Black Box Insurance

Has anyone got any opinions (good or bad) on black box insurance for a youngster? Who's the best or who should I miss?

I think it's a great idea for new/young drivers as its stops them from driving like bellends are falling into a habit of learned behaviour.

There are restrictions on mileage, times of driving, manner of driving, speed (within law) and such like.

If you're a good driver you reap the rewards, drive like a bellend you suffer financially.

I work with a young guy, aged 18. He bought his first car for just under £1000 and was quoted over four times that to insure it. The only way to make having the car affordable was to fit a black box and bring his policy cost down to half of that. By his own admission, it has made him a much safer driver and he is glad that he has got it. He says that without it he is certain that he would have either killed himself or someone else by driving like an idiot. He intends to keep the black box longer than the original year he signed up for as it means that he gets reports every 14 days on how safe (or dangerous) his driving is

Insurance is a minefield for younger drivers....it really is crazy. Here's a couple of examples of my own experience.

Peugeot 207 S16, 1.6 120bhp paid £6000 for it - £2000 to insure (no modifications)

Honda Civic Ti, 1.8 140bhp paid £17,000 for it £1250 to insure (modifications declared) forced induction kit, exhaust mods, rear windows tinted 100%, plasti dipped bonnet and front number, £3000 audio system........

^ explain that

My brother who's 19 has a 1.9 Audi A3 105bhp and pays around £2300 with a black box.

Oh I also looked into gettin a VW polo 1.4 TSI - 180bhp, 0-60 under 7seconds and it was £700 to insure.

So many factors at play with insurance

I think it's one of the better ideas to have the black box and do believe that it should be compolsary for the first 1-2 years of driving. I drive for a living and it's all about self control and training over time.

Passing a test is one thing but actually getting out there on you're own is something else. If I see someone with a P on the car I am more likely to give them some slack when they make the odd mistake because they are still getting the driving skills sorted out and let's face it none of us are all that after passing the driving test no matter how good we think we are LoL.

Yes I know what you mean about insurance, 9 years no claims here but as a courier cost me around £2000 for insurance as concidered high risk

What I don't like about new drivers - they can pass with no motorway driving and then just get on one... Scary stuff!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I think Im going to have a lot of ringing around to do for quotes.

Im thinking that I'll get my son to take the Pass Plus also, because as has been mentioned, motorway driving, driving on ice etc is also scary stuff that you dont get taught.

Agreed! I am a firm believer that everyone should take a motorway lesson before they are allowed to use them.

My sister passed her test 4 months ago ans has not ventured near a motorway yet. Tbh she hasn't driven a lot since passing as she's been using my parents car. She's just bought her first car and is planning a motorway lesson in it soon

I think people should be taught how to drive and not how to pass a driving test.

When I learnt to drive if you failed you had to wait six months before you could apply for a second test, time that was re-introduced, Too many drivers re-test until they manage to scrape through without improving their driving.

If a person has learnt to drive driving on a motorway is no challenge.

They are the safest roads to drive on.

Perhaps I should add I have had a clean licence for over 45 years 30 of those was driving high mileage daily in trucks

I only passed my test last year (1 year no claims! Yay! Go me!). But I don't agree with the way car tests are done. I think they should be more like bike tests. Up to a certain size engine for a period of time, then another test for a higher powered car. Too many idiots driving around in expensive cars because mummy and daddy pay for them.

I bought a little 1.2, 15 year old Ford FIESTA for my first car. Cost me £300 to buy, £1100 to insure. I didn't have a motorway lesson, buy went out with my housemate who has been driving for 20+ years, and he guided me through Britain's largest car park. He also did the same when it snowed.

I agree they're safer to drive on and less risk of an accident - but somebody driving on one having only been driving legally without instruction for 2 mins, at high speed, showing off to his mates - very dangerous not only to themselves but to others.

Not only that but 9/10 it's other drivers you have to be cautious of.

I've never had an accident and would regard myself a safe driver but that's not stopped anybody nearly hitting me or driving like an idiot behind or in front.

That's not the best one, I pay £320 to insure a 2 litre Clio Sport with 170bhp. Got a quote last week for a BMW M3 with 420bhp and that was £349.

I could of saved £1500 on my insurance last year, but didn't, I have a car for freedom, not so I have to apply by mileage restrictions and restrictions on what time I can drive.

So I spent £3500 on insurance and I don't regret it one bit

Got an ingenium dynamics black box on my company car. I can log into their website to see how my driving is going. I get 85-90% efficiency on a daily basis. Ive been driving 13 yrs and it has helped make me safer

That was the issue for me. I learnt to drive because I had a new job that involved travelling if I wanted to further my career. I have no problem a black box monitoring my speed and driving (the fact that I lose my license if I get 6 speeding points in the first 2 years is enough to do that), it's the restrictions on when I can drive and how far.

But if you're a good driver anyway you'd have nothing to fear.

It's just an insurance company covering themselves and them knowing and working out how much they can trust you not to only damage your own car but others.

What more the savings on the following year are dramatic

You'd have been £1500 better off so more fool you really.

Some do it without a mileage and times clause.

Depends on the company and your age I'd imagine

Pass plus is a scam.

Take your kids out yourself in ice and snow. Most people have at least one standard lesson in those conditions as well.

As for motorway, what do you need to learn which isn't already taught on a dual carriage-way?

In Wales the Pass Plus is subsidised, therefore we only pay £20, instead of £140. ) £20 for the whole course is the price of 1 lesson...so its a win/win situation.

Most instructors cancel lessons in inclement weather for safety reasons, or at least they do around here.
