so the womens rights movement in the 70,80,and onwards made strides forward in equality .

What do people think were the gains and losses over this period ?

big topic, but as a gut response ..

gained..changes in legislation which support women both at work and in marriage ( or maybe more in separation ! ) ...but still areas where it doesnt work or go far enough.

lost .. the idea that women can be strong and compete equally at work etc, and still be proud to be women ; we're not trying to be men / masculine

feminism and femininity are not mutually exclusive x

I agree, love the idea of being treated as a woman, but want the freedom to be able to assert myself.

Also am willing to pay my own way and buy the next round lol

I'll get serious here for a moment.

I love the equal pay and equal rights stuff......

But.... I also love a bloke to hold the door open, to pay for everything, to look after me and to treat me like the little woman sometimes, so I don't have anything to worry about.

I've got alot of intelligence and qualifications coming out of my ears. Things that would not have been possible 60 years ago...... however, would I give it all up for the right man and be a good wife and stay at home and let him earn the money?

To bloody right I would!

Something that has got lost in the equality debate is when a man holds a door open for a woman or pushes her chair in for her he isn't doing to be in control; he's doing it to show how much he cares for her and in his own little way he's acting on his age old instinct to protect her.

I'm all in favour of women being treatly exactly the same as men in the eyes of the law but I also firmly believe that there are fundamental differences between the sexes that should not be eroded by equal rights issues.

Women are soft, warm, beautiful creatures and it's nice to be able to look after them without being deemed a control freak. It's even nicer when a woman recognises this and allows herself to be pampered.

Gosh, I've come over all lovey dovey today. Must be the warm weather making feel frisky lol

i love to be treated as a female and to recieve all that should go with being a female but as i work mainly in a mans world so to speak i prefer to be treated as one of the guys as i think it would be unfair on the other guys...

dont get me wrong showing one hell of a cleavage, wearing 6" heels and seams gets me alot but to be treated as an equal is a lot better i find, and yes in our happy team of workers which are 95% male im paid alot more than they are but i put it down to what i know and not sex i am...

This precisely why feminism is the unwieldy mass of contradiction that it is. It's why there is no real equality in the work place, why there are fewer women in positions that really count and why women will probably remain in the shadow of men for years to come.

It's the old cake and eat it conundrum, you want to be treated as an equal but also want to to be treated like a woman.

When you girls eventually sort out exactly what it is you want real progress can be made, until then you only have each other to blame for the situation lots of women find them selves in today

blimey tis is unusual for us but i think i agree )....Germaine Greer authoress of The Female Eunuch recently said a similar thing and said women had lost a lot of ground for having a foot in 2 camps ....but would love to hear the womens take on this ..

Im believe in equal pay for equal work and in my profession at least it is happening,yet men will maybe rise up the career ladder quicker simply because its the women take time out to raise families....no matter how much women want it all it does'nt always work and its bloody hard work!

I think the really strong feminists alienated themselves from men and women as they turned into scary harridens and made themselves unapproachable because people did'nt know what to say without offending them

Thats not to say the cause was'nt worth fighting for though

But where is the equality in that? This is the precisely the dilemma that faces men and women on a daily basis.

I am 51 so for me holding the door open etc is simply second nature. If I held the door for most of the ladies on here I would be considered polite and a gentleman, however some women would see me as an extremely rude dinosaur as they are more than capable of opening their own bloody doors.

Conversely most of you girls would be thinking ignorant git if the young man in front of you simply lets the door swing closed in your face. He's nothing of the sort as he is actually paying respect to your demands for equality which some women would silently thank him for.

You cannot expect to be treated as an equal if you also expect to treated like a lady, you either open your own doors etc or accept that guys will always have the upper hand.

That's happened to me but in reverse..

I was going into a pub and a coloured lady entered just before me. I was far enough behind her for her to look back and when she saw it was me she deliberately let go of the door so that when it swung back I had to put my hand out to stop it hitting me in the face.

I continued in and when I got to the bar I asked her why she let go and her reply was that I was outside of her social group and therefore saw no benefit to hold the door open for me and decided to let go of it.

I was once stood on the tube with two young ladies in front of me going on about how they hated men opening doors for them, when at the next station a seat came free and a guy sat in it before one of the ladies could, she said in a loud voice "a gentleman would give his seat up to a lady". Us poor guys just cannot win!

Its common courtesy to hold doors open....I do it myself as well...I did'nt say it was anything to do with equality

How does it mean that if I open my own doors,I could be a long time at a door if I waited for a man! that men have the upper hand?

Why does it have to be about one sex having the upper hand over another

I treat people as I wish to be treated and it has nothing to do with feminism

I do the same job as a man..I expect the same pay as him...again nothing to do with feminism just fairness...if it was the other way round I don't expect the men to put up with it either

I wouldn't have been able to stop myself saying something cutting to them, cheeky buggers!!

Once had a woman moan at me on a bus for not getting up and letting her sit down. She had a right pop at me so I asked her how much she paid for her fare, she said £1.20 and I replied, "same as me now fuck off!" to the merriment of everyone else on the bus who laughed hehehe.

The ironic thing is that I was about to give up my seat just as she started bitching so I thought fuck you and remained sitting instead.
