Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Some smokers don't seem to mind sharing their passive smoke with their children and others. Now that there has been a story about a pet dog dying from lung cancer caused by passive cigarette smoke will that message get through to the smokers?

I smoke, but like to think I'm a considerate smoker. I go outside even at my own house.

I know a couple who smoke in a room where their dog lives, with the door shut all the time. I'm talking about 50 a day between them, and not just normal cigarettes. Felt so sorry for their little doggy

You can't tell what causes lung cancer in humans how can they possabily know the cancer in the dog was caused by passive smoking

I'm guessing the owner smokes so they are just assuming this is what caused it

Not at all I work with cancer patients every working day of my life, its got nothing to do with me smoking, I just know my job, there is no way of knowing what causes cancer, lung cancer is lung cancer be you a smoker or not the strain of cancer is the same there isn't two types of lung cancer for smokers and none smokers

Are you saying the medical profession has been lying to us these past decades and my guilt free smoking without inflicting on others is doing me no potential harm?

Thinking it about it you may have a point. If, as they say, every cigarette shortens your life span, I should have died 103 years before my birth.

There is, however, a link with smoking and the incidence of lung cancer. The warnings are there for all to see. If passive smoking damage is possible for humans why not for pets?

There is, however, a link with smoking and the incidence of lung cancer. The warnings are there for all to see. If passive smoking damage is possible for humans why not for pets?

Of course there is a link, we all have the potential to gain cancer, we all have dormant cancer cells, just some of us will go through life without the cells mutating

Smoking can speed up the mutation of the cells, that does not mean it will, some people smoke all their life and never get lung cancer while some none smokers do get lung cancer

I'm not saying for a moment passive smoking can not cause the mutation of cancer cells I'm just saying if someone does get lung cancer there is no way of knowing what cause it

You can't say that because a dog that dies of lung cancer who lives with owners that smoke the passive smoking caused the cancer because there is simply no way of knowing that

Lots of Birds.. Naturally Feed on Tobacco Plants in the Wild..

The Damage they do to Tobacco Crops is quite large..

I understand what NN means. The only specific cancer is mesothelioma caused by asbestos, but smoking and asbestos are symbiotic and almost certainly give you camcer.

With the amount of chemicals put in dog food/treats that cause bad health in peoples pets, maybe that would be another place these people should look.

Kibble and tinned meats are awful for our pets, vets recommend, endorse and sell the stuff.

But hey, they then get to treat our pets!

There's some bizarre logic on this thread. Just because there's no direct evidence that that dog's lung cancer was caused by cigarette smoke inhalation doesn't mean that it wasn't. I don't smoke. I've still got a 1 in 2 chance of getting cancer over my lifetime - that doesn't mean that the smoking leads to cancer message is wrong and I should start smoking

Knowing a lot of non-smokers with cancer doesn't mean smoking doesn't increase someone's chances of developing cancer.

I've wondered about this one in relation to pets before - if the effect of the carcinogens in cigarette smoke on human cells is to act one way, then it could well be the same for an animal's cells. However anyone who won't stop for themselves or even for the sake of other human beings who live in proximity to them probably isn't going to stop for a cat or dog either.

Looks like we are heading into the overweight versus smoking health issues with our pets.

There has been lots of information about the effects of over feeding dogs/cats recently.

Non smokers and smokers know the health risks with over feeding their pets, I can't see many changing their ways by stopping their habit of allowing their animals to over eat.

Let's not forget, these over feeding pet owners are actually making the effort to over feed these pets!

Hello all,

here was an extensive survey carried out in California to prove the link between passive smoking and lung cancer. This was sponsored by anti smoking associations. The two scientists were confident that they could prove it but were confounded when their research proved otherwise, passive smoking does not accelerate or promote lung cancer in humans. I don't believe they tried dogs.

Incidentally their funding was then stopped by the original sponsors.

Overweight pets suffer from medical conditions too, normally by people that rarely exercise them and show their love by stuffing them with 'treats'

According to current information we have a nation of fat pets, I was pointing out that we are all responsible for our pets wellbeing, whether we smoke or not.

Yes we are. My cats aren't overweight and I don't smoke either. That's completely irrelevant to this thread. I didn't see the OP as a dig at smokers. But I'm not a smoker so maybe I'm less prone to overreaction and touchiness
