Ford Focus new DPF

I got away with jet washing it out once, but the problem came back so I have dug deep and paid a whopping £250 for a new one, now I am out in the pissing rain trying to fit it, what fun I am having :-$

Do you only do short journeys ??? Dpf's will usually self clean but need to reach about 600 degrees so short journeys dont do it and they carbon up, good blast down motorway never harms

Could be worse mate, the new engine for Hids fiesta is sitting in the garden waiting for me to install it after the old one shot it's oil all over the motorway

yes that is my problem my drive to work is less than 10 minutes away, and I don't do much driving anywhere these days, so I think I need to sell it and go back to a petrol car.

£250 sounds incredibly cheap unless its a aftermarket one? I cleaned the one on my van with caustic soda its like new again. Mercedes quoted £1400 for new one the high cost is apparently down to the platinum etc in them and the aftermarket ones dont have this in so are cheaper

yes it is an aftermarket one, I dare say one from ford would be some crazy price. well almost got it back together now, I will need to make sure I take it for a half hour run at least once a week, till I buy a new car, back to good old petrol I think lol.

You must, Must, MUST use a low SAPS oil with any vehicle with a dpf as it helps to prevent sooting in the first place. They are a complete pain in the arse but usually down to ignorance from owners.

that's it back to together, just got to read the little book that came with it, probably telling me how to run it in. I did get one off eBay for a £170 but it was not quite the same so get to send that back now.

As much as your presuming the DPF has fade on the fords if any fault codes exist in engine Ecu the car will no regenerate the DPF even if it caused by one glow plug failing, if there are other faults listed apart from DPF one IT can often be caused by a minor air leak in intake system that car does not see as permanent fault but will cause excess soot build up... Occasional half hour drive on motorway at about 60-70 mph steady speed when all ok should see your problem not return... Correct type of oil as mentioned is also very important...

I've been in trade most of my life and am an electronic diagnostic technician with own garage... !

Diesel vehicles with diesel particulate filter (DPF)

If you have a diesel car fitted with a DPF you must use one of the latest 'low SAPS' (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous, Sulphur) oils. Using 'normal' oil instead of low SAPS can result in blocking of the DPF.

C1 Low SAPS (0.5% ash) fuel efficient

C2 Mid SAPS (0.8% ash) fuel efficient, performance

C3 Mid SAPS (0.8% ash)

Unfortunately that's not the case anymore, as from FEB 2014 if a DPF was fitted it has to be in place and is checked on MOT visual inspection only so if it is cored then as long as it is not smoking you will be ok. But if some dead eyed dick spots that it has been re welded then they will fail it. All diesels from 2007 have had to have DPF fitted bloody EU again. The dealers don't tell you all of this of corse LoL

My civic has a straight pipe exhaust, but all the bits will just get clamped back on when it's due an MOT

Thank fuck they dont test for it here in ireland yet. I too have a problem with short journeys and the dpf went in my mazda6 2 yrs ago...i havent had it replaced and it passed an NCT (mot) here recently with flying colours

I'm fully aware they're clamping down on it, but it happens and it will keep happening.

I had mine serviced at a main dealer on Thursday and was just advised the exhaust will need to be back to standard before the MOT. Any modifications I make, I make sure it can go back to standard easily if needed

I just think modern diesels are completely the wrong type of engine for most people who buy them!.

They get hung up on that 20-30 mpg more and miss the bits that cost more in between

A guy I work with wants an Astra diesel to do about 6000 miles a year !! If that !!

Lots of people who are into modified cars such as myself buy diesel simply because they are easier to tune up

The engine warning light came on on my Mondeo this week. The garage diagnosed an EGR sensor fault and have just switched the warning light off . A new sensor is £250 and I was wondering if it is worth attempting to clean the old sensor .

There's always the option of mapping the code out, heard its a popular way of doing it

If you're only doing short journeys, don't be tempted by the '100 mpg' that modern diesels can do. Dpf is only the start. If that is clogging, then so too will the egr valve. Once that clogs it will blow the turbo.

Happened to us three weeks out of warranty, and had to go to head of Skoda UK before they agreed to cover it. They basically told us to expect it to fail every three years!

Back to petrol, for us, despite the fact we 'technically' did the annual mileage for a diesel.

Oh, and don't blame the EU, the idea is to improve air quality for your children

Cleaning it is usually enough and doesn't take long on most cars, all you need is some sockets and a can of carb cleaner.

Slightly inaccurate.

There's loads of post 2007 cars without a DPF. I think you mean new models had to have them fitted because my 2007 Alfa GT doesn't have one and none of them did right up until production ended in 2010.

Have the dpf removed. ....I found out about this little bugger on my Mazda, loved that car but it blew up Thx to the dpf. Like others said, good blast on motorway or drive in 3rd gear
