Somewhere in North Norfolk

Several of my friends on Facebook shared a photo that outraged them yesterday, complete with furious comments, because someone said it deserves to go viral.

It was a photo of a student urinating on a war memorial.

I agree it's a disgusting, disrespectful act but a quick Google, before I jumped on the bandwagon, showed the man was arrested and in court for it in November 2009.

Does nobody check these things?! It could be a faked smear campaign they're blindly sharing for all they know.

It's not even the first time these people have shared old news or hoaxes, (and I've pointed it out to them before).

They're bright enough that they should know better.

Some people should not be trusted with Facebook.

People who do that will never change, they are the same people who read the headlines but not the story.

Unfriend them is the only answer. Or don't use Facebook. Or get better friends.

So that's three answers!

Unfortunately I'm related to most of them.

They really are, most of them, very intelligent, capable people. They're just prone, for some reason, to believing anything it says on Facebook.

It may be time for a study and a paper on Facebook Blindness.

It's why I'll never use it.

When you have UKIP voting, Daily Mail reading, 'outraged from Surbiton' online then facts tend to rapidly out the window and before you know it some innocent has started everything from WW2 to The Gulf War and is responsible for IS, global warnings, alcohol abuse and celebrity divorces.

It's the worlds greatest Chinese whisper network, perfect for gossiping busybodies with nothing better to do!

It keeps me in touch, easily, with friends in the States and in Singapore. They don't, fortunately, share shite.

It was impossible to refuse to add members of my family and certain friends when they found out I had an account though. And they do share shite.

Most of these people, if reading a story in a newspaper, will keep an open mind until they know the facts because they know the media usually have an agenda. On Facebook it all goes right out of the window.

I'm wondering if Facebook has some sort of mind control technology or something.

There's so many that have popped up on mine over the last couple of years that I've systematically deleted anyone who shares them. Or I'll tell them that it's just plain stupid. It's just pure ignorance and stupidity. Friends and family used to get 1 mistake but after so many different people making mistakes they get "unfriended" on the first one

...but not before pointing out why the story of the soldier in uniform being refused service at a tesco store in case it offended Muslim customers...etc etc etc is absolute rubbish. Posting the reasons on there wall giving them the links that it took me less than a minute to find and explaining that while I love them as a person I have a very low tolerance of ignorance stupidity and bullshit when it's coming from fully grown adults.

Do not be afraid to unfriend people they can always send you another request and they usually learn the lesson the first time.

One of them, having just seen my post pointing out it was in 2009, has replied saying, basically, it's his own fault this is still dragging behind him.

FFS.

He was a d*unk student. He was sentenced and paid the dues a Magistrate thought fair.

My response to someone who has just gone down massively in my estimation is that it wouldn't still be following him if people didn't keep sharing it without checking the facts.

A facebook friend of mine recently re posted a van with number plate saying it had been used in a crime. I asked for evidence and she couldn't give any. I really don't like that kind of thing.

Happens here too, someone posts a one-sided version of events and everyone rushes to condemn the alleged perpetrator.

I think that the people who share this stuff only do so because it reinforces there own beliefs and somehow reading it on the Internet somehow validates their point of view and their need to share this welcome bit of news.

Reminds me of people unwittingly sharing Britons First posts on facebook. A quick flick through there facebook page and it becomes apparent that BF Want a crusade and to annihilate all Muslims which in effect makes BF members a terrorist political party.

Recently they posted a picture of man with holding a sine saying 'Boycott bigotry Kill all non-muslims'. Unforthuntly for BF they forgot to doctor the logo of People for the American way a veterans charity which was on a sine in the background. The person they posted name was Dawud Walid former US Navy vet and Marines, proud American patriot who has won medals for bravery. He is also now anti Islamist and Islamic relations campaigner. He is a member of a number of Vetrain charities like People for the American way. And recently has become a university lecturer and advisor to the Obahma Regime.

Dawud Walid is now considering legal action against the far-right Christamist party.

I love how social media encourages people to get on their high horses and repost things they've just come across yet it could have happened 5-10-20 years ago. It makes me chuckle. It's like a few weeks ago when everyone was commenting saying OMG Tony Hart is dead when he's been dead years jut because someone somewhere had only just seen he was dead and didn't read the article. Social media will eventually destroy facts and truth and will render events inconsequential as people's ability to read and digest information is dwindling quickly. The are of conversation is dying as well but that's a rant for a different day.

My beliefs and my views are never wrong

No, I mean what pisses me off is stuff that's racist, homophobic or sexist, for example. I've got plenty of friends I disagree with completely about a lot of things but if they share something well considered or actually factual then that wouldn't piss me off. I might still completely disagree with it (and will probably say so) but it wouldn't annoy me and I don't mind seeing it.

You always come across as a very reasonable person. I was just pushing you to say.

Obviously if it's a link from the Guardian, they're dead to me."

I had a few "missing" children keep popping up. I did my research and found one of them to be a painting that looked lifelike. I mailed my friend and told her that some of these missing children aren't actually missing. To be fair I do know that actual missing people are looked for on Facebook so it could be a case of better safe than sorry for some people. I don't share any of them,I put my faith in the police and missing person's bureaus. A lot of share this stuff is used as marketing strategy by companies.

"I've made myself rather unpopular with some of my friends for posting things like - total bollocks as per hoaxslayer/snopes (with link) on their silly shares.

Yup. Two family members now having a strop because I pointed out they should check stories like that before posting."

I've had that. I pointed out to people that their posts are false or fake and they've had a strop at me for it. I came to realise that people really are as stupid as they look and even presenting them with the facts won't change their mind about something.

I only use facebook to keep in touch with mates with the same interests around the country, I skip over the shit posts, just the same as I don't read the papers or watch the news, but if I notice someone posting shite often then they're gone, I've got no time for it.

I'm happy to live my life of blissful ignorance, it's a happy bubble I live in

It amazes me how they are more put out at being told they are spreading bollocks than they are at the actual spreading of the rubbish itself.
