The recovery is still so fragile...?

Watching the news this morning and they had a story about a woman who had a disabled son but her employers refused to recongise her as his registered carer and give her the felxible working hours she needed to care for him, but other workers without sick children were allowed flexi hours and/or given pay rises and promotions. The European Court of Human Rights declared she had been discriminated against. Now new legislation is comes into effect today in the shape of the New Equality Act that dictates that employers will have to make themselves ready for disability claims by employees who care for people other than themselves.

But.... Abigail Morris of The Chamber of Commerce says that the £190m that will be spent just getting businesses to understand the legislation could be better spent creating jobs WHEN THE RECOVERY IS STILL SO FRAGILE.

... What would she say if the economy was booming and this legislation came into effect?

Why do many people trot out the same line regarding the recovery when the cycle of boom and bust is known to be transient, yet the laws that govern us are for the long term good and impervious to economic cycles?

i can't remember the last boom so hard to compare!

however, i do feel a bit like a patronised child when they make a display of shaving the odd tens of thousands of the budget here and there, playing a fanfare with a "look, we are, we are" tone to their voice whilst ridiculous monies are being spent elsewhere on beaurocracy and policies which add hundreds of thousands on to the economy daily, that don't work and serve as nothing other than a method of slowing down the system.

the savings equate to nothing in the big scheme of things, there seems to be an attitude of "well, one penny might not seem much, but if you collect enough of them...."

Talk of a recovery is a joke, imho, and if I understand things correctly.

I get the impression that people think we've been in the bad times and are now heading out of them. Well........ it actually starts this month, THE CUTS! And of course, cuts usually mean redundancies! And then the unions are lining up to call strike after strike!

If you think this is all just doom and gloom then I'm happy to be corrected, but I prefer to live in the real world!

On the contrary, I think you're bang on the momey there. The hurt hasn't even begun yet and I hope Ed Miligan reigns in the unions who voted him in as leader because mass strikes are precisely what we don't need right now.

Cameron said it wouldn't be easy before the election and it won't, so all this talk of damaging a fragile recovery is sound bites to force one's viewpoints on another. We KNOW it's fragile, but we can't have equality laws passed only in the good times, as they affect people being discrimintaed against whether times are good or bad.

The Ops point is a good one. Just like economies any individual business has highs and lows. Should that be an excuse for them to not insure their cars? Not to pay taxes? The laws we live under are longterm for the greater good and based on justice, they should not be guided by what's sat or not sat in the bank account! These commentators do themselves no favours when they constantly try to hide behind the threat of a double dip to stop us doing the right thing.

central scotland

Interesting to hear about all the coming cuts while (as seen on tv last week)there are already plans afoot by the COLLUSION government for the profits from the public funded bailout and I dont know the exact figures but its in the billions.

Unbelievably what the plans are are for the money to be used to help the city in other words give it to the guys who fucked everything up in the first place and who happen to be the only ones who dont appear to be paying for the fuck up anyway.

What a caring government this is going to be, as wecan see they are there for ALL the people including us ordinary hard working folk MY F*****g A**e
