"Don't people have anything better to do with their time than shop? And more to the point, don't retail workers deserve some time to spend with their families too! I used to work in a supermarket and the reason I chose a different career path rather than retail management was because of the lack of time off around Christmas and easter" I was actually thinking the same thing...

"Easter Sunday is about the only day in the year when virtually all shops are not allowed to open . Why ? , and anyone know any that are ? " . Easter is a religious day , in any event shops are open for enough days already without also being open on both Easter and Xmas days. Would being open on these days serve any meaningfull purpose ?Or does this just incur additional staff costs and no extra sales overall.

"I just think it's utter madness. Went into an Asda and they had completely sold out of Easter eggs... " Well let's face it, hollow egg shaped chocolate is essential to life and it's not likely that anyone could survive without chocolate for the one day the shops are closed for...

Perhaps I'd understand if the had sold out in January.

" Wikipedia says its the only celebration that changes and that's because: 'Easter and the holidays that are related to it are moveable feasts in that they do not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars which follow the only cycle of the sun; rather, its date is determined on a lunisolar calendar similar to the Hebrew calendar.'

" The earliest believers in the church wished to keep the observance of Easter in correlation to the Jewish Passover. Because the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ happened after the Passover, they wanted Easter to always be celebrated subsequent to the Passover. And, since the Jewish holiday calendar is based on solar and lunar cycles, each feast day is movable, with dates shifting from year to year.

Technically the UK still is. Although I see far less religious tolerance for being Christian displayed here now.
