what we need is someone like, Uruguayan President José Mujica, poorest president in the world.

He doesnt have a problem against the rich but doesnt want them running his country, he does everything for the poor and working class

Dunno anything about a war though? Our leaders need to lead us into war, we may, or may not, follow.

As we are in Nato, if Putin attacks a Nato country we would have no choice but to defend them. As USA is in Nato though very doubtful Putin would try anything silly.

Labour had an economy in growth, after global meltdown due to banks. Then the Tories followed a plan that would not stimulate growth, pretty dumb really. The ukip Muppets, more of the same old Tory stuff make a lot of noise, but just as self interested.

A new force could be great but there's enormous pressure against it. I don't know who to vote for.

Yes and who was it who de-regulated the banks as one of his first acts as chancellor in 1997....Gordon Brown thats who. Because of his actions then made our situation worse when the global collapse happened. Also years of Labour over-spending, and never keeping any money aside in the kitty for potential problems arising (such as the global banking crisis), very irresponsible behaviour if you ask me.

That's very true but also, the Tory's were dead against Angela Mirkel's proposal for tighter regulated banks, which would tell me that they would have done similar to Brown.

We're fucked no matter who "gets in".

The current government was voted for by something like 5% of all people able to vote. There's no representation of the people at all. The whole system is a broken one that's left us with a worthless oligarchy almost edging upon what's looks like becoming dictatorship.

The really fucked bit is people still think the system is the right one regardless of how screwed they are by which government "party". It isn't, it's broken and until something changes we're all fucked. On one hand the Tories are a pretty fascist party but not necessarily appear the way due to media spin and ukip taking a ridiculously right wing stance.

Labour are somewhere in the middle and are just a bunch of buffoons who went to the same school as their Tory mates and will inevitably continue down the persecution if the poor route but blame their lib/Tory predecessors for putting in place something they now can't do anything about.

These politicians encourage division in society. Fucking nobheads!

The only real option is the greens, but then how can they really be an option in such a broken system?

In reality humans are way past the point of wishy washy middle ground politics to sort any of our current problems out.

Analytically looking at it we either need an ultra right wing or ultra left wing policy establishment.

The human in me choose the ultra left but the realistic side of me knows we'll get the ultra right as fear is a humans greatest response tool.

History teaches us what you lot vote for will have no consequences at all, no true change comes without bloodshed, isis know that and so does every world government.

But go ahead and vote for whoever as it will at least make you feel like your having a say.

Yes he did and I don't think that any Prime Minister of any political persuasion would have allowed a major High Street bank to fail. The fall out from a British bank failing would have been catastrophic and led to a far worse recession.

Costa Blanca Spain...

This is probably the most difficult election to call since the war. Even the so called experts are turned into waffling lumps of jelly when asked to make a prediction.

A few things we can be pretty certain of though.

There will not be a majority Labour or Tory government.

The Lib Dems will be decimated (at least) I think if they hold on to 20 MP's they will have done well.

Labour will get a good kicking in Scotland.

Minor party's will effect this election more than at any time in history. I doubt that the Greens will pick up any seats ( I even think Lucas will get kicked out in Brighton) but their vote share will affect the results in quite a few seats. Their problem is that their vote share is pretty evenly spread around the country so turning single figure polling into seats will be almost impossible for them.

UKIP will pick up some seats. While they are only polling at 15% their support is a lot more concentrated in certain areas than the Greens. I expect them to pick up ten or a dozen mostly from Kent, Essex, Lincolnshire, and possibly parts of Yorkshire and will cause havoc in lots of other seats where they don't win.

I don't expect to see Cameron or Milliband waving at the door of Downing St the following morning either. The horse trading could go on for days or even weeks before a government is formed and I wouldn't rule out another election before the end of the year.

Play nicely now children

Which ever party you vote for they are in politics for one thing....Themselves

Don't think there is a difference between labour/conservative and lib dems

Most have never had a proper job in there life, and then have the nerve to tell us we are in this together

Wouldn't trust any of them

Can't help but wonder what might happen if those people who have such a negative outlook would actually pause for a moment and look at the UK from the outside in.

Britain is great, Britain is booming and Britain is successful. If Britain were the abject failure that so many people think why do we get so many people from all over the world want to come her? It certainly is not because of the weather.

Britain and British people need to snap out of this mode of complacency and expectation and actually look at what we have. A stable democracy, a growing economy and opportunity for anyone who is prepared to make an effort. What is so wrong with that when is so many parts of the world there is nothing.

Let's be grateful for what we have in this country. I think some people are blinded by their own anger to such an extent that they simply do not see how fortunate they really are to live in this country.

Just as a matter of interest, if it is so bad here... Where is it better?

Good post.

