Should he be headlining Glastonbury?

As of right now on the patition site change.org, 23,671 think that they should "cancel Kanye West's headline slot and get a rock band."

Noel Gallagher will not be happy, he flipped when Jay-Z headlined glasto, lol. I'd probably go to catch a glimpse of Kim Kardashians ass though, she's bound to be there with Kanye.

It's Glasto you could have the chuckle brothers headlining and 200,000 wouldn't care, in fact after kasabian Barry and Paul don't sound such a bad idea.

Not being aware of Mr West until he crashed the stage at the brits suggesting Beck hand his award to someone less deserving of it, and never having heard an iota of West output, l can truthfully assert that Beck has more talent in his little finger than West could possibly hope to attain even if he lived to be 150 years old.

Poor poor choice. No progression for the festival. Personally thought the prodigy would be a major step up this year. Along with bands such as royal blood etc. For me the underground rock scene is becoming a huge thing now and its taking festivals by storm. Just look at Leeds festival this year, under metallica there are some great bands and some British. Time for the UK scene to boom

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Personally I can't stand him or his music either but the fact is that there are dozens of stages at Glasto. Go to another stage and watch somebody you like instead of Kanye, it's that simple. There's more to life than the Pyramid Stage.

Well it looks like I'm in the minority here, but in answer to the OP, yes.

First of all, in reaction to the actual petition itself, what makes people think that it will actually make a difference? It's not like Kanye West has become such a divisive figure overnight! The Eavis's aren't so out of touch that they didn't know that booking him would be so controversial, they know what he's about, they know what to expect(ish), yet they still booked him.

Second of all, nobody is being forced to go and watch him on the pyramid, there are TONNES of other places to be at glasto to have a good time. It'll be 2 hours out of 5 days, on 1 stage out of over 50, 1 act out of 100s, quite simple really, find something/somewhere else to do/be for those 2 hours.

I'm genuinely surprised about how riled up people are getting about him being booked! Especially considering that glastonbury is one of the most diverse festivals in the uk. It's not like getting Coldplay to headline Download or Britney Spears to headline Reading! Why shouldn't one of the best/most popular rappers of the last 5-10 years headline! Jay-z did it. Yes, he says a hell of a lot of sh*t but he's not the only one. I'm sure the gallaghers have come out with a lot a crap, saying oasis best band in world etc. It's not just Kanye who's an arrogant musician/artist.

You might not like him, you might not like his music(loads of people do, he's definitely big enough to headline) (each to their own, music taste will always divide) but the animosity towards him being booked is just plain weird!

If you feel like he's everywhere and you've had enough of him, I suggest that next time you see him mentioned, take a deep breath.................and just scroll past it people get wound up wayyyyy too easily online, everyone just needs to relaaxx (I guess that's me right now )

I'm not saying that it's going to happen but if people do actually bottle him, then they're just as bad as he "supposedly" is. And if people go to see him just to do that or to boo, then that is just sad. It says more about the people doing it then it does about him.

In regards to his music, some people saying that he has become too commercial, really?? His image maybe, but music wise I've no idea how Yeezus could be seen as commercial, even most of Twisted Dark Fantasy is far from commercial, and what about All Day? Arguably, his most commercial stuff came from his first three/four albums.

RIP glasto, really? One single act is going to cause so much damage to the biggest festival in the uk maybe even the world? A festival that nearly (probably over) a million people register for, with only 150000 tickets available, where most people who actually go regularly hardly ever return just because of the line up but because of the place and the festival itself!

No progression? If you're having the same types of acts playing year in year out, how is that progression? How many times have The Prodigy already played glastonbury? This is progression!

The line up hasn't even been announced yet! Who's saying that it won't be full of great British acts? Plus there is still one more headliner to be announced...

And going back to the petition, the guy who started it hasn't even been to glastonbury before, yet he's demandig change!? It really is just quite petty, there are loads more important things to be campaigning for.

Rant over. just thought that there needed to be some more pro Kanye points instead of all the negativity I could probably say more but I think I've said enough for now

I'm not going to glasto this year and when I saw Kanye was appearing I utterly regret it. He will give an amazing stage show. He says daft things and attracts a lot of attention but his music is great. I don't have to like the person to enjoy the music, all day, all day.

You are joking? Kasabian were brilliant, possibly the best headline act over the past few years.

As for Kanye, he puts on a visually good show, but not sure his music will stand up to scrutiny, but let's judge him on the performance.

Whilst I'm not happy about then booking Kanye West and I'll be elsewhere on the night; that's a ridiculous statement!

Bloodstock is a niche festival and very good but won't grow much beyond its current confines unless it becomes more diverse, which by it's very nature, it can't really.

Sonosphere has been cancelled twice, and is already a dead duck.

