This day, really, is to highlight the plights of women around the world. There are many oppressive regimes where every day is most certainly not women's day.

It's not so much a celebration of women, although it's that to an extent, it's more about inequalities where women are refused education, are sold into marriage at a ridiculously young age, can be stoned or beaten for being raped, or even killed in an "honour killing".

Those types of issues, which must be highlighted and campaigned against, are mainly women's issues.

Men have days for specific health issues but they don't face many significant issues of repression simply for being male, which is what women's day is about.

That's why it's not a person's day.

I don't disagree that women go through horrific ordeals on a daily basis whether it's forced marriages etc but I do also consider that sometimes men get the raw end of the deal. Men go through horrific ordeals also and I do thinks these ordeals are often not highlighted.

This is not meant to be a gender division thread but it's inevitable some will feel they have to make it so.

Surely the key here is 'International'. It's easy to be cynical about it living in Britain; I don't feel my life is particularly oppressed or that I lack the same opportunities or rights as a man. Elsewhere in the world, this is still categorically not the case, so where is the negativity in recognising that fact?

Lol as if! On a serious note, the day is about reflecting on the oppression of women around the world that continues day in day out. Child marriage. Genital mutilation. Sexual violence. Voices ignored as 'she's just a woman'. Pay gaps still continuing. A further motherhood pay gap on top of the one for being a woman. Etc etc. Well worth thinking on that as a woman, and mother to daughters.

the op has been around long enough to know what threads are seen as provocative and divide the forum, it always happens so nothing is going to change now.

In all the years I've been on here I've never once seen one of the women that post such threads start threads on male issues, when they do I will start to believe they actually do want equality

Not that I want to make a thread about Women's Day into a thread about male issues, I really can't think of many cases where men are oppressed simply for being male, and very few are pervasive problems experienced worldwide.

This isn't an appropriate place to discuss it, I feel, but I'm thinking about the plights of men internationally that we need to be made aware of. If someone would like to start a thread about that, maybe I'll be made more aware by it.

Because I'm very aware of issues facing women, it doesn't mean I am dismissive of or disinterested in and issues facing men, simply because they're men.

I'm not disputing the issues women face and I never will dispute the issues in regards to genital mutilation and the pay issue however there are now many employers paying out millions with fair pay suits being taken out. I also know that women have fought for 100 of years to be equal to men. I just think we lack equality and I do think sometimes men get the raw end of the deal. That is just my opinion and I'm sure that they will be many that will disagree with that and that's fine.

I'd like someone to start another thread to tell me how men are repressed for being men because I'm not seeing it and I'd genuinely like to hear other points of _iew.

However, as you say, this is a thread about Women's Day and the issues faced internationally by women.

I consider myself lucky to have been born here. This country isn't perfect but I was able to get an education, was allowed to learn to drive, faced no risk of being forced into marriage, can dress as I choose, be open about my sexuality, be that straight, gay, bi, or other, choose virtually any career... The list goes on.

Women everywhere in the world should have those rights too.

It's not my cause, it's relevant to all of us.

I am angry that women are used as sexual trade in wars, that they are denied the right to drive, that they are oppressed.

Yet the choice made here is to pick up a thread that you (not just you in that use of you) want to oppose just to do that.

I normally ignore the posts you and others make detracting from the purpose of the thread when it's about feminism but today the nuclear button was pushed.

"

no one is saying these are not relevant issues, I agree with them fully, my argument is, that there are women on these forums that are obsessed about equality, yet don't treat men's issues the same, same as the domestic violence thread, no one mentioned there was only ten places for men in the whole country until 3/4 of the way through the thread and then practically dismissed.

How do you think us women feel when the feminists start.

We are NEVER going to agree on these threads as well you know.

But I don't accept being told to fuck off because I have an opinion that differs from yours, I'm actually quite disappointed in you

I have two definitions, every day life one where everyone wants equality for women and yes I would class myself as one.

Then there are the ones on the forums who in my opinion do nothing to help women's rights the way they put themselves across

I see nothing wrong in acknowledging today for what its is abut, and yes we know that there is oppression, injustice and discrimination for other 'groups' in society but surely on any specific thread about one issue we can't be the broadening it to all of the above..

maybe accept it for what it is and if ones conscience is touched or one is reminded of some of the many other wrongs then start a thread about it..?

"What's a feminist ?I have two definitions, every day life one where everyone wants equality for women and yes I would class myself as one.

Then there are the ones on the forums who in my opinion do nothing to help women's rights the way they put themselves across

"

Your first definition is nearer the globally accepted one. It in no way embodies a dislike of men. Simply the furthering of women's causes. None of which fill me with fear or dread.

Your second is personal to you as have been your comments to others throughout the thread. Including their right to speak in support of anything they might believe in.

I value your commenting tremendously.

"I see nothing wrong in acknowledging today for what its is abut, and yes we know that there is oppression, injustice and discrimination for other 'groups' in society but surely on any specific thread about one issue we can't be the broadening it to all of the above..

maybe accept it for what it is and if ones conscience is touched or one is reminded of some of the many other wrongs then start a thread about it..? "

Thank you for that. Happy International Women's Day to you!

Whether you believe or not x

"I did wish EVERYONE regardless a happy international womans' day.

This is not meant to be a gender division thread but it's inevitable some will feel they have to make it so.

well you didn't have to post the thread, I've never had you down as stupid you knew what kind of responses it would get"

Wow relax

I read it before. I resisted mentioning it. One thread a year is sufficient

Spokespeople for the team say it's a misinterpretation. I'm inclined to believe them.
