I'll start with U2 - anyone think any other band has ever been more overated?

hard to top U2 IMO but I'll offer:

1. Queen

2. Genesis (post Gabriel)

3. Pink Floyd (post Barrett)

in no particular order

I like U2, would agree Bono can be a bit of an arse, but music wise they have done some really good stuff and also written some great tunes for others. Good live as well.

I find over rated difficult to define, I either like stuff or I don't.

I remember reading an article by a music journo where described being round Mark E. Smith's house when the famous South Bank Show episode profiling The Smiths came on the telly. He described the experience as "like sitting down with Elvis to watch a documentary on Shakin' Stevens"...

You know it though .

How does that Eleanor Rigby one go, or In my Life, While my guitar gently weeps.

For every song they recorded like Yellow Submarine I could name ten classics, but I won't, because it's all about personal taste. You don't like them, fair enough.

Beatles, Oasis, U2, The Smiths.

To be fair though at least there's a fair bit of endearing stuff the Beatles came out with, the other three though are utter, utter pretentious shit, only assumed to be good because a handful of over influential, elitist music rags say there are, I can't understand how anyone can hear any sound come out of Morriseys mouth that doesn't sound like some self pitying twat with a thumb up his arse, U2 haven't produced anything worth listening to in over twenty years (and even their better stuff is tainted by the fact that its, ugh - HIM singing!) and its impossible to think of anything at all related to the Gallagher brothers without picturing the pair of them being gunned down in super slow motion - mind though, my opinion of Noel improved when I heard he thinks Kanye West is a twat, but then again similarly Kanye West would go up in my estimation if he called Noel Gallagher a twat too.

And...breath.

I'd say that rather judgemental. All it really displays is people's differing musical tastes.

Actually finding this hugely amusing that every single one of my favourite bands and artists that I listen to daily are on this list

Pink floyd,

Oasis (pre-1999)

ColdPlay (old stuff)

The Verve

The Cure

Rolling Stones

The Smiths

Just need Slipknot, Linkin Park and Bob Marley to join the list and we have a full house of my ipods playlist haha

Oh, and how could I leave out the Libertines, oh god the FUCKING Libertines and Pete FUCKING Doherty!

Seriously, if you were to write a thesis on the evidence of, and set out to categorically prove that art and youth culture was going in an objectively negative direction, you could build a weighty argument around the fact that such a group was ever deemed to be 'good/cool/talented' or viewed in any kind of positive fashion. I'm not sure I could even refer any of the sounds that came out of the instruments they attempted to 'play' as 'music', the words they committed to paper as 'lyrics', or the sounds coming out of Dohertys mouth as 'singing' as that would suggest that SOME degree of artistry or talent was somehow present during their time as a group.

If you wanted to make an argument for the absolute WORST band of all time, the Libertines would be in with a very good chance of winning - although ideally I'd want them to place second, as they were so utterly shit that they don't even deserve to win a competition for being shit.

"Doesn't qualify purely purely because he is a solo act but I cannot believe anyone would like Dylan, or Tom Waits and Mark E Smith obviously

Ooh! they are so poetic, but they can't bloody sing. Point proved when someone else plays their songs and makes them famous. Mark E Smith excluded only John Peel bought his songs even he wouldn't sing them.

Mark E Smith is the biggest cock in music.

Surely Axl Rose should win this trophy? Had it then lost it. Exhibit A fans being made to wait 3 hours on a Sunday night. Exhibit B Chinese Democracy. Exhibit C Ginger balding dreadlocks.

His true fans love him n stand by him thr thick n thin n that includes his hair n btw he has long hair again now he ditched his dreads about seven years ago I personally loved em xx Actually I like Axl and saw him live a couple of years ago. I am not a fan of his notorious lateness but I like his voice. "

I've seen the libertines a couple of times , Babyshambles a few times and Doherty solo loads of times. I wasn't really a fan but I had to accompany my son as he was underage.

I think they stood out against a pile of mediocre R&B and pop shit that kids were listening to at the time. They wrote their own songs and played their own instruments and played some stonking Rock n Roll songs. He had stage presence and at least they could play live.

At the top of the over rated list would have to be Take That - but boy or girl band whom play no instruments would have to be right up there with them; they are really just backing singers backing each other, after all!

Some of these bands listed here love them or hate them created some of the best music this world has heard, some more than others, but as averages go they had to have there downfalls aswell, for eg, the beatles loved by millions, probably one of the best bands to grace the planet, but also made some songs to forget, oasis, 2 of the biggest knobs as leads, but again some great music, u2 a massive knob as lead, but some great music, I could go on, it seems everyone will defend there favourite bands and say that every other one was overated.

I know quite a few have said the Beatles are/were over rated, but c'mon the fact that were still talking about them and it's been 45 YEARS since the last recorded together (and were all still alive) proves there longevity, ok they had a few iffy songs.

We'll see if people are talking about "1 direction" in 45 years.

replying to both at once lol, you can just see people getting wound up though cant you, thoughts of "how dare they say the beatles are overated" or oasis or u2 etc, the truth is none of them are, all of sold out multiple concerts, millions of records, made all that money, and were/are successful, the truth is both gallagher brothers are absolute bellends and cunts, but they produce mostly excellent music, bono is a grade a cunt, but u2 also produced some excellant music and all those millions of people that bought and still buy the beatles music today are the proof of fact they arent overated, but all it is that not everyones music is everyones cup of tea, but not everyone can just simply accept that.
