Cook to survive, or cook because you love it?

I belong to the latter camp - I love cooking! I find it extremely satisfying eating some delicious that I have cooked myself!

Having yummy mushroom risotto at the mo, a dish that my ex-hubby miss the most!

Cooking and eating is so much more than digesting calories for survival - I am with you on that one hundred percent, which is why I spend extra time in the gym

It is an art, a hobby, a philosophy - all in one and it can bring such pleasure through colour, flavour, presentation and last but not least appreciative guests

To survive, left home with no idea about cooking, never really got into it as i felt embarrassed about asking shop staff how to cook stuff, lived on chips from the chippy till i decided to try new things, still wouldnt have a clue about anything fancy like a risotto. Food to me is to stop the earthquake in gloucester when my tummy starts a-rumbling

i'm very good at trying other peoples food if you ever want someone to test it though

Definately cook because I love it here.

I had no confidence in the kitchen when I met *Him* a couple of years living alone and parents who hadn't taught me to cook anything other than a cake meant I lived on oven baked pizza n chips.

Now, with a lot of learning curves, I'm great in the kitchen (with the learning curves to prove it lol)

Funny thing is, when I lived on rubbish, I was size 8, now we eat homecooked i'm borderline size 14/16. Go figure

I find ready meals bland and unimaginative, some way too expensive for what they are worth.

And I seldom eat out nowadays, except for things I cannot cook myself, like KFC, Whooper and kebabs!

Same here, my mum ruled the kitchen, found out that she doesnt see why she had to cook a meal till she was hungry so i guess she worked on the basis that if she taught us to cook, she stopped being in control and would have to eat when we wanted to.

Problem is that i feel its a parent that should teach their children how to cook and i can teach my kids little

To reiterate the OP - I dislike any ready made food and in particular fast food like MacD, KFC etc... It has no flavour and is quite dull. Even a jacket potato in the microwave cane be served with more imagination AND probably has more nutrional benefits... but hey that is just me.

..so did I, and scrolled down feelin increasingly embarassed at being on my own in fancy dress at a funeral.

great food is like great sex; if you put in the time and preperation to create something special, it will challenge your senses and fill you with pleasure; even eating can be a sensual act.

mushroom risotto is the one dish that i could live on, i can never get bored of.

My mother wasn't the greatest cook, which is why I taught myself and then my children.

My daughter in her first year at uni used to call me for advice about roast dinners, she cooked for all her friends.

Likewise my elder son who used to come to me for the family christmas dinners etc. would then empty the fridge and freezer and take all the left overs back to his student digs to feed the guys who were alone at christmas.

My son is now head chef in a rather exclusive seafood restaurant, and we all still have a great love of food and family get-together's round the table.

Never too late to learn a skill that never leaves you and improves week by week. xxxxx
