Just wondered if my son who is 12 is just going through teenage stages or if there's an issue with him. He is sleeping the clock around lately and the suggestion of going outside is like I've told him the most devastating news ever.

Is this a phase or should I be worried about his health?

"Hope not....but is it possible he is being bullied?"

We've a good understanding about bullying and he would definitely tell me. So I know it's not that though it was my first thought

It could be a typical teenager phase or I don't want to alarm you he could be getting bullied my oldest son didn't like going outside much when he was 12 years old like you said when mentioned going out side he wouldn't go out sleeping most of the holidays ( we found out he was scared incase he bumped into the bully ) it was only a few months later we found out he was getting bullied I really hope he isn't as its a horrible thing to go threw.Talk to him Fingers crossed its nothing x

Monitor his habits and general health without him knowing or being overbearing.

He just might be doing something during the night .. computer, phone, t.v etc.

It's pretty normal for them to want to sleep but never pass it off as that if you think it's excessive.

There can be other causes that should be caught early.

If he can get up for school/to meet mates or have good times then he's fine.

One of mine never budged but as soon as something interesting was going on they could get up and ready in a blink.

Personally, I would take him to the doctor asap. Excessive sleep can be indicative of depression, as well as mononucleosis and various other problems. Doctor and blood tests right away.

My son had a phase like this

So we had sleepover with a cpl of his good Mates over

It'll be hormones if there's no underlying other issue

But I'd take him to the GP just for a check up

For peace of mind and good luck

All the best people were teenagers once lol

I was a bit like that in my later teens....

I'd say though you'll probably get fifteen different answers on here....maybe talk to him when he seems open to a chat...maybe the docs but if I remember what i I was like at that age and i'd have been so vex if my mum had done that...be delicate if your taking that route....perhaps if there's a way to chat to a professional without dragging him along?

Beyond that I don't know, I've never had kids to deal with....one thing I'm fairly sure of is that it won't go on forever...as said above, he'll discover new interests and hobbies I'm sure.....

If it is just the sleep thing then yes I would guess it is the start of the teen years. Enjoy

But if may be worth keeping an eye on him for other changes in his behaviour, who know him better than his mother

Teenagers have brains under development that affects their sleep, so he's likely affected, with a body clock that's not aligned to the rest of us. Maybe rebellion against rigid standard school time schedules too. All normal as long as he's not under duress.

To be honest all I remember about being 12 was trying to find my big brothers Razzle stash to wank with. If I had the internet in 1985 I would have been up all night masturbating my fecking brains out. The urge is strong when youre 12.

My son has just emerged from a similar pattern. He is doing well, well adjusted and well liked even though he is quite introverted. For him it was simply he couldn't be arsed standing around Subway, wandering aimlessly around town in a gang and doing nothing. He would join them if they were specifically playing footy, otherwise he preferred to stay home, play and interact online, do some video editing and sleep as if he were training for the Somniacs World Championship. All that growing and hormonal chaos required a lot of sleep to recover from. He did not need to go to the Doctors but did need a loving ear from time to this me when he needed to chat about things.

Anyone who says the kid doesn't need to go to the doctor has never had a child diagnose with Hodgkins disease.

A half hour at the doctor's surgery for a check-up and blood tests costs nothing. And if nothing turns up, what the hell, attribute it to hormones, midnight wanking or video games.

My cousin ignored the fatigue and thought it was nothing. Her daughter is now dead. True story. And yes, not what would typically happen - but don't take the chance.

Not being able to drag their butt out of bed before 10am is teenage sleep pattern - sleeping 24/7 on the other hand, is not to be ignored.

As the mother of 3 lads,I'd have been concerned if one of them hadn't wanted to go outside for a period of time . . I'm presuming he has mates in the area. . Do they knock ? X

yeah he's a popular lad but we do live a fair distance from his mates but they do knock on for him and he'll force himself to go out and is happy once he's out.

I think it probably is puberty but will take him to see doc just to put my mind at ease.

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

My two girls (12 and 14) sleep between 13 and 15 hours when they visit me, the other hours you'd think they were still asleep. that could be my conversation skills though.

If you're concerned visit the medi quacks.

Filthy Fuckeryville

My son has turned 14 today and it's only cause he wanted his presents that he is out of bed before late lunchtime.

Invest in some tissues, moisturising lotion and maybe a new plastic bin with a lid (to contain the tissues n smell) as a sorry for dragging him to the docs as he won't appreciate it I'm sure. Last time I took mine to the doc with an ear infection he just grunted and i had to tell the doctor what was wrong with him!!

Casually tell him it's hayfever season for the tissues n bin and mention that the sun teamed with hormones can make your skin a bit dry.... Lol

(sorry it's a vision you don't need, but it's worse when you walk in on it - start knocking on his door too!)

Adjusting to the teenage body clock perhaps? Their sleep patterns are different to ours so may appear tired to us when we're at our liveliest. Just a thought and worth having a read up on.

All is normal with him according to doc, blood tests done to keep my mind at peace.

On the other hand I may need to invest in alcohol shares to survive this stage of his life.

Good luck. We tend to do things with the teenager in the evenings when he suddenly becomes talkative again for about half an hour before returning to his room and whatever happens in there.

It could be a range of things but his body will be going through many changes so it could be that.

I say trust your mothers intuition and never feel stupid for suggesting something. It is better to be safe and make sure he okay

Invest in twice as much food, tissues and a bin for his room. Explane to him that the air in his room will need changing too.

During adolescence the body releases a lot of human growth hormone to make us grow.. That also makes us sleepy as that is when this is released ...