Where is better? Apart from the weather certainly not Spain. France? Some have said that the French have a better lifestyle but just like the Greeks they are now finding out that eventually they have to pick up the tab for it. Germany is good, I certainly feel safer there but taxes are high and life is highly regulated, oh and it's fookin freezin in the winter.

I suppose it is difficult to compare say a rural French/Italian lifestyle with a British inner city and it would depend a lot on which socio economic group you belong to, but overall Britain is pretty good. Especially for anyone with a bit of entrepreneurial spirit.

Hard to say;

Food in their bellies (Mostly)

Roof over their heads (usually)

Secure employment (periodically)

Healthcare/welfare (consistently)

Benefits (argumentatively)

Social life (restrictively)

We need to identify a place where all the above become (uncompromising)

Question for you.

How would you advise a person to improve their situation in today's Britain ?

Rubbish. You cant pick out extremes in society and pretend that represents normality for everyone. This is nothing more than generalisation and exageration of negative point of view.

Britain is booming and is a great place to live. Why do you think we attract so many immigrants if we are on our knees? The pound is strong despite QE and this is a well known health check of the economy. Why would the pound be strong if we were in such a dire position?

I'd also be interested to see a verifiable link to "thousands" of disabled people committing suicide... but I supect its just a broad generalisation again because you have seen a story about one person.

If you want further decimation of arned forces at time we need to be on alert. If you further decimation in police numbers. If you want further destruction of nhs then vote tory.

Austerity has failed and think most other nations have woke up to fact.

Vote tory and things will be kot worse unless you are multi millionaire or major company like starbucks who get away paying tax earned on goods bought in uk.

Vote ukip all they offer is the stupid euro little englanders shite. They want nhs to be reolaced by private healthcare words from mouth of Farage who suddenly after realising he has been rumbles comes up with notion to give nhs money now.

As for Clegg may he rot in hell his campaign last time was fair deal for students then overnight student fees were trebled.

So yes while clearly some concerns re Labour out of the options available they are looking like the most fair for the vulnerable and less well off.

These exaggerated claims that the NHS owes its whole creation to the Labour party are only possible through the most colossal ignorance and misrepresentation of the past, of what was a cross-party consensus. The NHS was Britain's triumph, not Labour's.

And it was a conservative government that gave women the vote.

Who is generalising? It is a well known fact that the strength of a currency is an indication of the underlying economy. That is a fact. It is immaterial that a strong pound hurts exports. Britain has the strongest economy in Europe - again - just a fact. Britain created more jobs last year than the whole of the rest of the EU.

Central

Ref. the NHS, it's been the Conservatives and LibDems who have burdened our NHS this term.

After Cameron's "No top-down reorganisations of the NHS", which - once elected - they immediately made the biggest reorganisation in the NHS history, costing us £billions, which was £billions that would have been better spent upon patient care.

The LibDems helped them, supporting and voting through the Health and Social Care Act, which allows for many politicians and their buddies to make money out of the NHS. A lot of MPs work for companies that can provide services instead of the NHS, quelle surprise!

I see why the NHS can be better trusted in the hands of Labour. And why many would not trust Conservative or LibDems.

Where? Look where? Just give me a reliable source BBC/SKY/non tabloid newspaper. I am very open to be educated and to understand what is going on in the world but I prefer to be educated by things that can be verified.

I have not read or seen anything other than your post that says thousands of disabled people are committing suicide because they are being signed off as fit for work. That would be a scandal of epic proportions if true - rather than what it seems to be at the moment... Nothing more than a figment of a fevered imagination.

no it's not a fact ..... i'll give you a fact .... it's a fact that everytime we've had a strong pound it's resulted in severe recession. and in any case 0.7% growth is far from a boom .... it's bumping along the bottom.

WTF has that got to do with the price of fish? FFS!!! go hug a tree, and take wee Nicola with you, she can make the tea."

Britain is great, Britain is booming and Britain is successful. If Britain were the abject failure that so many people think why do we get so many people from all over the world want to come her? It certainly is not because of the weather.

Britain and British people need to snap out of this mode of complacency and expectation and actually look at what we have. Precisely this. I am a strong disability rights campaigner. Trust me there are 1000s. Have a look. But if your world is ok that blind eye comes in handy.

Where?

Nothing more than a figment of a fevered imagination."

I concur , austerity is tough and we can argue the old class arguement till the cows come home ... But austerity wouldnt be needed if the previous government hadnt spent loads more that we had ....tax n spend tax n spend .... The UK credit card was maxed out !!! Now we have a government who are able to deliver economic stabilty , long way from perfect but i trust them to have one more term to show they csn deliver ..... Labour WILL simply mortgage us the hilt again !! Im still not yet decided other than there is no way on gods earth i want milliband as PM OR balls in charge of anything more than paperclips !!!!

