Check motorpoint - for around £10k you can get a nearly new (13 plate) golf or focus easily! Most are ex lease/rentals with full history.

I bought a £21k vectors there a few years back that was 11 mths old for £9k !

Kia C'eeds are actually pretty good, and for £10k you'll get an almost new one.

Buy mid April.. Wait for the 15 plate rush to die down. There will be more second hand cars traded in, esp ex notability only 3 years old..

Hyundai, you will get something pretty decent spec for £10k and my mechanic swears by them. Test drove a couple and was suitably impressed.

Central

I've had both foci and golfs and prefer the latter. Much better fuel economy, power and reliability.

Get a Porsche Boxster you'll pick up an early 2.7 for 10k or you could have BMW M3

Audi A3..Golf Tdi...BMW 3 series aren't that big...I do like the new a-class mercs but they're probably out the 10k price range.

Speaking of which, whatever you decide to get, it ought to be decent with that sort of budget.

Enjoy!

Get a bigger car, you get much more respect on the road, I get let out at every junction in my e270.

I'd get a C class or a 3 series diesel

I used to have one and loved it. Just smiling thinking it's a Wankel engine ! Sounds very fab like.

Seat Leon - same engine as a Golf for a lower budget. The FR is lovely to drive.

An Alfa Romeo or Audi would be on my list. My friend has a just got an Audi Q3 - what a car!

Volvo C30 1.6 edrive £0 tax, 10 sec 0-60, 70mpg

or,

the slightly larger V40 diesel has £0 road tax 11 sec 0-60, 70mpg?

Alternative looking car I think

Pick up a decent 09/10 plate 318/320 for that, with the added benefit of the engine being the right way round.
