Me and john know nothing about first cars our son is having lessons now started un but saying he would like a car when he pass .... What sort should i be looking at under 5000 Pounds. And whats cheep to run and stuff .. I have not a clue x JO XXXX

Budgies are cheep to run.

Insurance will cost half of what your budget is for a young driver.

You need to be aiming for something along the Fiesta/Corsa line. Steer clear of anything Peugeot, Renault etc as they're expensive to run and the insurance will bump up because they're popular with young lads for racing and adapting. Not that your son will do, but others have so they have a bad name! Ford or Vauxhall will be economical on the petrol and parts aren't overly priced as they're made in the UK.

we have a cheap to run car for sale. Proton Savy Street on an 06 plate very good about town and 0 - 60 in about 3 hrs so pretty safe too. MOT for 10 months. Let us know if you are interested as has to go soon.

It will also reduce his number of friends by half too.

Fiesta/Corse esque cars, maybe a Suzuki swift. Something with as small an engine as is practicable. Not only will insurance be less but running costs too. Petrol, road tax etc.

We had a corsa on a 53 plate and looked at insurance for our 17 yr old who recently passed his test - 4k!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Investigated further -and eventually got a Landy Discovery 2.5 turbo diesel engine, put him on my van insurance as a 2nd driver £800 with full no claims.

Can anyone explain the logic in that????

thats insane!

ive got my driving test next month and am looking for a car, i cringe looking at car insurance just now lol grr!

Both my son and daughter got a corsa when they passed, first year insurance will still be high, but it will come right down for the 2nd yr....

Both mine put each other on their insurances and it brought them both down...both down to about 800 each for first 10 months!

If other drivers at home, add them x

These days £5000 will actually get you a brand new car or well on the way to a nice little first car, ok many people talk about new car depreciation but there are a lot of good points too, keep it long enough and the depreciation will not even matter.

New car deals are good at the moment, many include servicing, AA/RAC memberships, lots of toys on board like blue tooth docking, CD player, sat nav etc, the kinda things young lads like and how impressed will his friends be with his 10 plate.

New cars are usually better on fuel consumption too, talk finance to the dealer then switch to cash at the last minute when you have his best price.

If you do go along the 2nd hand route I personally would go to a dealer, again some great deals to be had on the forecourts at the moment, remember cash doesn't talk, they make money on finance so don't dismiss it to get the best deal, you may even find a finance deal with low penalty points for early payment, if you do that get an "agreement termination" price off the financiers then pay almost a large chunk of it (about 1/2 to 2/3rds) then ask them again for a termination price, this will save you some money.

Dealers are offering good servicing packages and warranties at the moment on new and used cars.

If you want a good deal on a Renault Megane Convertible, 3 yrs old and 4600 miles on the clock, 1 owner since new at well below book price I know where there is one (not me selling it) lol

well jed thankyou for that i sall look into all this ... never was thinking about new car .. but will look at whats around just like to think its safe and easy to drive and cheep to run ... he never asks alot my son so be nice to have him a safe little run around xx thankyou

I bought my last car from there. Was happy with service I got. Most of their cars come with 12 month warranty also.

Quite right, quite right the C1 or Peugeot 107 are about the cheapest to insure as they have lots of plastic and easy change body parts. And low tax as well as a good resale value.

a corsa,a fiesta,a saxo,c1/2 are all pretty reliable,cheap to insure and plenty of parts available for any mis-haps.

look for something with low emmisions. i know its not in your price range or somthing your son would want but for eg. The new ford KA is free tax for the year x