I'm a big believer that we should have mandatory voting. It's absolutely disgusting that you can get less than 30% turn out, and less than 50% of that gets to pick the governing party. I also believe in voting for who will benefit YOU. Not "my family has voted tory for 70 years" and so on. Like an early poster stated, she will vote labour because they will raise benefits which will be good for her. That's a sensible outlook. It's not a good outcome for me as I'm not on benefits, the only party that will do anything for me is ukip, so they will get my vote this time. Next time it could be labour, although I doubt it, or even the green party. With these 2 simple things, we truly would have a government for the majority

Voting or revolution are the only two ways of changing a goverment that is not to the taste of the people. The problem with revolution is that you end up with just another dictator and people die to put him/her there. I think I' will go for the voting option.

At times like this when the miserable, the moaning, the whining and the complaining look for more reasons to be downbeat. I think about JFK and what he said...

.... "ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country... "

There seems to be collective negative mind set amongst some people. It is easy to find fault and identify failure and failings but it is far more enlightening to identify opportunity and to celebrate success. There should be no place for negativity in life.

Well said. I had an issue which I felt strongly about recently, strongly enough to write to my MP and the leader of the opposition. MP was brilliant and has promised to raise my concerns with PM and Minister. Response from Miliband......nothing. So I know who I will be voting for. Great debate (well, some of it anyway lol!).

I'd like to see Labour rule out a deal with the SNP, which would to me indicate that they think they can win it on their own, with some sort of manifesto.

Then I'd like to see a real televised debate between Ukip, Tories, Labour and the LibDems, where they actually have a chance to put figures on their promises, which can be analysed by an independent group.

Only then will we have some sort of idea where the next govt should come from.

Why do people keep saying the credit card was maxed out!!.

The condems have added more debt in five years than labour did in ten... There's a fact!.

Gordon brown sold gold cheap.. To keep gold cheap on the behest of the banks that were in trouble.. There's a fact!.

Labour and the Tories caused the banking problems we've faced for 7 years and will continue to face for quite a few more.... There's a fact.

Whether a currency is high or low has nothing to do with politicians... They've been doing there utmost to devalue it for the last five years just like they have done for 30 years down 60 odd % ... There's a fact.

It's actually more of a sign off the ineptness of the other currency's that it's strong... That's a fact.

Real GDP is actually down over the last 7 years... There's another fact.

And that was after we've added prostitution, drugs, fraud and everything else we could possibly conceive as a product.

If we weren't in a bond bubble, housing bubble, stock bubble caused by 500 billion of QE ( pretty much free money given away right at the top of the ladder in the hope it will feed down) we would be in worse gdp collapse in 50 years...

And in case it's escaped anyone's notice the m2 money bench which basically measurers how many times the money changes hands or the velocity of it( the more hands the better as it's passed from person to person through goods and services) is at a/30 year low, which means the rich are basically keeping all the QE and whamming it into ponzi money making schemes, probably why there wealth has grown 20% in the austerity years.. That's not a fact but my best guess

The trouble with compulsory voting is when you have a country where all political parties are too similar, - then that in itself becomes a kind of dictatorship, especially when you have to vote for one of the same,- you know, like in a country that has the widest gap between the haves & have not's in Western Europe & it's getting wider, - especially in that case!!!

Hmmmmmmmm, that kind of country sounds familiar to me?????

I think Eisenhowers farewell speech would be more appropriate in this day and age than JFK.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military–industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals

Party politics is not the politics of the people. It focuses on petty point scoring, propagandist hype & preys upon ignorance & fear....which sadly is reflected in this thread.

I live in hope that whichever way the Government swings, left or right, it champions the needs of those who rarely have a voice - the disenfranchised, those who struggle on a daily basis because their socio economic 'label' renders them to be an unattractive vote. One day we might call ourselves truly a 'Great' Britain because our Government builds policies that invest in all our children, care for our elderly, respect our countryside & creates an economy that regenerates communities, celebrates our diversity & enriches the many not the few

Truth is about mainstream parties, they're all run by self serving pricks who are in it for themselves. They say what they want you to hear, do nothing they promise, unless it benefits the real leaders of the country, ie Tesco and the likes, spend their time in office schmoozing up to potential employers, just look at Tony Blair for that one, then piss off and leave a right state for the next bloke, claiming a big fat pension along the way. Do you think Cam/Clegg/Milli give a shot about you, Joe Average? He'll no, it could be £10 a litre for fuel, vat at 35%, income tax at 50%, average shop at £250 a week, £3k a year to fuel your home and they'd still have more money left over than you will earn this year. Having them run the country for the working man, is about as useful as putting a chimp in charge of nasa. They are so far detached, they don't know what the people on the ground need

''Government statistics reveal that between January 2010 and January 2011, 10,600 sick and disabled people died within six weeks of being assessed. Government statistics also revealed that of those who had been put into the 'Work Related Activity Group' (which prepares claimants for future work), 1300 died within 6 weeks.

