivated to do high intensity excercise

I was not commenting regarding the OP specifically. I am not confusing diet with fad diet. I agree diet or, fuel, is what goes into our mouthes.

I was part of the team with the Brownlees nearly 6 years ago and we basically ate what we wanted. The week leading to a comp was slightly different to avoid fatigue and cramps etc.

BTW, I am not saying I was there standard. I was not. Not even close.....and then the classic ruptured achillies ruined my Olympic dream

The key is keep training fun and varied. Do not make it a chore.

If they have it at your gym try body pump. Fantastic for losing a bit of weight and shaping up.

I went twice a week from January to March along with sorting my diet out (my cholesterol was dangerously high)

What really grips my shit about the gym is the people that go and do not push themselves.

I mean people that go to classes and do not give it their all. Classes should not become easier over time. If they are, you are not pushing hard enough.

I am just venting this morning. People that go to the gym to socialise, chat, use social media or watch tv as they run. Get off the machine or out of the way. You are wasting your time and filling up gym space.

The women that do body combat and barely punch the bag. Go home. Have a chat with yourselves and come back with the right attitude.

Arghhhhhhh

When I was a personal trainer, people with your attitude used to really piss me off.

Spend time concentrating on what YOU are doing rathe than everyone else. Assume that everyone else is doing what they need to do in order to meet THEIR goals.

You are not the judge of how hard someone is working. You know NOTHING about their lives. YOU are one of the reasons that many people are put off going to the gym because of your shitty, judgemental attitude.

"Best results for losing weight quick is 2mins intense fitness (pushing yourself) followed by 1 min of going easy (deep breathing/ stretches) repeat this 7/8 times and your body will continue to burn fat throughout the day. "

This was on a TV programme the other day.

Apparently if you train like this your metabolism speeds up for up to 24 hours. If you run, cycle etc for 20 minutes your metabolism is back to normal after about 2 hours...

Hope it works, I am starting back in the gym today after 7 months off....

"What really grips my shit about the gym is the people that go and do not push themselves.

That would be awesome then. More space for people that actually want to work hard. I have no issue with people working to their goals. Are you saying you would be happy with clients just going through the motions and not pushing their body to the max? You enjoy watching people put 40% effort?

The women that do body combat and barely punch the bag. Go home. Have a chat with yourselves and come back with the right attitude.

Arghhhhhhh

When I was a personal trainer, people with your attitude used to really piss me off.

Spend time concentrating on what YOU are doing rathe than everyone else. Assume that everyone else is doing what they need to do in order to meet THEIR goals.

You are not the judge of how hard someone is working. You know NOTHING about their lives. YOU are one of the reasons that many people are put off going to the gym because of your shitty, judgemental attitude."

I kind of get what you are saying. When I go to the her email gym I sweat my tits off. I don't feel like I've done it right if i don't. On fact I broke a phone once with water damage as i kept it in my bra and the sweat got in!

When I see people with full on make up and no hair out of place I just wonder why they pay to go. They could just go for a walk somewhere.

I get that for some that will be a lot of effort for them and it's right that we don't know their story So perhaps we shouldn't be quick to judg, just get on with our workout.

Agreed. Especially for the first few visits if you haven't done anything like it before it can be very daunting. I normally say to people just go and don't worry because everyone is generally very friendly and will help you if you ask but apparently not everyone!!

Also how can you blindly judge what 40% effort is? How do you know that person hasn't done a full days work and been up half the night or more with a teething baby or an ill child?

How do you know that person isn't suffering from anxiety? Or depression? That they're focusing on their phone as a friend is talking them out of a panic attack? How do you know that someone isnt under immense pressure whether it's a relative being diagnosed with cancer or an impending custody court Hearing?

Myself and my best friend have been through all of these. I still regularly go to the gym and will fully admit some days I put in less than 100%

So maybe the next time you see someone and they're not putting in 100% as you put it maybe have a little compassion and recognise for some people just getting to the gym and exercising is an achievement.

I agree with kgirl

99% of the effort is actually getting off your backside and going to the gym

even if you're having an off day, the fact that you're there shows commitment, and you're more likely to feel better for having gone

My point is, you don't know what 40% effort is.

I am an ex GB sportswoman and a regional champion in another sport. Compared to how I used to train, I am at perhaps 20% of my max effort.

Why? Because I have a long term injury from a car accident.

How would you know? Would you just assume that because I'm not sweating then I shouldn't be there? When actually, being at the gym is more important to my health than it probably is to yours. Someone said something almost identical to your statement to me when I was at the gym a few months ago. Told me to get off the leg press because I was only lifting 'pussy' amounts of weight. It's true, I wasn't lifting much. However I was activating my inner and outer quad in a controlled manner in order to help repair the main central section that I ripped in half. He wanted the machine to make himself look good. I was doing it so that I can walk comfortably.

I used to have a client who didn't put in 100% effort. She used to come to the gym, spend time with me socially while we went through the motions of doing a workout. She didn't put 100% effort in. You know why she used to come to me? Because her husband was beating her and controlling her social life and it was a way that she could get out of the house to be away from him, with company that wouldn't judge her or pressure her to leave. Imagine if she felt she was being judged about being at the gym, about being told she was wasting someones space?

Being judgemental about the reasons people do sport is shit. Not everyone wants to put 100% in. Not everyone needs to put a 100% in. I am an art history student. Should I mock and judge people who don't read 17 journal articles on a painting before they go and see it, because they've not put 100% effort in to what they do? No. I shouldn't. Because it's absolutely none of my fucking business.

Well said. By the way I did Art History at Manchester University. Hope you are enjoying your course.

I am an ex international athlete too for what it is worth. Also coached at GB junior level.

I do not point and laugh or stare and belittle anybody going to the gym. My point is if you go, give 100%. How can you tell? You can tell by looking to see if the grit and desire is there. A poster earlier said they were an athlete. Well, from athlete to athlete you just know if a person is giving 100%. If you are injured or re-training then you are giving 100% of what you can give. It is the slackers, the social media bunnies, the make-up dolls. If you are a first timer you still push 100%. If that means only running for 2 mins before your legs/lungs pack in then so be it. Next time show detetmination and try and make 3 minutes.

To the former international athlete above: you would not have achieved what you had by only giving 40% each time. It has to be 100 or nothing. If you did not give 100 then imagine how much better/more you could have been/achieved.

Training is different for everyone but must of weight lost/gain is down to eating. Eat right and train right. Lose weight eat 5/6 times aday but tiny meals and to gain make the meals bigger. When I want to trim up is chicken and rice all day. Boring but you can add sauces. I eat 1 chicken breast and 125grms of rice 5/6 times aday eating every 2/2 and a half hrs. Hope this helps
