It appears that it will be illegal to pay for sex in Northern Ireland after June. Seems a backward step to me...

What are your thoughts?

Very true...how on earth are they going to police it...surely it's better to concentrate policing on other issues...as long as both parties understand the arrangement and a re willing participants...will just drive the coercive violence underground IMHO.

It is a crime in this country to coerce someone in that manner already.

You could call for a ban on the sale of glue on the basis that a minority of folk sniff it.

If somebody is made to do anything unwillingly then that shouldn't be allowed - and there are laws in place to deal with this..no new laws required?

What is the rationale behind it the new law, does anyone know?

Good point...surely their motive for this move is to deter prostitution alltogether? Although admittedly it will just drive it underground.

Unfortunately, the current tendency in political circles seems to be to protect the minority of vulnerable people at the expense of the majority. Certainly, some prostitutes are exploited. Some use it as a means of fuelling a drug habit. I suspect that the majority are more than happy with their chosen profession, as are their clients. The unhappy ones can in most instances choose to exercise personal responsibility.

. How will thus prevent trafficking? . Those involved in trafficking are hardly going to stop just because it is illegal. It might be better to make it legal but ensure that those providing these services are registered to pay tax .

There is always a minority forced to do things without the freewill of their own mind - prostitution is hard to police anyway as the majority will argue clients are paying for their time and not paying for sex.

I think making it legal and a taxable form of work would deter folk forcing others into it

It will happen whatever the legalities, so I would legalise, regulate, tax and try and eradicate the slavery, abuse, violence etc.

They only prosecute the buyer and not the seller though. I kind of like this, for one reason.

All the dicks who rip off sex workers because they think the worker won't go to the police because they think the worker will be worried about getting into trouble for selling sex are now the guilty ones from the offset.

Not really thought of anything else yet, am sure there are loads of negatives to it. Especially where dodgy workers are concerned.

Sorry but couldn't disagree more! Make it illegal and these pimps/gang masters have an extra weapon with which to control these women - fear of arrest and prosecution if they seek help!

By far the best thing to do imho is to have state controlled brothels. Get these ladies off the streets away from pimps and drugs and the danger to them and their clients of violence, theft etc - and let them work in clean, safe spaces where they are given regular health/std checks, drug and dietary advice- and counselling/ help and advice on alternatives to prostitution should they want it!

Criminalising prostitution is a huge step backwards. Xx

Our leaders are stupid, pandering to the moral crusaders, influenced by religious types etc.

It's unworkable and the unintended consequences are wrong and worse. Please just let adults do whatever they wish to consent to, where no-one is harmed etc. There are already laws for trafficing etc.

Some smug gits will feel they've helped society, not caring about the effects that may be negative.

Everything that is sent underground, whether drugs or sex work, is the worse for it.

They're only criminalising the buyers of sex and not the workers.

Sex is a pretty personal thing anyway, anyone can do covert things when they are naturally hidden by society.

I think this is the reason why it's still technically illegal, because once it's legal things like taxing it and proving tax fraud will be impossible. Because this type of work ensures it can be done privately and there will be all kinds of ways of getting around taxation. And people like sex and money, if they can get round taxes and have sex in the process then they probably will.

And once a whole part of our society gets around paying taxes, everyone else will want into that and start figuring out ways of making their businesses more covert and avoid paying taxes too.

We might even end up with a stateless society that works for itself and it's people and not rely on rich people to run it for us, omg they will lose their power and most of their financing.

Only took me 41 years of life to figure that out. A bit slow i am.
