Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I've just had a really peculiar phone call.

The caller sounded like he was in a call centre and said he was calling about the error reports on my computer. He asked me to switch the computer on for him to talk me through how to fix the problems.

I asked where he was calling from and he said Windows and that my system has been sending them error reports.

I told him I couldn't get on the computer today but it has left me wary.

It's a clever one as lots of people will have Windows and get those random error reports.

I just wouldn't hand over my online details to a caller.

Ask for their number, saying you will call them straight back.in the mean time Google the number, see if anyone else has had problems with "said" company.

But guess some will fall for it sadly.

And I'm guessing they will can get remote access if given the right details.

But don't call them straight back, wait half an hour or more. They can still be on the line even if it's a dialling tone. You think you are calling the correct number but it's still them.

Definite scam, though I once thanked them for calling, said we did indeed have a problem with our windows, and when could he come round to help.

We talked for quite a while about it, he didn't twig when I mentioned being in a conservation area, so not wanting uPVC, and only hung up after, in reply to his question "Are you in front of it now, what can you see?" I answered "Nothing, should I open the curtains?"

100% scam, they will attempt to gain remote access to your pc saying they can fix the errors and once they have a connection will install hidden software to be able to access all your files.

DO NOT GIVE THEM ACCESS !

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Yup, scam.

I love these ones. I bombard them with all sorts of genuine technical questions about the "error reports" and the computer they mean (as I have more than one). They usually hang up on me after a few minutes when they realise neither their script nor their knowledge is up to the task.

Usually they are trying to get you to install malicious software on your PC, in the guise of being security software and generally they try to charge you for the privilege of being scammed too.

Unfortunately a lot of people, particularly older people, fall for it.

Usually a company called PCOnline or similar - not connected with genuine companies of that name - its a definite scam.

I used to get 3-4 calls a week. In the end, I started to just hold them on the hone for as long as I could. The most effective way I found to piss them off was listen to what they are saying, putting on a voice as if they were about to save my life, but sounding confused with some things they were asking me, then after a while say "does the little sticker that looks like an apple mean anything" - the phone lines then goes dead, and the muscles in my cheeks respond accordingly.

Start reading the newspaper to them they'll soon hang up.

Never, ever, never give out any information about yourself, your bank, your internet connection or anything else to ANY incoming call or ANY emails. Especially if they are unsolicited.

My mum got caught by this and it caused her huge distress, she was frightened thst "they" knew where she lived and would come and beat her and my dad up. These people are the lowest of the low and I personally wouldn't pee on them if they were on fire. Scaring elderly people and taking their money

Sometimes banks etc do call. When they ask the security questions, say one thing wrong- such as your birth month is January when it's really May. If they are real they will know you said something wrong and you can ask them what the correct details should be.

This is quite a high profile scam. There's even an article about it on the BBC news website.

The scammers are counting on victims not being particulatly computer savvy.

They do come rather unstuck though when they call someone who knows the subject well

A family member had a phone call like that the other day whilst I was there. He listened and asked how much to fix this problem. I could hear lots of yess's and no's. After holding him on line for a good while eventually replied I don't even own a computer it's a scam now bugger off. Lol.

Like lots of others have said definitely a scam.

It's a scan and they'll charge you a small fortune for "fixing" your computer. My dad got caught with that one. And someone else I know got caught out by the same thing but they hung up after they'd given them access. The program they had downloaded gathered all purchasing info from internet history and was set to send this info next time it connected to the internet!!

Any cold call's just put phone down. Or if your confident and have the time ,wind them up. Or if your able to at work transfer the call to someone else. Just as amusing
