Best Before Dates

I will confess to rigidly sticking to them but after watching a program on the BBC the other week where a company sell only food beyond the best before date it got me curious.

A woman saved £70 on her weekly shop just by things being out of date. I placed an order and cant taste anything different...

I know back in the day there weren't labels on milk/meat etc just used common sense with regards to fresh produce (dairy/meats) but im still not brave enough to just do the visual and sniff test just yet and wont consume anything over the USE BY date

never paid any attention to best before dates. Use by is a bit different but if it smells ok I will eat it. I only glow in the dark on a very black night

hiding from cock pics.

I use the dates as a suggestion. If it looks and smells ok we eat it. I have never given my family food poisoning... ( yet)

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I buy stuff that's about to go out of date and pop it in the freezer. Things like cheese and eggs can be used way after their use by date. Most meat is fine, but chicken, fish, and shellfish are best used by the sell by date. Milk gets chucked out when it smells off, yoghurt and cottage cheese when it goes mouldy.

You hit the nail on the head. Common sense has to play a large part. Also, there are two different advisories. One is "best before", the other is "use by".

The best before dates are usually only suggestions that the product is at its best up until that date. Even so, I have eaten food recently that was four days past its "use by".

I am certain that one day past use by wouldn't have been a problem.

I ignore the dates, have skimmed milk, which as I only have it in drinks and buy a 4pint carton, is often a week out of date by the time Iv used it, low fat content means its fine, and I always sniff it 1st, I just check the look, smell etc and never had any trouble.x

Chicken is one thing I would never use after the sell by, pork's another but I'm paranoid about chicken anyway

I'll give most things a go after the use by date. I just pick off the green bits if there is any.

I use my sense of common, smell and sight to determine if food is good to eat. Some stuff is risker than others and how it's stored makes a big difference. I'm not rigid about it.

I pay attention to use by dates on meat and fish, but everything else I just go by whether it looks and smells ok. It hasn't finished me off yet

Never pay any attention to dates and not poisoned myself or anyone else yet.

If it looks ok, smells ok and isnt mouldy then it's good food.

I got told once that the bacteria that could make you really poorly probably won't taint the meat anyway so it will still smell/taste/look totally fine.

After working in a butchers/deli for 6 years and seeing some of the perfectly fine meat having to be chucked because it was past it's dates I pay no attention to dates on anything any more.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Best before helps stock rotation.

Use by is a bit more serious.

If you have a weak immune system then use by is probably best followed. However, once you've cooked it you've probably bought yourself another day or two unless it's rice. Cooked rice can be very dangerous.

I've recently got Involved with a bit of voluntary work to help food waste (using food which is not deemed good neigh to sell in supermarkets) but it's fine apart from cosmetics

Admittedly it's fruit and veg but I do like a 'oops' sticker and I'd just freeze meat/fish if I wasn't going to use it.

I do like the sniff test though
