Unless you did IT at school or college you will have no idea how things work. You can get free lessons on the basics at a library or learning centre near you. Everyone should know the basics in this age of email and online banking etc. I teach myself a lot of things but some you need to be shown. My ex couldn't grasp the idea that a saved document on his laptop wasn't accessible on mine unless I uploaded it or emailed it to myself. Took a while to get him to understand.

You're right. I love all things tech related as does my son and it's easy to forget that not everybody is as up to speed when you're surrounded by geeks.

I'm thinking about selling my car and getting a different one.

Will I have to take my driving test again, or will I be ok with the license I have?

The more time you spend on your pc the more familiar you become with it. Windows 8 on a non touch screen device was a pain at first, plus finding everything on the screen. They added the windows start icon to 8.1 which made it marginally easier but it took me a good week to work out where everything was and how to access it.

You shouldn't feel silly. The whole point of asking a question is to fill a gap in your knowledge. No one knows everything.

Personally, I find it rather frustrating that microsoft keep changing the look of the windows operating system - and there's more help available now than there was 20 years ago - but this is because of how widespread the use of computers has become - to the point that even people who don't actually need such a thing have one.

As for accessing your e-mail, do you do so via an internet browser (using Google chrome, firefox or Internet explorer) or do you use a separate e-mail client (outlook, outlook express etc)

If you access via a browser then you just carry on as you are, however, if you are using a dedicated client, you will need to transfer any saved messages you might want to hold on to over to the new machine and, if you're buying a brand new laptop, you will need to install an e-mail client as Windows no longer comes with one as standard. An e-mail client will also need to be configured to access your mail.

I didn't do IT at school and yet I ended up managing an IT support department in the city. Mind you, when I left college and began working, the PC was still relatively new and wasn't anywhere near as widely used as they are today.

Clearly an expert at everything, except perhaps manners and tolerance.

If I may high jack this thread for a moment

My laptop won't start up properly, it boots from the hard drive, but the hard drive working light is going mental for ages after I switch it on, when I try to load something from my desktop it either won't load at all or it takes about 45 minuets to load then it just stops responding, could it be a memory problem, a hard disk fault, or could I have deleted a small part of windows by mistake while I was trying to clear disk space, I have all my files backed up, and was thinking if totaly taking it back to factory settings, I don't have the vista disk though, can I down load it from somewhere to a memory stick? Any ideas?

its possible you may have a virus or malaware on your computer/laptop.if you have system restore i would shut that down, then do a scan, thats if you do have any sort of virus scanner loaded, you might have to run that also in safe mode...

bradford

your hard drive is failing you need to get another hard drive

windows is trying to access the info but struggerling to get the info off the hard drive to finish booting it

a slow system or hard to access it as the info above is the same problem

hard drive failure

also you may not be able to save the info upon the hard drive unless you have made a disk backup

which means you need an operating system reinstalled upon the new hard drive