Download will always be popular but is as commercial as any other festival these days.

Reading and Leeds cater to a completely different demographic...I never feel that it's likely to kick off at any minute at Glastonbury, whereas that atmosphere hangs in the air constantly at Reading!

Splendour is pretty much a boutique festival and we'll probably remain so.

As for Glastonbury being the once great festival that Radiohead headlined, so did Level 42!

No doubt there were people twenty years ago bemoaning the fact that Radiohead were headlining and not some act that headlined 20 years previously like Blood, Sweat & Tears or whatever.

He isn't my cup of tea, but never is Jay Z and he was great. I saw Kanye west at the V festival a few years ago and he was shocking, most people left...... As for the previous comments regarding the British rock scene, Royal Blood are great, I saw them last week however they don't have the amount of songs needed to headline any festival yet, let alone a worldwide event like Glastonbury.

We saw Kanye at the Brit awards and he wasn't our thing , but everyone has their taste . To say a festival is dead because he has been booked is ridiculous.

he is one of the biggest stars around and his shows are definately different .

We are going to 7 festivals this year and every one of them has been slated by people wanting to see their favourite band . And as festival regulars everyone is generally too pissed to care by the time the headline act comes on

The best thing about festivals is if there is one artist you don't like, go see someone else. I quite like Kanye West he is a talking point and musically he tries to be different. Which is what Glastonbury is about. I love the BBC coverage where I can record everything then watch what I want.

perhaps that didn't come across very well as that wasn't what I meant but like everything on here my comment is open to interpretation. I don't judge anyone on their music taste. I happen to have an eclectic taste myself. I was more referring to how Glasto is becoming more commercialised and not having the same vibe as it used to. Having been many times before,in my opinion (which I am entitled to) it just seems to be evolving into the main stream "in thing to do". That is fine and fair enough I may have offended some by saying so. Point taken and I'm not ashamed to admit when I'm in the wrong so sorry if anyone is offended or disagrees with my own personal view. I still think it has changed and doesn't have the same chilled out vibe of old. I guess everything moves with the times though.

Rant over. just thought that there needed to be some more pro Kanye points instead of all the negativity I could probably say more but I think I've said enough for now "

Really? Judging people based on their music taste? Didn't realise I was back at school. perhaps that didn't come across very well as that wasn't what I meant but like everything on here my comment is open to interpretation. "

The first year I went was when they stopped letting the travellers in. Apparently that was going to be the death of it. Now it has 3 or 4 times the capacity and sells out in an hour. Whether the changes are for the best or not is debatable but people saying that Glastonbury is dying (or similar) really make me laugh.

Quite right. I didn't want to see Mettalica and I didn't want to see the Stones. There were plenty of other acts to see. I didn't want to see Dolly, but ended up doing so, but got to say she was bloody brilliant. See, it's all about the variety.

I don't want to see Kanye West but I'm fairly certain there'll be something on I do want to see...Hot Chip are awaiting confirmation and they'd be a great alternative on The Other Stage, for starters. Fuck, even Motorhead are a strong rumour and they're not 'Glasto music' either!

"Well it looks like I'm in the minority here, but in answer to the OP, yes.

Not a fan myself but pretty sure i wouldnt cancel my ticket just for that !

There are numerous other acts all over the festival if you don't want to watch him. Really struggle to understand why people get so uptight about these things. The great thing about music is its diversity, and there is plenty of that on offer at Glasto.

Hip Hop was never represented very well at Glastonbury, but I think that was down to the artists and the organisers not seeing the two as compatible. It would have been great to see the real Old school hip hop artists there. And I'm talking electro as well.

Kanye SHOULD headline.

Why, because its the Eavus families land and festival.

If they ask him to headline and he accepts, none if us have the right to complain. Whatvwe should do is not buy a ticket and not watch the performance.

Glastonbury is all about variey in music. Why should it be forever rock bands that play glastonbury?

If in factvthis was the case, it would be a 1 day festival as at the moment there is so few CURRENT rock bands about of quality.

I have seen Kabye west live and he does put in a great performance.

I don't have the RIGHT to complain? Why? I'm complaining because it's putting crap acts on (and the fact that the ticket price has doubled in less than ten years - it was £1 in 1970!) that puts me off, so I complain. I'm all for variety in the music that is played there, that's what it's always been about. I just think there are better acts to put on. It's pandering to sleb culture. No doubt Hello magazine will be given exclusive backstage passes to ensure they get all the best pics of his wifes ridiculous backside. I haven't seen him perform live, in the flesh, but I have seen video footage of him performing live. I wasn't impressed.

Few CURRENT rock bands about? What does that even mean? You don't have to be "current" to play at Glastonbury. That (was) the beauty of it.
