"If you can, take your break close to 3.30 and go outside for some fresh air. Walk around and get some big deep breaths. " I cant take a break whenever, i guess u could say im on my own so breaks are not an issue. I hate these nites. Thankfully they only come round once every few weeks.

"I usually work nights and can hit the wall around that time, it's the killer time for most people. Try eating a couple of bananas throughout the night or fresh orange juice, nothing too sugary or too much caffeine or it'll send you up but then you'll crash down." I try not to have coffee as i will need to go home and sleep. Will try the banana idea tho thanks.

"The long and the short of it is.... Some people find it easier to sleep than others.. I'm a "struggle to sleep type of person" Every now and then i take a a sleeping aid tablet called "sominex" You can buy it in Tesco's or Sainsbury's.......it's really good and you don't need to go to the Doc !!" And addictive. I would like to suggest something pure and herbal but it is illegal so I will refrain.

I do enjoy my job though, over 4 thousand men behind bars and they all have to listen to me, not that they do mind!

"Ivs done shiftwork for years 3am-4am is the twilight zone. Sleep for a couple of hours the afternoon before you start nights and don't take breaks around that time. Stay active then. There is no easy way, you just have to break your body clock. Stay off of caffiene, sugar or energy drinks or you won't sleep when you get home and you will feel even worse the following night and then it just rolls on and on. Until it takes you a week to recover. Hope that helps you Xxx" Thanks. My main problem is i only do one every few weeks. So for one nite it has a knock on effect for a few days while my body gets back to normal.

Yup, people think caffeine will keep you awake, in fact it gives you a boost for about 20 minutes then your sugar levels drop making you feel tired. Best bet is cut out caffeine all together and try eating "long chain "carbs. Bread, cereals etc not sugary foods. These raise energy levels for a longer time. All these help but unfortunately 3-4am is a natural time for most people to flag a little. The only real help is if you can manage a power nap on a break. 20 minutes can work wonders. (Lessons learned from 20 years of shift work lol)

"I do a lot of nights too... It's all in the preparation and being in a routine... And your diet... If you maybe post up your routine, shift times and sleep pattern it might be easier for someone in a similar situation to give advice... One thing I'll say though, black out curtains and a good sleep is key...because it's unnatural to sleep in the day for a person, the quality of sleep had to be good if not no matter how much of it you've had you'll still be tired at night... Between 3 and 5 are always the worst hours on nightshift..." I think thats the problem.....i dont have a routine, i flit between 12, 14 hour shifts with the odd nite thrown in once every few weeks. Im a rubbish sleeper at the best of times but the nites seem to take me a few days to recover from!
