If it was something genetic or hereditary then yes

Preventative screening for certain conditions yes

For others things no,I think I would spend far too long worrying about something that might not happen,I feel it would affect my life too much and stop me from actually living it

If it was something that could be treated/preventative action taken to help stop me developing that condition then absolutely yes.

If it was just knowing for the sake of knowing, I'm not quite as sure.

Yes if they were for something that could be treated. If not then I would rather not know and prefer not to be offered the test. As I don't have children, and its now too late, I wouldn't be concerned that I would be passing on something genetic or hereditary.

As said above if anything could be done to save me and it never return.

Personal/family reasons too.

I'd just want to know for my piece of mind too (may not be peaceful, but would rather know)

I was recently tested and discovered I have Alzheimers and Ebola.

Nope.

Given my line of work and the fact I've been dead twice already I live every day as it comes. I try not to worry about what's round the corner because I might not get there anyway.

If it was an illness where early detection would help extend my life by prevention/intervention /cure then yes I would take all the necessary tests.

Otherwise I'd rather just be left alone to get on with my life, however long or short it maybe!

Yes, absolutely I would want to know - for one to look at preventive measures but also to take some control over my life and the effect it might have on my family.

To answer the question OP

if there were hereditary type disease in my family and taking a test would mean i could then get treatment to prevent it then yes definately.

I wouldn't want to know, it would change your life instantly and the suffering could go on for a lot longer than necessary . I would rather find out much later then my family & myself suffers less

I was discussing this with a work colleague re: dementia just after Terry Pratchett passed away and I said if I felt my memory was going I would ask to be tested so that (a) I could take advantage of any drugs available to prolong my decline and (b) stock up on drugs I could OD on when I felt it was starting to run away with me...with regards to genetic issues, I would also want to find out so I could try gene therapy or consider therapeutic removal of the potentially affected bits a la Angelina Jolie

Even if it was something treatable that would cause major illness and possibly death if not found as soon as possible?

Mine was treatable, life changing but treatable. It's not been fun and has taken a lot longer than I ever thought. However, I have watched family members die from this. I know which suffering is easier to bear.

I have been tested for lots of things. I have a range of things but not bad enough to kill me - just make me ill/in pain/wobbly. I decided towards the end of last year to stop going for my monthly blood test as I don't want them to tell me that they have found something and nothing. I haven't been for my annual MRI either.

I get checked for STIs and I get my boobs squashed regularly in the machine that is too high up to be comfortable for me. I have had my cervix, tubes and ovaries removed as a preventative measure.

I am now operating on the basis that if I feel well then I am well.

The only thing I would worry about is something neurological like Alzheimer's. I'd like to catch that early so I could top myself whilst I'm capable of doing so.

I loath the thought of my love ones devoting their lives to my care if I'm incapable of looking after myself.