These are figures published by the UK government, and are related via Widepedia, which has the original sources for the data.

Regardless of who gets in there are still no easy answers.

We are spending per year £80 billion more than we pay in tax.

The solutions are simple, tax people more and upset those who pay tax and make those who can move their money around more to hide it more from the tax man leaving the burden heavier with the middle to low income people who can't move their money.

Reduce spending and upset anyone who uses government services.

Borrow more and tax the next generation up to the hilt. Then they can bemoan the older generation for being selfish twats who saw fit to leave the next generation all their problems.

We have overspent and no one has a simple way out of this problem. If we are very very lucky we will get through the next five years with more freezes on spending and hope that GDP covers the gap meaning no one has to pay more in taxes and the government of which ever colour can claim to be extremely clever.

If we had to live within our means from tomorrow, we would have to stop all spending on education. Or Cut NHS spending by 2 thirds.

No simple solutions here as Greece have recently found out. Everyone loves voting for more spending and less tax, but when those lending to the country say go fuck off. Then reality hits.

A look back through history will tell you that recession can't end without a property crash. While the average Joe is spending over half their income keeping a roof over their heads, they have no brass in pocket to spend. Everything suffers and the roundabout keeps spinning. All the while the bank of England keeps interest rates low, we will never get out of this mess. It's not nice to say, but we need to see keys being thrown back at the mortgage companies again. Then let the banks hand the properties to the government, in lieu of tax, now you have more social housing, then put proper controls on property prices, to stop another property bubble ever happening again

Simple answer, they should get the average wage rise given to public sector workers. MP's are public sector workers so they decided all the wages in the public sector and they get the average, takes the politics right out of the equation.

You're like a little dictator dude/ette; you want proof from anyone who's posts don't suit your Tory outlook yet you post outrageous drivel about how great things are here like you've just arrived from la la land, - but with no proof! ........I keep hearing those Aunty Cameron voices in my head again, - NNNNOOOOOOOO, please no more!!

*off for more therapy!

What have I said that is untrue or cannot be verified by a noteworthy and factual resource? Britain is booming and this is Labours big problem.

What was said about THOUSANDS of disabled people committing suicide is just made up nonsense because it can't be verified. "

Britain is booming? the treasury is reeling from the lower revenues from oil and gas, we are now looking at the possibility of negative inflation rates.....do you know what that entails? Basically it will mean that if you have money in the bank then you will pay the banks for the luxury because interest rates will follow suit. Britain isn't booming at all, London maybe booming, the south may be comfortable,,,,,everywhere else is in the shit. Too much investment in the south.....but that's where the government were born, brought up and went to university......silver spoons abound down south.

"A look back through history will tell you that recession can't end without a property crash. Then let the banks hand the properties to the government, in lieu of tax, now you have more social housing, then put proper controls on property prices, to stop another property bubble ever happening again"
.

I completely agree with you unfortunately they've collateralised and equitised every property in Britain to keep the banks afloat, if the property prices drop big, so do the banks and that is the primary reason those interest rates haven't gone anywhere and probably won't for quite awhile.

The problem we find are selves in today is the making of greedy politicians 30-40 years ago who thought a country could make a living off the finance industry, paper shuffling, services and housing, unfortunately our balance of payments have caught up on us.... What we've found out now is the people who said 30 years ago that it will all end in tears were right.

"Does it really matter? They're all a bunch of upper class bell ends who don't know what it's like to live in the real world. These cuts are all bullshit, there's enough money to go around, they just support the interests of bankers and corporations and what have you.

We the people of Britain should stad up for ourselves and say NO!! Cameron you fat faced toff!! We will not live our lives being your economic slaves!! And then overthrow the government and then have a big orgy outside number 10

And if farage and millaband think they're joining the orgy they can fuck off! Nick clegg wouldn't want to join. Cameron took his manhood away years ago.

It's time for a revolution boys and girls. Grab your pitch faulks and follow me to the gang bang!! "

The rather sad thing is that there are millions just like you who think that there is loads of money... Somewhere, that someone has that really should be given to us.... Cos like, we deserve it.

I want to know why so few people ever question just what the fuck have successive governments spent all if the tax receipts on and why have we got such a gargantuan government bill that despite recent government cuts us still way to big.

What really do people want and expect? How can the country give, give, give if it does not have the tax receipts to support the promises?

You have a stark choice in May. Choose selfishly to accept bribes for votes from Labour. They who will take from the rich to give to the poor (this actually means borrow money because historical precedents prove that higher taxes result in less revenue collected). Alternatively, you can choose a path that is committed to reduce wasteful government spending and, by default reduce taxes as a consequence.
